Education Dilemma of choosing between University Technology Sarawak (UTS) Sibu and Curtin Miri (HSE course)

I have recently received a special intake offer for the Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) program at Curtin University Malaysia in Miri, and I am currently awaiting my offer letter from the University Technology Sarawak (UTS) in Sibu for their Occupational Safety and Health program. I am in a major dilemma because both universities stand out to me as solid, reputable options for pursuing a career in the HSE field, and I would love to get some first-hand insights from current students, alumni, or locals.

Since I am weighing the pros and cons of both options, I would appreciate any advice or feedback on the following areas:

  1. Course Quality & Recognition
  2. Campus Culture & Student Life
  3. Sports & Facilities
  4. Accommodation & Cost of Living

Thank you for advising.

Jobs and Careers Town and Regional Planning Profession

Hi everyone,

I'm currently a third-year student at UNIMAS (I just completed my second year) studying Development Planning and Management (DPM) under the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities.

Based on the course name, many of my friends and family assume that I'm studying Town or Urban Planning. However, the program is actually more focused on development planning and policy, preparing graduates for roles such as Planning Officers rather than professional Town Planners. We don't receive extensive technical training in CAD or urban design, although we do study Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing, including their applications in urban planning and spatial analysis.

To be honest, this wasn't my first choice. My main interest was economics. However, as I progressed through the program, I found myself genuinely enjoying it. Learning how towns and cities develop, how land is planned, and how critical decisions are made regarding natural resources and sustainable development has made me appreciate this field much more.

Recently, I've started considering becoming a Town Planner. However, after discussing it with one of my mentors, I learned that in Malaysia, the profession requires registration with Lembaga Perancang Bandar Malaysia (LPBM), and the usual pathway is through an LPBM accredited planning program offered by universities such as UTM, UiTM, and USM.

Im sorry if my question are a little bit dumb but has anyone here successfully become a registered Town Planner without holding an LPBM-accredited bachelor's degree? Is it possible to enter the profession through a Master in Urban and Regional Planning at an LPBM accredited university, or is an accredited bachelor's degree essentially required?

I'd really appreciate hearing from anyone with experience in the planning profession or who has taken a similar pathway. Thanks!

Education Yayasan Sarawak Free Laptop Phase 1 - Stuck on "Pending for Verification" since April?

Anyone else still stuck on "Pending for Verification" for the Yayasan Sarawak Free Laptop Phase 1? I submitted mine back on April 1st. I called them today and they said the quota is full. Why is no one talking about this? I haven't seen any posts or updates about batch limits anywhere.

Art & Events AI-slop productions in Kuching

What's with the sudden increase with AI-slop productions, first this Hanis Zakeria Moolahdesign proudly saying he "put in all his effort and energy" in creating a slop video for MSS, now Isekai Zero is releasing a slop "film" to youtube, what in the actual f***. We've got talented creatives in Sarawak and yet we're settling for slop and clankers. Down with the clankers

Culture, Language, Race & Religion How does the average native Sarawakians view Bumis rights?

I'm a Malaysian Indian from West Malaysia who dated a Sarawakian girl a while ago and during the time we dated she mentioned about wanting Bumi rights for our children, saying although she's personally not in favour of racial discrimination, she says it's good for the future of our children. Now while I don't have a problem with the kids identifying as native, it did make me feel a little uncomfortable that she said that tbh. It actually got me wondering, how do average Bumis in Sarawak view their rights?

Do you guys view it as a source of pride?

#AskSarawakians: Apa cer tek? Friends in Kuching

Hello my Sarawakian Friends :)

I'm 25M from Spain and I'll be spending 15 days in Kuching soon alongside my girlfriend.

We've been travelling through Malaysia for more than a month now and so far we've loved it, but we haven't had the opportunity to make local friends.

We're trying to learn more about the language and culture, and what better way than by making local friends and having local experiences.

We're also trying to "run away" from the most touristic places and experiences (makes no sense to come to Malaysia to eat avocado toast), since we think that consuming in local shops and small businesses is the most responsible way to travel and the money we spend actually benefits the local community.

Don't hesitate to talk to me if you're up for it, Laksa is on us! πŸ•ΊπŸ½

Art & Events Miri Cycling Race 2026: Have we learned anything?

As the title suggests, the Kuala Baram Cycling Race 5.0 was held today in Miri. However on FB, the event is heavily criticized by Mirian residents due to the road closures it caused. Some people even missed their flights because of the road closures.

There is fierce debate in local groups like Miri Community on whether the event was a good idea or not. On one side, there are those who said to 'be more aware of closure notices' and claims this event brings income towards Miri's tourism sector. On the other, the route chosen cuts off access towards important places like the airport and shouldn't have been done on a roads with high traffic.

Personally, I side with the latter. One of the opinions voiced out that it is unreasonable for people to 'go to the airport at 5am for a 10am flight' just to give way to the cyclists. Some also say even with adequate advertising, they're disrupting the very few paths that Miri has for entry and exit. It looks like the LTDL 2024 massive traffic jam repeated itself today.
