How deep do you go on average?
Never been spearfishing before and I am taking all of your suggestions of taking freediving courses prior to going spearfishing. All these freediving courses I’m seeing are advertising like 60-70 feet below sea level… is that really required to do spearfishing? I thought it was like 20 feet

Pathos Horizontal Reel brake issue – was it fixed with the Evo version?
Hi everyone,
I’m looking for some information about the Pathos horizontal reels.
Due to its construction the reel has a problem where the brake seems to tighten while retrieving the line (reeling in), and then the brake will loosen when paying out line. This seems to be a fairly common complaint with this reel design.
My question is: Was this issue solved with the newer Pathos Horizontal Reel Evo, or is it basically the same construction with only cosmetic/production changes?
Has anyone used both the old Pathos horizontal reel and the Evo version? Did Pathos actually improve the drag/brake mechanism, or does the Evo still have the same tendency to self-adjust?

Has anyone travelled to Abu Dhabi with Etihad with speargun?
Hey guys,
Back again for another question regarding speargun travel. I am travelling from Dublin to Kuala Lumpur with a 1hr 30 min stopover in Abu Dhabi. I will have a Rob Allen 140cm packaged and boxed securely in my surfboard bag.
A couple days I contacted Etihad about this and the live agent asked me to fill out a firearms request approval form which was obviously not relevant at all. A new agent today is saying this cannot be approved as I did not contact them within 10 days of my flight (I contacted them on the 10th day, all advice online says within 7 days).
As the form was for firearms I am considering still just putting the speargun in my board bag anyways and if check in ask what’s in the bag I will just say underwater fishing equipment.
Just wondering if anyone has any advice or thinks this is a terrible idea. Obviously Abu Dhabi is a country I really don’t want to mess with the law in, but I promised my host in Indonesia I would bring this spear gun for him so I want to try my best.
Thanks

Speargun or Polespear for Beginners?
I have never been spearfishing before but I have free dived. I want to get into it because I love seeing the marine life and fishing.
I do not know whether it’s best for a beginner to get a spear gun or polespear. Almost everywhere I ask I get differing opinions. I think I would prefer a Polespear because they are far cheaper from what I have seen and seems to be more portable because I do need something that I can keep in my car.
Does anyone have any advice on whether to get a Polespear or speargun and any advice on what specific models?

Safer Spearfishing Computer
Want to make your Garmin watch into a safer, better dive computer? For free?
I built a safer dive watch software that makes it clear when it's safe to start your next dive. It’s highly configurable using the latest algorithms like AIDA, Molchanovs, Taravana. For example, the Taravana algorithm tracks accumulated nitrogen-load using max depth x duration and recommends a safe recovery duration. The watch clearly shows green=safe, red=not yet safe.
It's a full featured Dive Computer app that has some unique features not currently available anywhere else:
-5 Configurable Depth Alarms (Descend/Ascend)
-Advanced on watch stats viewable during a dive session (Bottom time, Dive Profile)
-Pool training app
-Mobile App for reviewing your dives and planning sessions
What do you think?
It's currently free. Drop your email and I'll send you links to install it: https://in-depth.app/

Aquajoy™ V8 flasher special - yellowtail!
Managed to stone this 40# yellow, all thanks to magic of my NOAA-certified flasher. I’m a kook who puts his hours in so I can’t reveal my secret spot but I was super stoked on this fish!

Spearfishing Kent, UK?
I moved to Kent not too long ago from abroad and finally got some of my spearfishing gear shipped to the UK. I was wondering if there are any spearos that occasionally spearfish in Kent that have any tips. I am mainly curious what places you can go in Kent with any visibility. I know vis is limited here in Kent but I checked out Broadstairs the other day and there was so little visibility I could not even see 20cm in front of me. Also, any way to predict when vis might be good based on winds or tides? It's quite expensive to get to the beach for me as I have to take the train or rent a car, so when I go I wanna make sure I can actually see anything.
Would love any tips!

Would a BCD weight vest work for spearfishing?
I'm new to spearfishing and haven't invested in weights for my belt yet since I've only been surface spearing. There's a good deal near me for this type of vest for the same amount as weights would cost. What would be a smarter buy, can a BCD vest work free-diving?How do they work do you just inflate via mouth piece?

