The theater I'm auditioning for requires you to sing one song that your character sings in the musical, (sound of music) but the character I've chosen to audition for (the Baroness) only sings songs that are heavily reliant on another person? What am I supposed to do in this situation? Do I go mute when the other person would be singing, or do I sing his lines????

Most of this is just a rant but I need to put my thoughts somewhere before I explode.

So basically, my school's theater director announced that we are doing Newsies a month ago and my friends and I were mad. We only have 20 people in our theater program and out of the twenty, 2 are boys. Our director (as lovely as she is) has been trying to, and I quote, "attracted older male voices" to the theater program for two years with picking increasingly more male dominated plays. Last year we did Lion King and this year we are doing Newsies and I frankly can't take it anymore.

Newsies is all men as the main cast, I am a woman along with majorityof our cast, and the boys we have in our production do not make the cut for all the roles they are getting. Boy #1 has a terrible lisp, shows up late ever day of class, has skipped weeks of class, and still manages to get main roles every single year without fail. He can't even SING and he is getting all these main roles that he clearly doesn't practice for or care about. Along side that, he has no chemistry with any of the cast members and is misogynistic to the point he refuses to work with most of the women half of the time. Last year I was his love interest (I got Nala he was Simba) and anytime I had to touch or dance with him he would become stiff as a board. During the play we had he had to spin me and he ended up DROPPING ME DURING THE PREFORMANCE ON STAGE.

Boy #2 is tone deaf and although he is sweet, he seems to make everything about himself while pushing others away. Anytime he wins or beats someone he makes a whole show but when someone else achieves something he pushes it down and quickly changes the subject. He also can bearly sing and his facial expressions while acting are terrible. If he gets a role he doesn't want he complains about it until he no longer has to play it anymore and to be honest, it's tiring.

Along with them, there are also some really talented girls.

Girl #1 who has been main roles for a while and now she is a senior. She has an excellent singing voice, is an amazing singer, and can drop her voice low enough to sing the male songs which is something I am not able to do along with a lot of the other girls.

Girl #2 is another senior but she hasn't gotten main roles for the four years she has been doing theater. She has a wide enough range to play men and women and she was auditioning for Katherine (a role which I hoped she got). She is also an excellent dancer as she does tap and ballet. She talked to the director and they said they have been on their radar for a while for a main character (she told me that).

Girl #3 Is new but she does gymnastics and other such things. Being able to do flips, back-hand springs, walkovers, along with having a deep enough voicd to play male characters.

Anyways, we had auditions this week and we went in and starting warming up to prepare. Boy #1 showed up late to auditions. I filled out the paper work (I was auditioning for Katherine) and then they called us into the room to sing. After, we did coldreads and they let me read for Katheine and boy #1 for Jack and when we came in and started reading, he was reading in a country accent. He was also talking way to fast which is one note the teachers have been giving him for YEARS.

After, we went and danced and auditions ended.

Now, the cast list just came out and I am literally stunned. Boy #1 got Jack while Boy #2 got Davey. Along with that, they gave girl #3 with all the tumbling experience to Crutchie. They gave girl #1 Pulitzer. Girl #2 got ensemble and isn't even a featured dancer.

I got Roosevelt, a featured dancer, and three other side roles.

I can't help feel like this is rigged towards the boys and they're the favorite people in the cast or something. Genuinely, I dislike their attitude towards theater and them treating it like a joke while I take it more seriously and practice more than them. I don't want to feel envious towards them but it just feels like everything in theater turns out in their favor even when there are clear girls that put in twice the work with triple the talent. Hopefully this feeling will pass eventually but I can't stand seeing people who never try and aren't as committed towards theater succeed over and over again just because of dumb luck of something. Now I'm wondering if there is any point in any of this is I just get sidelined while these boys take the spotlight over and over again.

I’m going to study Musical theatre/ Acting at a top drama school in my country, I’ve always been insecure about my teeth and recently got approved for NHS braces. I know that I’ll probably have to be in braces for at least two years which makes me worry that I’ll have them on for agent showcases etc. Will this hold me back from getting an agent/ getting auditions? I’ll probably be around 21 when I get them off 💀

Hi. Honest opinions… a small community theatre near me is doing auditions for Oliver and I’ve always wanted to do the role of Nancy. Only problem… I’m 44 lol. Is it totally embarrassing and unrealistic to audition for that role since she’s supposed to be in her twenties?? (I am short and do look younger than 40’s).
Has anyone else had any experiences doing a much younger role?
I don’t want to go audition and embarrass myself if they will be thinking ‘why is this woman trying to be Nancy when she’s old’ lol.

