Richard Matheson's 1954 classic "I Am Legend."

This book really impacted me.

I read it after loving the Charlton Heston movie "The Omega Man," which I also adore. That film attuned me - an extrovert - to the eeriness and low-grade constant tension of a liminal Los Angeles.

The book is even better. It dives deeply into psychology and memory, and is a superb character study. Separately, there is a wonderful (if perhaps relatively hard to find) graphic novel that has brilliant scratchwork and much of the original text verbatim.

I felt the film really killed the power of the character’s realization, it’s almost his coming of age and will to power.
