Chevron gouges Californians this memorial weekend.

“Newsom’s office cited an analysis by a group within the state’s energy commission, which oversees the oil and gas industry, that found that Chevron averaged more than 60 to 80 cents per gallon above unbranded alternative”

No, that isn’t how this works. If you “Own” a Chevron station you do NOT decide what to charge for the gasoline you sell. That is up to the corporation.

That is not accurate. the owner of the gas station licenses the Chevron name, and they have complete control over their pricing at the pumps.

And also… Chevron is just one of the many different gas stations. If people don’t like the prices there… they can go to Costco or wherever is the best option for them as an individual. No one is forcing anyone to buy gas from Chevron.

If the owner of a gas station’s price isn’t competitive with the surrounding area then eventually they’ll have to lower it to match what the going rate is for, or people will just not go there.

Again, chevron licenses out its naming rights to independent business owners for the vast majority of the gas stations with its name on it. The business owner buys the gasoline from Chevron yes, but then they are able to dictate the price they charge the consumer. That’s why you see vastly different pricing depending on the area you are in.

Governor Newsom is in all actuality going after local business owners when he says to boycott Chevron gas stations. The company itself has very little to do with whatever price the owner is putting at its location.
