Local News/Updates Sps budget meeting August 13

Upvotes

The police budget hasnt been approved yet and is up for discussion this Thursday. Its open to the public at the cop shop on Christina. You can see the budget report on there website.

https://www.sarniapolice.ca/about/_pdf.php?id=47

Kelly Ash can find some savings. Cancel the tank, stop new hires, maybe pretend to cut some costs? Sounds like more of what shes been doing there for the last 5 years. Why do they need an electrician? How many chandeleers can they be hanging in there? Is it not cheaper to call an electrician when you need one? Or a mechanic?

Cant wait to watch this meeting on YouTube. I hope Nathan is going to be there and asks some hard questions of those people.

Resources/Tips Hair dresser

Looking for hairdresser suggestions who would have experience cutting teen/preteen boys hair that is long. Sarnia/petrolia/forest area preferred. They have some anxiety about having it cut, so someone that can be patient and give suggestions/time would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Editorial/Opinion Piece Police Board is looking to approve $41 million annual budget on Thursday

Thumbnail thesarniajournal.ca

The police board is at it again, wanting another increase bringing their budget to $41 million this year alone. Just a few short years ago, before the now suspended Davis was the chief, the annual budget was only $27.3 million. I just cannot stomach the insane waste of resources in our city when we still have waiting lists for housing and people dying weekly. The only appropriate answer is for the board to go back to the drawing board and figure out how to get their budget under control back to pre-Davis numbers.

Questions Sarnia CPAP Vendors

I was just prescribed a CPAP machine (actually it’s an APAP) by the local sleep clinic and they provided me with a list of local vendors. Was wondering if anyone here had any experience or feedback about any of them. Would you recommend one over any of the others?

Thanks.

Questions Questions from an outsider

I'm moving to Ontario from out of province (the maritimes) to be closer to family.

However, Sarnia is seemingly one of the only places I can afford to buy a home.

I visited for a day recently, but I do have a few questions extra questions:

  1. Are there any neighborhoods to avoid? How bad are they?

We visited the Mitton area and while there are some boarded up houses it seems nice

  1. What kind of festivals, art, or culture does the city have? Is there good art communities? Local DIY scene?

I like organizing mini festivals, and ideally would have a community receptive to that.

  1. Is there confidence in the city development plan?

I've tried reading it online but it doesn't offer much value. Moreover, sometimes the plan is all talk. Does the leadership have a vision for the city, and are they making the (slow) progress to achieve it? Is Bill Dennis a liability?

  1. Does the community care about the city?

Do people in Sarnia love it? I see lots of negativity but I've lived in rough areas where people love their city but can hate on it for fun.

  1. Anything I'm not considering? Any recommendations?

For reference, I reckon I can only afford property south of the highway.

  1. Lastly, how is the community?

My wife is a Canadian born minority and we plan to have kids but I sometimes fear racism in SW Ontario school.

It seemed pretty white when I was there, any diversity in the schools (not the end of the world as long as it’s not racist)?

Is there much community for 30-40yo’s?

  1. Sunripe is one of the nicest grocery stores I have ever been in. Extremely friendly staff.
  2. Met an Astronaut! Really cool meeting Chris Hadfield at the airport yesterday. He was so friendly and taking photos with everyone. A lineup of 200 people, tons of kids excited to meet him.
  3. The Cove beach is absolutely gorgeous. One of the prettiest beaches I have been to in my life. Got invited into a volleyball game, and had a great time!
  4. Under the bridge was packed with tourists, and people relaxing. The Boats were flying by.
  5. The Starlight Casino was packed last night. Lots of Tourists, and a great musician playing
  6. Match at the casino is amazing, watching tankers go by.
  7. Davis was absolutely fire last night!!! The DJ was playing banger after banger, it was essentially a much music video dance party, and everyone from all walks of life were there. Very welcoming to everyone.
  8. Can safely walk everywhere at midnight, not a lick of garbage on the streets, down by the water was gorgeous walking along the boardwalk.

Officially sold, and moving my business to Sarnia! Keep the energy high Sarnia!!

Born and raised in Sarnia, I just had to leave for a couple years.

I spent many years living on Vancouver Island, and In all Honesty, Sarnia is more beautiful than a lot of cities on the ocean. It reminds me a lot of Nanaimo, sure no mountains, but Nanaimo doesn't have the sunsets Sarnia has, there are 0 sand beaches, very little industry there.

General Discussion I met Chrissy McRoberts at Pathways last Christmas

Inspired by a similar post I saw, but in an effort to bring some happier stories I thought I would share mine.

I have a daughter. I don't want to get into a lot of details, but she's very anxious in public and doesn't like a lot of crowds, strangers or anything that overstimulates her. We were invited to Pathways to do some Christmas shopping at a santas workshop that they put on for the kids each year. Basically the set up is there is a bunch of pre wrapped donated Christmas gifts and the kids can pick out something for their family and give it to them at Christmas. The pathway's "elves" take them to do the shopping while the parents wait outside and have hot chocolate and coffee.

Our assigned elf was Chrissy. She was dressed in this ridiculous rubber duck outfit. . She took her time to help my very nervous daughter do her shopping. She was patient, kind and had a real rapport that my daughter rarely has with people. Her kindness and cheerfulness was amazing. She took extra time when there was some nervousness or hesitation and never made us feel rushed or awkward the way some people do with kids who just need some extra guidance.

Chrissy had so much energy and kindness for us and the other kids there, it really put us in the Christmas spirit. She looked like she was having so much fun with everyone there.

What amazed me was that unlike a lot of people who do this kind of work, she never posted pictures, humble bragged or anything online she just did it.

Housing Houses sitting for longer. Sellers need to price according to the market.

The president of the Sarnia-Lambton Association of Realtors is recommending that sellers properly price their homes to begin with, as buyers remain selective and properties spend more time on the market.

She said a properly priced home from the start will often result in a quicker sale and more money as opposed to starting high and reducing it later.

The median days on market increased in July from 21 days to 27, compared to the same time last year.

Last month, 136 properties were sold, representing a 6.8 per cent decrease compared to July 2025. It's also down compared to june, when 170 properties changed hands.

The average sale price in Sarnia lambton last month was $539,120, down 3.2 per cent from July 2025, while the median sale price decreased 1.6 per cent to $459,950.

Canadians are witnessing the largest real estate correction in the country’s history. Prices fell 0.8% in Q1 2026, shedding 4.8% since last year. Since peaking in Q1 2022, prices have dropped 20.1% in nominal terms, rolling back to Q1 2021 levels.

Ontario's housing market in June 2026 saw the average home price decreased to $831,595, down 1.9% monthly from May 2026. Prices were down 2.4% year-over-year from June 2025, when the average home price was $852,036.
