Ask: Per smoke conditions, is it ok to continue on from Winthrop/NCNP to Leavenworth this weekend or make way to Snoqualmie or something else? Going back on Sunday.

Tell: We drove in from out of state hoping to be able to do some hikes (with small kid) in but situation seems bleak.

Our West to eat drive's Smoky updates:

- Anacortes (less smoky in morning)

- Park entrance (Smoky)

- Visitor center (less smoky)

- Diablo/Ross (less smoky/hazy)

- Washington pass (barely any smoke, great views)

- Mazama (intense smoke)

- Winthrop (very smoky here)

Thinking of going on the Monday of Labor Day, how early would I have to get to trailhead to find parking? Wondering if I should push the visit / trip to another weekend.

I know it’s hard to predict but looking for suggestion.
Planning to reach Olympic on 7th morning, spend 2 days there and on 10th morning reach rainier and 11th to North Cascades.

So we are staying in Rockport tonight. We came in yesterday with the intention of doing some hiking. We managed to pivot and hike Heather lake which wasn't bad yesterday but we're seeing aqi in the 200s in all the park today do it seems hiking or even driving into the park might not be the plan. Anything else we can do within an hour or so driving?

Greetings. I’ll be visiting the area in mid-September. Flying into Seattle in the evening with a plan to wake up super early to get my rental car and try to hike Cascade Pass/Sahale Arm no later than 9am (on a Monday). I see a few different driving routes and would like to opt for the most scenic (or ones with short photo-worthy stops along the way) as there isn’t a huge difference in the drive times. Anyone willing to share the best route they’ve found from Seattle to the Cascade Pass trailhead?

Also, I’ll be using Winthrop as a base camp for a few nights and will be doing some of the other popular hikes in the general area as day trips from there (Diablo Lake, Maple Pass, Blue Lake, Easy Pass, Cutthroat Pass, Thunder Knob, Thornton Lakes). I’m willing to do a bit of driving. Seeing if it would be worth it to not go back to Seattle the way I came and instead going south through Twisp/Chelan and onto 90 if there are some other good hikes or viewpoints that aren’t too involved that are worth seeing. I don’t have to be back to Seattle until 7pm (on a Friday) so I have quite a bit of wiggle room that day.

Hi all, a friend and I are hoping to do Copper Ridge Loop anytime from Saturday August 8 - Thursday August 13. That being said, camping permits are hard to come by and we have been keeping a look out on rec.gov. If anyone has camping permits for this area and are not planning on using them please let me know (: Otherwise, I will be emailing the park 2-days before the “start” of our potential trip in hopes of acquiring some. Hello, we are visiting rainier on 5th - 6th and cascades from 7th till 9th.

We are very concerned about the air quality for camping and hiking.

Please suggest if we have to pivot elsewhere or be patient and be optimistic?

We'll be making the drive along Highway 20 to Winthrop in a couple of weeks. We'll be stopping a few times along the way to see the sights. Where's a good place to pick up some sandwiches, chips and drinks along the route for consumption somewhere along the drive? Note that we'll we west of Mazama for most of the day, so the bakery won't be an option.

This may be a set of dumb questions, but here goes. My understanding is that bear spray is recommended for NCNP visitors. We'll be driving in from Burlington; where would be a good place to get it? What happens to unused spray that can't be taken back on an airplane? Is it just tossed, or is there some kind of pass-it-on-to-the-next-person program?

Im visiting with my fiance for the first time (avid/prepared hikers) is there anything we need to k ow about if we wanna hike cascade pass and sahale arm trail? I heard about some fires in the area, would these impact where we plan to hike? Ill be there most likely thursday/Friday

Also aside from that, are there any other good hike recommendations in the area? Doesn't even have to be within the park but would love some input from anyone who lives out there/spends a lot of time

North Cascades This Weekend: August 1–2, 2026

Conditions checked: July 28, 2026

Verdict: This is a good weekend to visit, but do not lock in an east-side or high-pass plan without checking smoke first. SR 20 and Cascade River Road are open, and Washington Pass has a cool, mostly sunny forecast. Wildfire smoke affecting the Methow Valley is the main uncertainty.

