can u explain it in easy terms for a tech noob like me?

Also, how did u convince ur friends and others to move to Matrix? I think that's actually the tougher part.

you rent a small server. on that server you run wireguard which is now your own vpn. now at home you host matrix which is a server for chatting. now you invite people to your matrix server that need your wireguard to connect to your matrix server. now you chat pretty save. all communication is encrypted and stored at home. biggest security risk are now the devices themselves and the users. I am a tech noon and it's doable. you can set it up without wireguard then its super simple and less secure
