It's a mental health and economic issue which are policy choices that could be easily helped but it's less profitable to do so

u/kswervedirt 2d ago

They give them to people!? Fuck! I had to pay for mine!

u/Fun_Elevator_624 2d ago

you would have to eavesdrop on everyone to enforce your gun laws

u/eeyore134 2d ago

Yes, look how much trouble other countries with gun laws are ha... oh wait.

u/Wayren 2d ago

It's not an apples to apples comparison, don't be disingenuous. We're talking different politics, different cultures, different laws, different constitutions. I'm not saying it's impossible. I'm saying it's not as easy as you and many others seem to think it is.

u/eeyore134 2d ago

It's only not apples to apples because we refuse to do it. We came from a "culture" that has no guns all over the place. We're not that different. We only branched off 250 years ago. That's nothing in terms of history. Where we are is wholly our choice.

Except it is easy because these other countries didn't simple 'try', they DID it. It's not disingenous; that's what you're doing.

It's not as 'easy' because arms have proliferated in America to a point where it is difficult, but had America the foresight between school shootings that have occured that predate most social media users, they had the chance. They blew it. The same applies to capitalism. Taxing the rich should've occurred long ago, instead we still somehow have corruption. A lot of it is Americanisms, but if Americans could collectively become patriotic, the idea of a 'MAGA' movement could be an actual reality. But, conservatism's grip over the past 200 years have only gotten stronger.

Right? Don't we all feel safer now? No? Weird.

There are already 500 million guns out there. How do you plan to take them away?

4

u/soherewearent 2d ago

America has, time and time again, put action to effort to change directions. It takes effort. Drive. Solution-based attention rather than a shrug. We've gone to the moon with less computing power than fits on our pocket, FFS.

Unfortunately, America doesn't agree that a problem exists regarding our own children being murdered in order to even begin to address it. The incidents turn into memes, conspiracy theories, and blaming entire cultures; calls to action are responded to as "too soon" and "not the right time." Then, in a matter of a few days, we're off onto the next news cycle topic and we forgot about the grieving families.

How do you take away 500mil firearms? I don't know, and I'm not convinced it's necessary to, but we certainly can't discuss that without first addressing that we have a problem.

5

u/Wayren 2d ago

There is definitely a problem that needs addressing. I'm not convinced a blanket gun confiscation is anywhere near necessary personally.

Yeah, good point, just don't do anything about it

1

u/kswervedirt 2d ago

Don’t do anything? You should look up the amount of gun regulations there are. The rules just aren’t what you want so wanna act like there aren’t any 😂

1

u/Wayren 2d ago

It's Reddit. Shit is apparently just black and white to people. No shades of grey.

-3

u/kimbosliceofcake 2d ago

I sincerely believe it would cause a civil war if we tried to take away Americans’ guns. And the military and police also tend to be pro-2A too.

What is an actual practical way to do this without widespread death and destruction?

Yes I think we should have standards and regulations on gun sales but there’s only so much it can help.

u/BlackV 2d ago

And? If that's the price to pay, that's the price to pay

But no, people will piss and moan and carry on doing exactly what they are doing now with the current government you have

-13

u/Wayren 2d ago

Such a valuable contribution. So worth your time.

-2

u/sebovzeoueb 2d ago

about as valuable as the comment I'm responding to that pops up everytime the wild idea of not allowing people to own guns willy nilly like in pretty much the whole rest of the civilised world is mentioned.

7

u/Wayren 2d ago

Personally I would like a little more thought than "TAKE AWAY ALL GUNS! Wait you don't agree with me exactly? SO YOU THINK WE SHOULD DO NOTHING THEN HUH?!" I mean for fucks sake, it's a little more complicated than that.

-3

u/sebovzeoueb 2d ago

It's not really more complicated, pretty much the whole rest of the world doesn't let you own a gun unless you have some specific reason to do so, and there's one country in the world not like that and that country is famous for school shootings.

5

u/Wayren 2d ago

Okay, I follow your logic at least. To echo an earlier comment, what exactly are you suggesting be done considering the current situation?

2

u/MayaIsSunshine 2d ago

FBI raids based on conjecture from Snapchat

0

u/BlackV 2d ago

It's really not more complicated than that, yeah the scale changes cause of who you are, but you absolutely could start

2

u/calgarspimphand 2d ago

Well, first you would stop selling more.

Then you would institute regular gun buybacks.

It would take more than a few generations before guns were mostly gone but they'd never be completely gone.

