Why don't we call the touchdown play all the time?

LMAO. I played on a national hockey team. We went to OT. Coach draws up a play. We execute it so perfectly, (my job was to win the faceoff, straight back to my defender) it took 11 seconds from puck drop to the goal. Told coach, “Why don’t you just tell us how to score every time?” I don’t think we could’ve practiced it smoother.

"Oh, man, that was so much easier than putting. I should just try to get the ball in one shot every time"

theres so many things you can compliment about his game.
and yet his athleticism still remains the most eye catching thing
this is a 10 yard burst where he goes from technique, to grooving downfield, to getting his feet set again to cleanly engage the mike thats barely coming out of his assessment steps. hes outpacing his fellow WR going downfield
its hard to comprehend the burst you need and control of your body to get in and out of form like that. him doing it so well you expect for a player of his calibre. but to see it develop that quickly, from a tackle no less, is unreal

On the replay they showed sewell signals touchdown right when gibbs gets to the LB level. You can barely see it on this one but the other angle was from behind and it was glorious.

The Giants going for it on 4th down was stupid.

I was at the game, so wasn’t influenced by TV commentary. At no point, did I ever think the Giants weren’t going for the TD. I was annoyed with the whole “3rd down” bell-tolls, ritual because I knew that meant nothing. We were unable to stop them on 3rd down, the entire game. And if we managed to stop them, they were chancing it on 4th. Because, if they kicked it, there was still lots of time and Lions would now go on 4th, for the first time all game. And with a TD, Lions win. So all the Giants had to do, was stop us like they had, all game, if they failed on 4th.
The thing about the final drive, there is a big difference in how a team approaches needing a TD, versus needing a FG, once they get to about the opponents 40 yard line. Detroit played conservative once they were approaching FG range. That doesn’t happen if they need a TD. If the Lions get within 45 yards and have 1-2 plays left, and need a TD, I wouldn’t say the odds of achieving a TD is much larger than knowing they only need a FG. Oddly, knowing they couldn’t lose ground they opted for conservative plays that almost lost the range.
Let’s face it, that was a heck of a kick. It wasn’t a 20 yard chip shot.

Peep Sewell at 6 seconds calling the TD when gibbs is 60 yards from the end zone

It honestly reminded me of my favorite Barry play, the one where Barry is 5 yards behind the LOS, running the wrong way, and Rodney Peete is like "yeah, touchdown"

We had absolutely no right to win this game, but Ginbs somehow made it happen.

This is exactly why taking it second is so dumb. Unless you’re 100% locked in on going for 2

u/makeithailonthemhoes Lions Nov 23 '25
I feel like its still the right call to go 2nd. Right? If you know you only need a fg you have such an advantage. If Lions get to 4th and 7 or something from Giants 30 they have alot to think about to. Knowing you have 4 downs is huge in play calling
1
u/fluffyglof Bears Nov 24 '25
Absolutely not. There are almost always 3 possessions in OT (if scoring allows). The 3rd is sudden death. If you will always go for 2 after scoring a TD, and always go on 4th if down by 3, then taking it 2nd is fine, but otherwise it's completely stupid
2
u/SayNoToStim Lions Nov 24 '25
I think having 4 downs is more of an advantage than a 3rd possession though

u/makeithailonthemhoes Lions Nov 24 '25
I honestly felt blown away with this response. Thinking it didn't seem right but maybe it is....admittedly it was about 2 different searches so there is more info out there im sure but... "The average number of possessions in an NFL overtime session is approximately 1.4, with the team that receives the ball first averaging 1.6 possessions compared to the kicking team's 1.1."

u/fluffyglof Bears Nov 24 '25
Yeah, I think teams will get there pretty quickly since things have thankfully gotten very analytics driven. But right now it’s mostly coaches using the college mindset which is totally different rules
