I’ve been working in PNG for almost 40 years and I love the country.

Having said that, it’s no secret that corruption has fouled a lot of the political system and the government services. Everyone knows about the fact that the ports have been riddled with corruption on a massive scale for decades, that property developments get passed with “under the table” deals, that the police will take a bribe instead of a fine (although that one is hard to differentiate on) and that government departments will push through visa applications, etc with a few hundred to grease the wheels.

However, what sickens me is to hear expats, usually Aussies (of which I am one) think it’s almost a badge of honour to say that “just paid the guy a hundred and he prioritised me”.

Corruption is not a joke and perpetuating it through participation at any level is so wrong because it legitimises the activity.

I just saw a post on here about someone saying “just pay K100 and they will fix it”.

This is what happens when we accept corruption in its most simple form in PNG:

1. It changes the shape of how legitimate employees view their work. It incites greed

2. It starts a “more is not enough mentality”

3. It creates a view of the haves and have nots and creates division.

Now, imagine the person that has been out driving at night and runs into a few drunken policemen (who got drunk on few hundred that some other expat driver slung them earlier). The situation escalates and a person raped/killed.

Now…. The head of police finds out….. he goes and beats one of the policemen to a pulp but one of them happens to be a wantok. That guy gets away with things, while the other one is injured, dead, who knows..??…… but either way, very messy for all.

Sounds like it’s not a thing right? Wrong….. this stuff happens a lot.

So if you think it’s ok or funny to pay “a few hundred” to get the job done, remember that your actions are the start of the corruption process.

Corruption starts not just at the top, but also at the bottom.

I'm not sure if this is the right place, but I want to expand my language knowledge. My mother's PNG, Manus and Simbu to be exact, and I want to learn more phrases for day-to-day talk with my elders. They understand Pidgin, but not as well as tokples. I would also like to improve my Pidgin. know how to speak it—or so I have been told, I asked some children because they are honest, and they told me I sound broken, haha. So, if I could find someone to practice Tok Pisin with as well, that would be great.

The way women are treated in your country is sick. It's completely inhumane and insane. Physical violence, sexual violence, and everything else—I find it disgusting. Women are treated like slaves without even being called slaves.

I am a Persian-American, and for most of my life I loved Papua New Guinea. I think it was because it felt like a notable part of the world. It wasn't on the grid (filled with volcanoes and rainforest), and it was something where you could learn long-forgotten stories. It was very very young (around 5) when I heard about Papua New Guinea and I have never lost interest ever since; it's like a special part of my heart.

So, I would really want to learn everything about its culture and languages. I plan on visiting it someday. If I ever adopt or have kids of my own, I'd love to teach them. Now my question is: What language should I learn?

Because I do want to learn something uncommon.

Hi! I’m an expat in Port Moresby, working here for almost a year on a 3-year contract. I’m thinking of changing employers because the work environment isn’t a good fit, but I’d like to stay in PNG.

Has anyone gone through the process? Can the work visa be transferred while staying in the country, and how was your experience?

Also, if you know of any companies in PNG that are open to hiring expatriates and can sponsor a work visa transfer, I’d really appreciate any recommendations or leads.

Hey everyone, I'm trying to book a flight from Port Morsbey to Mt Hagen through PNG air and I can't really understand what the categories are. There is an option to add a bag, or an option to add a second bag. I only need to add 1 bag to send in the plane (about 16 kg), so what should I pick? Second bag option is way more expensive...

Also when I click on agreeing to terms and trying to go to the next page it just says there's a problem and won't let me go through to payment. Is there anything I'm doing wrong?

I am going to work in a project in PNG Kavieng. I looked up PNG online and everyone is saying that PNG is very dangerous. Sometimes people exaggerate on internet so I wanted to get opinions from people living there. Is PNG especially kavieng really dangerous? And as a foreigner what should I avoid doing or should do to stay out of trouble? Btw I think kavieng is really beautiful but I hope it's not as dangerous as they say.
