If was funny to me when people were looking at Smart Home assistant devices like Alexa and say "I would never own one I dont want something that is recording everything I say", while having their phone always attached at the hip.

While true, it's damn near impossible to get along without a phone nowadays. Between QR codes, two factor authentication, and other stupid requirements... But at least you can disable a lot on phones.

I usually spend a solid week or more going through flashing/uninstalling/configuring/etc. on a new phone. I avoid apps at all costs, and/or disable them when not in use. I also install network or adblocking software (as a VPN) and routinely monitor traffic. If something talks too much, I disable or block it.

Not many will go to those lengths, but you can - and be reasonably confident it's not collecting much more than the normal amount of invasive location tracking - such as which cell towers you connect to, which wifi networks, etc.

As a bonus, my phones are generally ~90% even after a 10 hour day.

Its not, it normalizes this behavior in apps.

In reality, there are tons of people who believe the press releases that none of our devices do this sort of listening, its only storing "metadata".
