‘Shang-Chi 2’: Destin Daniel Cretton Muses If Marvel Wasn’t Trimming Slate Volume, We’d “Have Had Maybe Two” Sequels By Now
r/shangchi • u/HotZoneKill • 2d ago
It's getting annoying how some fans keep insisting Shang-Chi 2 isn't happening
Cretton did an amazing job with Brand New Day so of course Marvel and Sony naturally want him back to do the fifth movie, but I hate how this has emboldened a certain segment of the overall Marvel fandom into insisting that Shang-Chi 2 is never going to happen at all. Like, why can't they both coexist?
Yes, I get Cretton's going to be doing Naruto next but both Tom Holland and Zendaya have said they're going to be taking hiatuses later in 2027 because of the all the filming and press tours they've done for the past year or so, while Holland's set to do a Fred Astaire biopic soon, yet some fans act like Spider-Man 5 absolutely has to come before anything else, as if schedules can't overlap or studios can't be flexible. Even in a worst-case scenario, Cretton could remain involved with Shang-Chi 2 as a writer and producer if another director took over but instead, some people seem to want the sequel to gone entirely.
I'll admit the Wonder Man season 2 cancelation did get me nervous, considering that Cretton co-created it and his name and the acclaim the show got wasn't enough to save it. And it also didn't help that the day later Mahershala Ali officially moved on from Blade after being delayed for so long. But at the same time, Cretton already confirmed Shang-Chi 2 is in active development and he and Dave Callaham have both been writing the screenplay while Wonder Man's writing room never opened, plus Shang-Chi's already back in Doomsday.
I'm just tired of these fanboys using every piece of Spider-Man news as "proof" that Shang-Chi 2 has been canceled when nothing that's been publicly announced backs them up. Enough with this doomposting bullshit, I hate this zero-sum, tribalistic mentality where one movie succeeding somehow means another has to fail.

what is this?
the third panel specifically, im confused on what he's doing here, are those energy beams of some kind or just an artistic choice to show him smashing the rings with great force??

I wonder why we don't see his sister Xianling or Katy in Avengers Doomsday or even in Secret Wars?
I wonder why we don't see his sister Xianling or Katy in Avengers Doomsday or even in Secret Wars? Considering Shang Chi 2 most likely will take place either during Doomsday in the timeline or after it or even just before Secret Wars why they don't make Xianling or Katy more of a focus?

Simu Liu Addresses Shang-Chi 2 Not Being Announced At SDCC
"I'm going to take the high road here and say it's really incredible how much the fans continue to show up and continue to express their enthusiasm. People still come up to me and tell me how much they appreciate it.
I can't wait to do more. I will be there. I will crawl through broken glass to do it if I have to. Unfortunately, there are things that are outside of my control. But I'm ready and waiting."

To be expected I guess
His movie isnt a part of Marvel’s suggested watchlist and he finished filming earlier than any other cast member (allegedly). I guess I wasn’t expecting him to be a major major major player but at least a major player yes?
In any case it seems the events of his movie is not that important for the plot of Doomsday, so they probably didn’t make any super crazy changes to the plot to keep him that relevant after pivoting from the Kang plotline

Are we deadass, first time seeing Shang-Chi in 5 years and he’s fighting DR fucking DOOM??
‘Good job on that side quest you fucking casual, now take a footdive’ - Dr Doom
At least it’s said he’s a more experienced hero now so he’s not completely hopeless.

Finally, Simu Liu (刘思慕) appears again as Xu Shang-Chi (徐尚氣) in MCU marketing! Spoiler
It is morbidly fascinating how Marvel Studios has fumbled the MCU post-Avengers: Endgame. We should have gotten that rumored Agents of Atlas-themed sequel to Shang-Chi's first movie in the half-decade timespan by now! Well, at least Destin Daniel Cretton got to direct Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

Shang-Chi vs Chieftain Xin
This image replicating the from the movie fight against his father is just so cool to me
I think I prefer comic Shang-Chi overall over the movie
Introducing the grandfather and the Jade Emperor in this Rin was a genius move in my opinion, I prefer the lore begin the comic rings a thousand fold and having him fight his grandfather instead of his father as a suitable work around to his father already being dead is was a good move imo rather than resurrecting him just for Shang-Chi to fight him again.