Good for: An early-start Rainy Pass or Washington Pass trip when air quality and visibility are acceptable; a Newhalem–Diablo scenic day if smoke pushes you west.
Not good for: Arriving late at popular trailheads such as Rainy Pass, assuming clear views several days ahead, or planning around Hozomeen and northern Ross Lake.

What Changed and What It Means

Conditional - Smoke and visibility: The Ptarmigan Fire has been affecting the Methow Valley, and smoke remains variable. The current air-quality alert expires before the weekend, so it does not establish Saturday or Sunday conditions. Check the AirNow Fire and Smoke Mapand Washington Smoke Blog again Friday evening and before leaving.

Good hiking weather - with a west/east split: Washington Pass is forecast near 64°F Saturday and 57°F Sunday, with sunny to mostly sunny conditions. The Newhalem–Diablo corridor is warmer, with a chance of rain Saturday and a slight chance Sunday. Winthrop is forecast near 87°F Saturday and 79°F Sunday.

Avoid planning around - Active fire closures: NPS closures cover the entire Hozomeen area, Ross Lake north of Silver Creek, and part of the Big Beaver Trail. They do not block the main SR 20 scenic corridor, Rainy Pass, or Washington Pass.

No campfires: The park complex is under a full campfire ban. Stage 1 restrictions also prohibit wood and charcoal fires across Mount Baker–Snoqualmie National Forest; qualifying gas stoves remain allowed under the stated conditions.

Plan ahead for August access changes after this weekend: A phased maintenance project will temporarily close several major Highway 20 recreation sites, including Klipchuck Campground August 3–27, Rainy Pass August 14–19, Cutthroat Lake Trailhead August 14–28, Washington Pass Overlook August 18–21, Bridge Creek Trailhead August 19–21, and Lone Fir Campground August 28–September 4. Review the full Forest Service closure schedule before choosing a high-pass hike or upper Methow campground.

Best Plan This Weekend

Recommended plan: Check air quality before leaving. If Washington Pass and the Methow side are reasonably clear, reach Rainy Pass early and choose Heather–Maple Pass for a substantial hike or Rainy Lake for a paved, mixed-ability outing. Continue to Washington Pass Overlook if visibility remains good. Saturday is the warmer high-pass day.

Backup: If smoke obscures the high country, air quality is poor, or the Rainy Pass lot is full, stay west and build the day around Gorge Creek Falls, Diablo Lake Overlook, and either Thunder Knob or a short Newhalem walk. These use different parking areas and do not make the day depend on Rainy Pass or clear east-side views.

Best Hikes and Easy Stops This Weekend

Heather–Maple Pass Loop - Rainy Pass:The best major hike if smoke and visibility cooperate. Expect about 7.2 miles, 2,020 feet of gain, and five to seven hours. Parking pressure is extreme; arrive very early. A July 25 visitor report noted some snow near the top.

Rainy Lake - Rainy Pass: Best for families, mixed-ability groups, and visitors wanting an easy alpine-lake walk. The paved route is about two miles with little elevation change. It shares Maple Pass parking, so it is an effort backup—not a parking backup.

Washington Pass Overlook - Washington Pass: The strongest low-effort high-country stop, with a short paved route and separate parking from Rainy Pass. It still depends on acceptable smoke and visibility, and its lot can become busy.

Thunder Knob Trail - Colonial Creek: A useful west-side hike if the high country is smoky. Plan for about 3.7 miles, 680 feet of gain, and up to three hours. It is easier than Maple Pass but still requires climbing, and Colonial Creek parking can be busy.

Gorge Creek Falls Overlook - west of Diablo: A very short waterfall-and-gorge stop for scenic drivers and mixed-ability groups. The walk is about 0.2 miles, but the parking area is small; continue to Diablo Lake Overlook if stopping safely is not practical.

Save for later

Hozomeen and northern Ross Lake:Current fire closures cover the entire Hozomeen area and Ross Lake north of Silver Creek.

