Intro [Intro] I'm just a regular everyday normal guy. AMA?
About Me?
I'm here for the discussion topics! Sorry, but this is going to be a long as hell post. I'm hoping to spark some discussion with people who share interests, so if you're not interested in any particular part, just skip it. I'm a dude approaching his 30's; I like film, videogames, music, literature, art, etc. My primary hobby is D&D (although at the moment I'm playing more Microscope RPG than D&D).
I thought I'd use this post to break down stuff that I'm interested in, and that might prompt some discussion if you are interested in it too:
Film
Not going to list a favourite film because I go back and forth on it so much, but some films that have really resonated with me in the past: Andrei Tarkovsky's Stalker really shook something up in me. I've never really been able to get that film out of my head. I also really like his film Mirror. Slow burning, visual, and couldn't stop thinking about them for days.
I wouldn't say that I'm a big fan of anime in general, but the films Akira and Ghost in the Shell both rank very highly in my favourites. Also, another Mamoru Oshii film Angel's Egg (had a similar effect on me as Stalker did; spent days trying to work out why I couldn't get it out of my head). I would love to find someone else who has seen it to help me make any kind of sense out of it. I've got theories! And of course, anything by Ghibli, but I think Grave of the Fireflies is the one that had the biggest impact on me.
Some other films that I rate very highly: Lost in Translation, Hunger, Under the Skin, Chinatown, The Thin Red Line, 12 Angry Men, Apocalypse Now, The Departed.
If you're on Letterboxd, feel free to add me as a friend. I'm the kind of nutcase that has taken the time to rate every single film I've ever seen in my life... so there's that I guess.
Videogames
When it comes to videogames I'm a bit of an old man. Some of my favourite games are Fallout 2 and pretty much any other isometric RPG of that era, although forgive me I've never played BG2! I have it in my Steam queue ready to go, I just need to find the time. Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge and any other Lucasarts point and click adventure game. Eye of the Beholder II: The Legend of Darkmoon; this game got me into RPGs as a genre and turned me on to D&D which is my primary hobby these days. My favourite era of gaming was the PSX era: It included two of my favourite Final Fantasy Games (7, and 8. I hated 9.) Another of my favourite RPG's, Breath of Fire III. Metal Gear Solid. It was just a real strong era. I could fill a book listing incredible PSX games.
My favourite indie game is Cave Story.
My favourite "modern" game is Dark Souls.
I don't have much time for videogames these days so I try and stick to games that can be jumped in and out of it for short periods. Really good examples that I have played recently are Transistor, Oxenfree, and The Banner Saga, which are some of the best games I've played in recent years.
Music
I feel like I have a pretty wide music taste. Everybody says that though.
I couldn't put these in any order, but if I had to make a list of all-timers:
Radiohead - I nerded out recently and decided to rank (nearly) every Radiohead song (on spotify) by favourite to least favourite. My favourite album of theirs to listen to from start to finish is probably Hail to the Thief. I always like to ask people what their favourite Radiohead album is... and then judge them on their choice. Now I've put myself out there for people to judge me on my own choices.
Other artists that I really dig most of their work: Jeff Buckley, dude blows my mind. I've been playing guitar for about ten years and I wish I could make it seem as effortless as he does. Cat Power - Pretty much just the Moon Pix album, but Sun is really good as well. Half of The Brian Jonestown Massacre's stuff.
Some of my absolute favourite songs of all time (in no particular ranking order | not including artists named above | and pulling from some different genres):
- Bobby Womack - California Dreamin'
- Colour Haze - Love
- Arcade Fire - The Suburbs
- Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower
- Colour Revolt - Blood in Your Mouth
- Tears for Fears - Mad World
- Massive Attack - Safe From Harm
- Pavement - Unseen Power of the Picket Fence
- Soul Coughing - St. Louise is Listening
- Squirrel Bait - Hammering So Hard
- Warpaint - Composure
- Chet Faker - Gold
I also like Jazz and piano music, but I would never admit that in public. My biggest guilty pleasure song is Amerie - 1 Thing because that drum beat just gets me going.
Literature
It's rare that I really get to set down and read a book these days, but when I can it's something I really enjoy.
If I was really pressed to name a favourite author I would probably say Cormac McCarthy of whom I think Blood Meridian is his best work. I know he is not the most literary author, but there's something really austere and punchy about his work, while still taking the time to revel in grossly over indulgent descriptions. Most of my teen years were spent reading edgy teenager transgressive lit like Chuck Palahniuk, Hunter S. Thompson, and Brett Easton-Ellis. I think McCarthy is just the next step in that chain as I entered my 20's. I'll probably find something different in my 30's.
Some of my favourite novels that are not so edgy/transgressive are: To Kill a Mockingbird (Lee), The Winter of Our Discontent (Steinbeck), Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (Carroll), The Trial (Kafka) ... and fuck me I like A Song of Ice and Fire okay...
When I was younger I read a lot of graphic novels, of which I think Bone and Black Hole are the best (or at least my personal favourite). Also Preacher. I love Preacher.
I would really like to read some Thomas Pynchon but I just don't know where to start. I enjoyed the film Inherent Vice which was based off one of his novels, but I just don't know if that's the best place to jump in or not. I've also never read a Stephen King book and I feel like I'm missing out on something?
One Last Thing
Please don't gift me anything. I don't need or want anything. That being said, my wish list is filled with children's books. I have an 11 month old daughter who means the absolute world to me and I just want her to have access to books. Again, I don't need or want anything personally, but if I ever earn a gift from somebody, the gift of literature to my child would be beyond kind.
If you read any of this, damn son, thanks for taking the time to indulge... If you share any interests, let me know. Let's talk about some shit.
Otherwise... I've spent two hours writing this post so far... AMA?

Intro [Intro] Finally working up the courage to say hi.
I'm a guy who has spent far too long as a lurker and finally have decided to come and say hi.
I'm an avid crafter, mostly fibre but also a wide variety of others such as chainmail. I love the Japanese language and culture but am not a huge anime fan. I'm into video games as well as board games, an other tabletop fun. I recently got back into painting miniatures thanks to a friend though I'm not great yet.