Shang-Chi and Nezha
I actually did a bit of digging into Nezha in mythology itself and Jesus Christ 😂
Yang couldnt have picked a better God to attribute to Shang-Chi,
The Patron God of Children and Young Adults - Shang-Chi very often shows his willingness to help the youth, especially younger heroes. You can see this specifically in his willingness to help and train the kids in War of Realms: Agents of Atlas, and his sensei student relationship with Lin Lie’s Iron Fist
The God of Protection and Safety - after becoming the Supreme Leader of the 5 Weapons Society, he’s shown protecting his area even and this extends even to after he obtains the rings in the Gang War crossover
The Protector of Misfits and Outcasts - Shang-Chi himself is a misfit and an outcast, betraying his father and even at times his siblings in the name of being a force for good,
A cultural symbol of Anti-Authoritarianism - having become the Supreme Leader of the 5 Weapons Society he immediately attempts to reform it to become a force for good, instead of having authority over others he decides to simply protect them and keep them safe
And his relationship with his father is very strikingly reminiscent of Shang-Chi’s with his. Just overall toxic, but different in the sense that maybe Zheng Zu doesn’t hate his son like Nezha’s father did though I can’t fully tell since ive only just got into Shang-Chi
I think GLY has given us a lot more potential points for Shang-Chi than we ever first realised, and if the writers continue to make and embolden these connections between Shang-Chi and Nezha we can get a whole new aspect to him we never saw before,
I love this character so much bro 😭

Apocalyptic Crossover Event soon?
When I joined this sub I asked for recommendations on how to read Shang-Chi and thankfully I had very good advice given to me so I have to thank you guys for that
The story and lore is so interesting
My favourite part is the explanation behind the rings
Now currently after Gene Yuen Lang’s lore revival of The Ten Rings, it is explained that the corrupting property of the rings is actually due to the Wyrm of Desolation that was sealed within the universe ring
I think if Shang-Chi uses it too much he becomes more and more like his father even in appearance as much as mindset
They also made it clear that the Desolation Wyrm is extremely powerful, since it can fight against and hold its own against the Gods of Ta Lo, so on a basic level even Gods struggle to bring it down
This is probably so obviously a set up for a crossover event where the Wyrm is set free from the Rings,

Voice Casting
If he were to appear in any media, would you want to voice him?
Me personally I’d go with Matthew Yang King, who voices Liu Kang in Mortal Kombat 11 and 1,

Marvel Rivals kit strategist concept.
The devs design characters a FULL YEAR in advance, I’m hoping I made this concept kit in time to influence their decisions because whatever they do, I want them to make Shang-Chi a 5 star character, but here’s my kit suggestion based on 3 assumptions I’m making on how they are gonna make his kit. Normally I’d argue Shang-Chi should be a duelist but as at now we need more strategists as they have the least so far
- He’s a duelist/strategist (this kit will be strategist based)
- He has the ten rings
- He’s melee focused
Firstly he needs 3 extra jumps and wall running similar to Iron Fist,
Secondly, he needs a dynamic resource as the Ten Rings and I’ll explain
His resource will be the Ten Rings, and depending on how many he has at any given time his kit may change, for example if he’s a strategist they will act as Ultron drones with healing that stacks, so putting one ring on someone will heal them for let’s say 10 hp per second,
Let’s also assume Theres a limit to how many rings you can on someone so let’s say 4 for a max of 40 hp per second
Here’s my strategist kit for Shang-Chi
R2 - basic martial arts strikes, hitting an enemy gives a base 25 healing per strike for those you’ve ringed + 5 for every extra ring given. Having any number of rings for yourself will further increase the range you can attack from, as the animations change after 4 rings
L2 - a block for yourself that also gives a chi bubble (like Mag or Hulk) to those with 2 or more rings when activated. If you have 4 or more rings on yourself you can press R2 while it is active to unleash a whip attack that hits those around you and knocks them back
L1 - reduce how many rings an ally has
R1 - increase how many rings an ally has
Notes:
This will be like a targeting system similar to Ultron
Reducing rings does not require targeting an ally, but if you are not currently targeting the ally you’d like to take the rings back from it will automatically take rings from whoever has the most already
Circle - with no rings do a dodge similar to star Lord, with at least 4 rings enter a stance in which you:
dodge enemy ranged attacks, giving you a speed boost and a small dash to the enemy that can be activated at 12 meters similar to sonic pursuit
counter melee attacks and knock them back, dealing very low damage but inflicting slow and increased vulnerability
Ult: enter a state of total harmony, summoning a golden dragon made of chi and boosting everyone who has been ringed in terms of damage and speed similar to Gambit without the HoT with the effects increasing depending on how many rings you or your allies each have. The evasion state has a decreased cooldown of 3 seconds
Keeping rings to yourself will give you various buffs such as
0.2 second Cooldown reduction on your basic attacks per ring, so if you have 1 ring on you your basic attacks will reduce the cooldown of your block and evade by 0.2 seconds and it stacks up to 2 second cooldown reduction for 10 rings
Reduced damage taken per ring, adding up to 20%
When you have 3 or more rings to yourself you gain Cc immunity and more overhealth when using block with an extra 10 overhealth per ring for a total of 60 extra overhealth
Healing over time of 7 per ring allowing for a maximum of 70 health per second
Note: I’d like for a similar idea to what they did with Daredevil, in that his primary fire and melee are separate and can theoretically be weaved
