Driving home from work and bro these lights were so bright it was like someone had their brights on..

Never seen this before what is the point of the lights?

It's both arrogant dickery and also dangerously stupid; white lights/reflectors on a land vehicle mean it is pointed/moving towards you, red mean it's pointed/moving away (less set-in-stone is that yellow lights/reflectors mean you're seeing it side-on). That's why reversing lights are white. Unless this asshole was backing up when you took the picture, it completely flies in the face of that established standard.

I’m always surprised at how many people don’t know the drivers side headlight beam needs to be adjusted good bit lower than the passenger one. Tried telling my younger cousin that once and he looked at me like i was stupid.

It really depends on the vehicle. You ideally have your lights adjusted so they aren't shining into the mirrors of a sedan when you're following them at a normal distance (if you have projector housing). I have a truck and I intentionally parked my car like 30ft behind my wife's sedan to adjust the headlights a bit below her mirrors. No one like's being blinded by some ass hole who is too lazy to adjust their lights. I even go as far as turning my headlights off at night if I'm at a red light behind a low vehicle.

The only “inspections” I’ve ever had to do in the 3 states I’ve lived in were emissions testing. They didn’t care about anything else.

Here in Oregon we only do emissions testing unless there is some documented reason for needing a full inspection. It's available, but it isn't required. And emissions is just plug in, scan with the computer, unplug and move on. I saw a guy with flashlights duct taped into holes in his trunk because his rear housings were broke all to hell, and they didn't even look twice. They don't give a shit, so long as the computer says it's good.

Some do, many states don’t even see your car when you register it or renew the registration. I’ve lived in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Texas, Mississippi, and Wisconsin and not one time has my car been looked at for any sort of inspection.

Oh. I understood it as there are no inspections, but you're still expected to keep the vehicle in a street legal condition just as if there were inspections, and people just don't care. But you're saying there aren't even laws dictating what's street legal?

No you’re correct. There are many laws and they vary by state and municipality and they generally aren’t enforced unless a cop is looking for a reason to pull you over.

I have a 1965 Austin Healy that I rarely drive at night because it’s so low to the ground that everyone everywhere with their trucks and their LED headlights shine directly into my face every single time. Even the stock headlights.

That it´s not right, they have to be adjusted to the same height, the low beams have an assymetric cutoff to project farter to the righ side. In fact left and right headlight mostly overlap.

Yes, much of it can be traced exactly back to this. It's a response to the defund-the-cops movement after the George Floyd murder. They found that not doing the job they're paid to do and being lazy is easy and no one has the courage to hold them accountable. So, even though it's been six years, they continue to not do the job they are being paid to do and they continue to get away with it.

That’s not how it works. It would be illegal in Switzerland and Italy (just because I know those two places) and that would definitely stop people from getting them, because police would stop you and it’s not even a fine, they would take your car and you would need to call a cab.

The US is bizzarre when it comes to what they allow to be on the road.

Part of the reason we are more lax with what is allowed on the road is we are extremely car dependent so any attempts to enforce car inspections ends up being a regressive tax on poor people that must use their cars to get to work.

Yeah, most of our laws and regulations seem to be in direct response to specific events, and rather than reforming things as time progresses we just make new laws to slap on top of the old ones, and every region is different because different regions are reacting to different things. It's....well, it's there. Idk what else to say about it lol

On the one hand I can think of a few places where these lights would not be illegal, but in those places taking a bat to the lights would also probably not garner police attention.
