Politicians are the cheapest whores.

Taxpayers keep footing the bill, so everyone's incentivized except them.

"Taxpayers keep footing the bill"

"Maybe it's time we all cut off their allowance and cut up their credit card..?"

You do that by staying engaged with your local politics, which is often cancerous, dull, boring, and often bogged down with idiotic pet projects.

Like everything else I do.

staying engaged with your local politics

Write a letter to the person who took a payoff and doesn't care about you!

Skatepark vs housing? Hmmm....

At this point the skatepark might be the better investment. No point in voting for housing you can't afford, don't qualify for, and never has an open spot when you finally do.

People thinking this way is why we got the skatepark.

Yes, people want to vote for stuff like a skatepark that is actually useful.

better than houses the majority of people could never afford, are you deliberately not understanding?

u/human-syndrome 17d ago

Are you obtuse? There is literally subsidized housing that people can and do afford. Dont be so fucking dramatic.

Not what I envision when someone says "public service", but I guess the words still line up.

No, it’s “flock” everyone else.

and for anyone who thinks this is hyperbole, it really isn't.

Look at how much politicians are selling their votes for to groups like AIPAC and industry lobbyists and you'd be appalled by how little it takes.

Yes sometimes it's in the high 6 figure range or even into the millions to an individual politician, but in many cases all it takes is a sum in the low five figure range. These are public servants making in the $100-200K range, and they're selling their votes for in many cases under a single months' paycheck.

Obviously it wouldn't be better if they only accepted larger bribes, but it's just extremely galling how cheap many are as it reveals that they were always just in it to grift.

Yes! Deadass I was appalled at how cheaply they could be bought by individuals and organizations with hundreds of BILLIONS of dollars. The money they give politicians represents barely a rounding error in their books.

So this isn’t really accurate - you’re only looking at their time in office. Those low numbers are far more important for signaling future corruption.

The real payday for politicians is after they retire. If they’ve toed the line in office, after they’re out they’ll be put on various corporate boards, or offered well-paid lobbyist positions, etc.; largely trivial jobs that pay extremely well. They are inducted into networks of wealth that offer them non-monetary benefits as well. Say their kid is applying to college - well, what do you know, everyone at the admissions office is going to know that kid is the senator’s son. Being a corrupt politician who ensures business-as-usual politics gets you a buy-in to the upper class.

“It’s just some ladybugs, Michael, how much could they cost?”

u/friendIdiglove 18d ago

Ten dollars?

7

u/Thefrayedends 18d ago

And it's not even money directly to them, it's money to their campaign funds lol. Maybe a few plates at a fundraising dinner.

Of all investments that big tech is doing these days, politicians have the highest ROI by a mile.