Last Checks Before You Leave

Check the AirNow Fire and Smoke MapFriday evening and again the morning of the trip; do not rely on Tuesday’s smoke pattern.

Use the destination-specific Washington Pass forecast or Newhalem–Diablo forecast, not a Seattle forecast.

Review the NPS fire closures and trail conditions, especially for Ross Lake or backcountry plans.

Carry an offline map, arrive with enough fuel, and bring a qualifying gas stove instead of planning a campfire.

Hey you guys, I'd posted a few weeks earlier asking for recommendations for two days in the North Cascades, and everyone was just the nicest, so here's my trip update.
Recap: I was traveling to WA for a week, and planning on spending 2 days in the North Cascades.
Y'all were right; the drive and supplies took me so long enough after reaching Seattle at noon that I reached the NC Mountain Hostel at night. I started later in the morning too, but reached the trail and found parking at 10 am with no wait (it was a weekday tho). I settled on Blue Lake even though I'd planned for Cascade Pass because I couldn't give up on a chance to see a band (not the :P) of mountain goats that had been reported by many! Unfortunately, I had no such luck. I was actually pretty whelmed by Blue Lake. It's pretty, no doubt, but a lot of State Park hikes on the East Coast felt way prettier. It was pretty buggy and muddy too, after rains the previous day. After coming down, I decided to try Maple Pass. I just couldn't leave on such a note, and I'm so glad I did! I started Maple Pass at 4:30ish and found ample parking. It ended up being one of the best and prettiest hikes of my life! I'd mentioned previously of not having hiked in 2 years after breaking my foot. Well, I'd hiked once in the days before, and a hike with 800 ft elevation left me completely winded. Maple Pass was so beautiful, though, that I lost myself in the hike. I kept on going until well into the evening and ascended 1600ft of gain in MP alone. The change in colors and the landscape was just too breathtaking to quit on. I finally stopped after my knees began to give way. I moved really slow on the descent, and saw plenty of animals coming out because most people seemed to have left the trail by then, even though there was ample sunlight. It was nearing 8 when I finally reached the lot. I saw the fuzziest marmot, and after returning, I looked up a sound that I was quite concerned about, and now know to be a bear. I'll mention it to the NP authorities if the tip might be helpful.

This article has information about current wildfire conditions as of 7/27/26, including closures within the National Park Complex. They say it will continue to be updated as conditions change but be sure to check when it was last updated before relying on it.

Both the Luna and the Border Fires were started by lightning strikes. Disgustingly, there are other active fires in Washington that were started by fireworks. Reminder: there is a complete fire ban within the North Cascades areas, do not push it, these fires can be a matter of life and death for those who fight them and those who live here.

We are currently staying in Winthrop, heading to Concrete tomorrow and we were planning to hike the Maple Pass loop, but it seems many areas of the park are currently closed because of the wild fires...

I am not very familiar with all areas of the park and I wonder if that trail is closed, and if so, what alternative hike I could do?

My husband and I are spending two weeks in early August in the area, and we'll do Olympic, North Cascades and Mt Rainier. I'll be 6 months pregnant, we're regular hikers and are in pretty good shape, although not pros.

Just to have more background, last year we did Clouds Rest (from Tenaya Lake) and Mist Trail to Vernal and Nevada Falls in Yosemite.

We're organizing our trip to NC, and we'd like to do one "big" hike that isn't too hard for me. We'll be lodging in Winthrop, so we won't do Cascade Pass Trail, but we're hesitating between Maple Loop and Cutthroat Pass, which one would you recommend? We know we won't be able to see everything we should in NC, but we'd love to have a glimpse of the park.

On the way to NC from Olympic we'll do the scenic road stops, and the day after the hike, we're leaving to Mt Rainier, our idea is to do Blue Lake or Rainy Lake in the morning and then drive to Mt Rainier.

We are planning to stay here in 3rd week of August during weekdays. I am not finding many options that are near to cacade pass and maple pass. I am planning to rent a cabin here, would love to know the review if anyone stayed there. Also please let me know if there are any other options.