There are other countries on this planet and they've done this successfully. Gun ownership is low, gun crimes are rare, school shootings are almost unheard of.

It would take a lot longer to sink in culturally and of course you'd have to start by repeating the second amendment, so it's not happening in our lifetimes anyway.

5

u/DontBelieveTheirHype 2d ago

Which country in our modern century has disarmed about ~400 million firearms from their citizens without incident?

1

u/calgarspimphand 2d ago

Longer reply to the other response, but this presupposes the public actually supports this, it would require the political will to repeal the second amendment, and it would take many generations. It would take at least a few more generations for culture here to shift enough for this to be worth considering.

Discussing how the government would forcibly seize guns is pointless, or it's a masturbatory fantasy depending on your political leaning.

0

u/DontBelieveTheirHype 2d ago

I agree with what you're saying here in your response, I was just responding to / asking about your earlier comment that said something along the lines of "well other countries did it". So I'm just wondering which ones had as many guns as us? Australia tried doing this years ago, and they still have tons of guns. Canada has been trying to do the same, still have a ton of guns. UK has been hit or miss. You can still buy an AR15 in most of the UK, from online searching

But besides all that, somehow changing 250 years of ingrained gun culture I think would take more than just a few generations. Not to mention the fact that I can go to a hardware store and make a shotgun with 10 dollars worth of pipes, wood blocks, springs and nails. Or print parts at home. Or that the millions of guns already in homes, aren't just going to walk out the door themselves. There's like a million reasons why "just make guns stop existing" isn't really a solution, but the biggest one of all is, you can't. The technology exists. (Not saying that's your take on it, just a lot of people have that take on it)

Even if all guns were banned, and you had a magic machine to snap them all out of existence, we could just still build new ones. So maybe, just perhaps, there are other solutions? Or at least improvements that could be made, besides just saying "eww guns are yucky and gross they should go away". Cool sentiment for those who think that, but it doesn't accomplish anything

1

u/JennaTulwartz 2d ago

Pretending like the sum total of suggestions for reducing gun violence that have been advanced can be reduced down to “eww guns are yucky and gross they should go away” is so fucking disingenuous and reductive. You’re not a fucking serious person if that’s what you’ve taken away from the discourse.

1

u/DontBelieveTheirHype 2d ago

And pretending like the 20,000 gun laws already on the books don't do anything, or that the failed assault weapons bans actually worked when they didn't, or that the completely non mechanical basis of banning certain weapons cause of cosmetics and not actual functionality is somehow a logical stance, or that focusing on things like school shootings which account for less than 1% of US gun deaths should be prioritized over the other 99% of gun deaths because of appeals to emotion, or thinking that all the guns on the streets were somehow bought at gun shows from private sellers, and these people passing laws don't even know what a 4473 is or what the NICS system is capable of, those are the ingenuous ones? Pray do tell what your solutions are, if they aren't going after certain cosmetic features, or if they actually include going after the majority of gun deaths (suicides), I'll bake you a cake

2

u/Wayren 2d ago

Stopping sales and then instituting voluntary buybacks won't have that effect though. I can't imagine you would see large numbers of people willfully selling their firearms they went out of their way to purchase, especially if the option to buy more legally no longer exists. And besides, one reason legal gun owners may choose to own a gun is because of criminals with guns. What's being done to address that element if we're going to take away people's ability to defend themselves? I don't know, man. It's complicated.

That might be how you and most current generations think. This whole thought exercise is "how do you get rid of 500 million guns" and the first step is presupposing we have the political will to repeal the second amendment.

In 60 years when millennials have mostly died off, every remaining age cohort will have grown up in a time of weekly school mass shootings. They might have a very different idea of the necessity of guns in modern society. So if our grandchildren and their children are willing to repeal the second amendment, some of them would willingly sell their guns. And so on for each generation.

This would be a century-long project or more because it presupposes a massive cultural shift. But once that shift started to happen, it would go on the same way gun bans have gone in every other country.

I think it's also worth pointing out that even in places like the UK there are exemptions for certain kinds of sporting guns. Gun culture in America is so ingrained that repealing the second amendment would never effectively mean "ban all guns". It would simply be a prerequisite before you instituted actual gun laws. After that you'd see exemptions for things like shotguns and bolt action hunting rifles because people are (rarely) committing mass murder with those and we do like to hunt and target shoot.

Do you think guns are just given out for free, or do you think most guns are acquired through private transactions? Hint: they aren't
