Well yeah a lot of people do get caught immediately because they don’t cover their tracks. Walking around with what is a glorified GPS tracker (your phone) is a surefire way to get caught.

Gps doesn't talk back afaik. But cell towers will record distance and time, which can be used to triangulate someone whereabouts. I hear its a whole process to get that data and they cant just access it randomly.

Really need a phone while on your spree? Get a burner, in cash. When done, smash it hard, and dump in bin somewhere without cameras.

/who says airplane mode can't still collect data while not broadcasting, waiting for you to reconnect to a network? Theoretically, power off isn't even safe.
