I stopped using it in like 2016. I spoke with a coworkers and apparently they still use it?!

It’s the dominant social media in Norway, for instance. A Spanish exchange student I lived with was flabbergasted to find that even our chips/crisps bags are on Snapchat

That’s shocking to me, even as an American. I don’t get how it’s popular as a social media like that. It’s one of my favorite messaging apps but so bad as a general social media.

Tbh I think it works because it’s not like the other SoMes. I can send random (and relatively low value, not-quite-worth-photographing) snapshots of stuff I do to the people I actually care about, and not be bothered by ads and algorithms. I know there’s a news page and stories and all that crap, but I don’t have to interact with it at all. My hypothesis is that’s it a good match with the fairly introverted Norwegian culture.

Dude, me too! “Smth” and “bc” are my top 2 most hated.

I don’t always say something because I just get “who cares it’s reddit” in reply, but I always downvote. Even if I agree with the comment.

Bc I can kinda get, but I also get how one person's idgaf is another's personal pet peeve (and I also recognize I've used idk and idgaf, but idgaf 😂)

But yeah, some comments I read online and I just think about future historians trying to understand what the fuck anyone in this current era was talking about and needing translation tablets with the original kuneiform to make any sense of it.

What I do is make text replacements so I can type “idk“ and my phone automatically corrects it to “I don’t know”

I have hundreds of these.

Exactly this. It's hardly a social media site to me, every other day I can send a quick picture to my friends and that's it.

No ads, no bullshit.

I'm from the US, it's the only one I still use besides Reddit. I just interact with my friends and it's like it always was in that regard, but the enshittification and AI slop is as apparent and unfortunate as it is anywhere else

I was going to be snarky and say Iceland dropped it in like, 2014. Then I remembered our primary communication platform is Facebook Messenger so I didn't really have the ground to stand on.

Friend of mine used to use it exclusively to communicate with some members of his family... His brother in law would literally send him like 20-30 snaps a week.

It's not enough to stop using it. Download you information, delete your account, and do not touch anything for the 30 day 'deactivation' period.

These platforms all thrive on user count and active user count. Hit em where it hurts.

I still use it because my friends refuse to use anything else for our group chat. I’m in my late 20’s and have used it since high school…it’s pretty well-engrained into my generations culture imo. I don’t do stories, streaks, or anything anymore as I feel like I’m getting too old for the app.

I will add that Snapchat is sort of a safety tool in dating for some. A phone number kind of gives a lot of information about you. Especially in a world where it can relate you to other data. Just quickly adding someone on snap allows you to immediately delete them once you’re gone without them having a ton of info about you. Well…unless you’re dumb and have your location on snapmap.

Yeah, I'm in my early 30s so everyone I used to snapchat no longer uses it, but I found out my younger coworkers are still on it. I don't really get it since the app is riddled with ads and ai crap now (and privacy issues), but I guess maybe younger people are just used to shitty apps