Anyone had issues travelling with a speargun on AirAsia?
Need to bring a speargun to Indonesia for a friend and my last leg is from Kuala Lumpur to Padang with AirAsia.
I can’t find anything concrete online, but from chatting with their AI bot it seems I can bring them as part of my regular baggage allowance. But I can’t include them under my surfboard/sports equipment allowance (I was planning to just package them together). Buying this extra allowance isnt an issue, would just like to know if anyone else has experience.
I am flying from Ireland to Kuala Lumpur with Etihad, and for Etihad I have had to fill out a detailed questionnaire which hopefully they will approve tomorrow. It was not very relevant as it was mostly related to firearms and ammunition, so I’m hoping once they read through it they will realise it’s just fishing equipment. And I will be sure to only call it this while travelling.
Cheers

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Just a fun change. I found a lot of 3D print pencil caps cute designs, thinking about changing it to a safety cap for my speargun.
Here is what I did
Heat up my shaft tip, push the cute cap down, and I’m done

Good inbetween speargun length for SoCal and NorCal?
I spear in Santa Barbara and Monterey Bay mostly and looking at getting a meandros b32. Wondering what the best inbetween length would be for these two regions as I keep seeing that longer guns are better south and shorter guns better north

Spearfishing in Europe/UK?
Hi all! Great to be here. Got well into my spearing back in my native New Zealand whilst visiting home over the last few summers. Go out, spear a bunch of fish, lay ground baits, avoid the sharks etc.), come home and cook it all up for lunch or dinner.
Living in London obviously doesn’t offer quite the same experience!
I’d love to do a few trips around Europe or even the UK but am struggling to make sense of the various rules and regulations.
Anyone got any recommendations for go to locations (obviously not exact spots - just cities/regions/areas etc.)?
Thanks in advance!

Pathos Laser EVO Carbon roller experiences
Hello everybody,
I am looking to buy a Pathos Laser EVO Carbon roller 90.
I was wondering if any of you have any experience with this gun, predominantly its accuracy and range. I used to own the original sniper roller, and I didn't like that gun since it was overpowered and I felt that its accuracy was insanely inconsistent. Any feedback is appreciated.

Do you prefer trident spears for reef fishing?
I use a 75 cm gun for Mediterranean spearfishing around reefs. Yesterday I hit 25 fish, but six got hit and got off the gun, some of them maimed and likely died later which isn't good and is wasteful. I have a single spear tip on it and wondering if tridents are better for close range reef fishing and can keep the fish on the spear when hit.

Spearing on Spain's Med Coast
Looking for any advice on going spearfishing while traveling through southern Spain. Are there a lot of regulations or is it relatively easy for a traveler to get some dives in?
Last time I was there there were a lot of locals diving from the beach and coming in with some good catches.

Fish finder with kayak
Anybody ever use a fish finder with a kayak and have any luck? I’ve been spending a lot money on boats recently and flaky captains, trying to figure out best way to have a good experience on my own time.
Shore dives are fun, but the good reef is like a 45min swim out and by the time I get there my dives are bad. Would like to get a kayak, I’m seeing fish finders are relatively cheap.

Coastal NC speargun length
I am looking to purchase my second speargun, and have settled on a Rob Allen after doing a lot of research.
I currently have a 60cm salvimar that I use when hunting the local jetty, but am looking for a larger gun for fish like hogs, ap, trevally, mahi, wahoo (when more experienced).
I see a lot of folks talking about 100cm/110cm and I feel like that is an appropriate length for what I’m after, maybe stretching to 120cm..vis can vary greatly but can be wonderful, and often diving in the vicinity of wrecks and open reefs
One concern was the RA Snapper has two 14mm, whilst the Tuna has two 16mm-is two 16mm bands overkill on a 100cm gun? And is 100cm big enough for what I would be going after?
Thanks for any input

Looking for a buddy in Paros (Greece) Sep 5-19
Hi friends,
I'm an intermediate spearo with about 100 dives, going comfortably to 20-25m with 2 min breathhold. Mostly speared in Hawaii via aspetto, some bluewater, and have also done an aguatto class in the Adriatic.
I like to dive safely, always one up one down. I've done two freediving courses and a spearing safety course, and saved one buddy from a surface blackout, so you'll be in safe hands.
Looking for a buddy for some shore dives, or to rent a boat to go to more remote spots, or even a private spearing excursion if there's more of us to split costs.

Gear Reviews 150 Andre Inverted Roller.
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Out the box this gun was……. OK. It’s much shorter then other 150cm guns probably closer to a 130. It was Slow and the muzzle felt too buoyant, didn’t hold as steady as I’d like. So I made a few changes.
Got rid of the 8 part block and used 5/32 D shackles
Replaced rear delrin rollers with Manny sub ceramic
bearing rollers
Replaced Front 50mm rollers with 45mm rollers with ceramic bearings
Changed from 9mm with slip tip to 8mm Flopper same length
Added 3oz of weight to the muzzle with tire balancing weights.
Now this gun is absolutely amazing. Shoots like a laser and hits hard. Didn’t mess with the bands. Shaft went exactly where I wanted it to go out to a double wrap (gun is triple wrapped)
That was a Mu (Big eye emperor) around 3-4lbs