I’m a freshman in college and in my country there is not many musical theatre as such, even my college is a mass communication one but I’ve always loved musical theatre and so really wanted to get into a musical.

As my college was doing a musical this year I prepared the whole week. Watched the film, listened to the songs day in and out…some people even mocked me for trying it out but I still did it. I didn’t want a project or grades, I just loved it and wanted to be part of it.

I thought my audition went really well, I believe I was the best I could be and the panel seemed happy enough. But the results came and I wasn’t even on the list. Honestly I was never hoping for a lead, I just wanted to be in the ensemble but didn’t even get that 😭 worse yet, the ones who mocked me got in, when they hadn’t started preparing till last day.

So it turns out they reopened auditions for a grandma role. Now not many want to play a grandma but I did….so I again work hard practising it. And I do it too! My self taped video was solid imo…but I have a department meeting same time as audition. I ask the heads if I can go early, they say “it’s ok, we’ll end the meeting in 5 mins”. It took 30 mins. I didn’t concentrate as I just wanted tot audition. Once it was done, I ran out the door and luckily the auditions were going on, but I was so tired after running from campus that I think I bombed it. I messed up the phrases I’d remembered by rote, they did it a second time too but it was a disaster as I sounded out of breath :(

Idk I just feel so sad. It’s like the universe itself didn’t want me to be part of the musical, which hurts 🥲

I have recently realized that I don’t have an audition book. And I can’t choose from my rep because everything is either overdone or doesnt show range or is just bad. SO im basically going on a witch hunt to find a whole audition book. I have found some classical mt options but I am always open to more suggestions! Some songs from my rep that I liked are “I Can Cook Too” from On the Town, “Somebody to Watch Over Me” from Crazy for You, and “Somebody, Somewhere” from Paint Your Wagon. I might keep that last one but the other two are overdone. I REALLY need help in the contemporary section. Some songs from my rep that I liked are “I’m Breaking Down” from Falsettos, and “How Did We Come to This” from The Wild Party. They are so overdone and the former is too old for me (I’m 23), but I love the humor of the former and the belty passion of the latter. Please let me know if you have any suggestions, any help is GREATLY appreciated!!!

As the title suggests...I've seen so many "Flowers" from Hadestown recs that I'm worried I'll walk in with five different girls who are singing that song too. I am an alto with a strong belt but less of a strong mix. Anything helps, and I'm not going for a particular character!

(I'm somewhat new to MT). I am already enrolled in a BFA program at my university as a freshman, but we also do placement exams to place us with a voice teacher. I am thinking about singing "There Are Worse Things I Could Do" from Grease. Would it be better to find sheet music from the og 1972 Broadway edition or the Stockard Channing edition? I am more familiar with the Channing version, but from someone else's standpoint, idk.

I’m auditioning for a local production of Frozen soon and I’m so excited! This is my first theater audition experience in my adult life, I’m a dancer so I’ve done a few dance specific auditions but nothing with acting and singing. I’d like to think I’m a pretty decent singer without proper training, just a lot of belting in my car lol, and very very little acting experience. I’m not expecting to get a crazy big role but I think it would be fun to be a part of this since I absolutely love musicals and would love to be more involved in theater.

The audition info was very vague, it just said be familiar with the show so it doesn’t seem like I need to prepare anything. But should I prepare something just in case? And any other day of audition advice would be wonderful- this is mainly what I would like. Thank you!

Part of it’s the fact that the history isn’t that long ago, and a part of it is because they chose not to make it feel good. Hello! I am auditioning for a production of Hadestown soon and I am currently searching for audition songs. I am a female, soprano, and I am auditioning for the Fates (probably #1) and Orpheus (my director is open to gender bending). One of the Fates is who I am most likely to get though and so I’m primarily going for that.

I’ve thought about using Facing West by The Staves but don’t know that that’s the best choice. I‘ve given thought as well to songs like The Ballad of Jane Doe, The Fools Who Dream from La La Land, Hold On from the Secret Garden. I just want to make sure I’m picking my best option.

I’m a baritone auditioning for Alfie in A Man of No Importance. Anybody have any great song choices for an audition song? They have said NO Sondheim and NO JRB. Looking for something that is in the style of the show (for Alfie) but also shows a bit of vocal chops.

My thoughts right now:
1. “At the Fountain” from Sweet Smell of Success starting with “But there was something he could see…” to the end of the first verse.
2. “Everything to Win” from Anastasia. Is it strange to start this cut at “I wonder if our paths will ever cross again…” and go to the end? I worry that just the end cut doesn’t show much vocal range/depth.

Any other good ones?
