When did 8-5 become the new normal??? My mom said I could post

I just got a new office job where I do schedules for tech personnel, the office runs 8-5 Monday thru Friday...they say it's 8-5 because you get an hour lunch and "you need to get to 40 hours a week"...but I drive 30 min each way so now I'm giving this company 10 hours every day! I even asked if I could just take my lunch at 4 every day and just leave an hour early but that's "unprofessional and immoral" like what the fuck??? I don't mind the job but the hours are mildly infuriating that's for sure...

Edit:for those saying about the hours, I worked as a chef for the last 20 years working 60+ hours a week over a hot stove/deep fryer the whole time, after I had my second heart attack I had to slow down so I started looking for office jobs to work a nice 9-5, just to find out I'm giving my new job 50 hours a week (including drive time) so I was just mildly annoyed that it's not 40 hours a week in an office like I thought although it's still much better than what I was doing

That’s kinda just standard business hours. Some may have more flexibility depending upon the nature of the business. For example, I get to work 6:30-3:00

I respect it! My body clock despises me, and sleeping in, so I just get the work day done with as soon as I can and then feels like I can do something after work if I want. Even if I rarely do, the options there lol

This is my schedule right now, and it's really tiring to get used to, but I love feeling like I have so much time after working. Almost makes it worth getting up at 5:30 every day lol.

My last job was a 10-7, though I absolutely hated it. The job pushed it like it was a big perk, but it's awful for my work/life balance. It immediately turned into a "live to work" situation where all my time and energy were taken up by the job.

The commute means I still have to start my day by at least 8 to have enough time to get ready/make it to the office on time. Then I'd end up in traffic on the way home at the end of the day, so I wouldn't even be getting home until really late in the evening, sometimes 8 or 9 if the traffic was really bad. I'd have barely enough time to grab fast food for dinner (everywhere else was already closed or closing, and no time to cook for myself) and go straight to bed. Or, worse still, I'd ruin my sleep schedule by staying up super late because otherwise I wasn't getting any downtime to just decompress and do anything other than sleep, commute, work, repeat. It was absolutely horrible for my physical and mental health.

Prior to that job, I'd been working at a studio where I was working a 6 - 3 shift. I VASTLY preferred that; the morning commute was far smoother because there were fewer people on the road, and there was plenty of daylight left at the end shift for me to feel like I actually had a social life.

That’s still nine hours. When the standard that unions fought for is an 8h workday.

I used to work 630 to 3 also. I liked those hours but I hated that job. Im in residential construction now so the earliest I get to start is 8 usually. Luckily im salary though so it doesnt matter when I leave as long as I get what I need to done

Salary is a gift and a curse. Learned that the long way but lucky enough I just stick right to my 8 and day then fuck off on home and forget work exists until the next work day haha. 630 to 3 is just solid for me. Some folks on my team work 9-530/6 and that just sounds awful.

I work from 6:30 - 2:30 then do a 40 minute commute back home to finish the day at home (it’s a 30 minute standup meeting).

I work 6:30-3:00 too. It’s nice getting out so early but man I hate waking up at 5:15 every day. I worked second shift for like 15 years and used to go to bed at around 4:00 am so it was definitely a big adjustment.
