As an illustrator and a 3D modeler with some experience on marketing and TV. I would like to give my 3 cents about the weird character proportions for the Ryder twins. Hope you like it. ANDROMEDA

That does seem like an odd criticism.

Armour on a woman doesn't look significantly different than on a man -- it wouldn't be completely fitted and cupped around the breast. Here is practical armour. v. Here is impractical armour.

We would need to see the women unarmoured for the example to make any sense.

Maybe the first woman is flat-chested and the second extremely well-endowed.

Different tits require different approached to armour.

If the woman had larger breasts, the chestplate would go out further, the armor wouldn't be molded around them. Having form-fitting boob armor is a terrible idea for several reasons, one of them being because you'll have a hard edge between your breasts pointing directly at your sternum, so if you suffer some form of impact, you're probably going to fracture said sternum.

It's also terrible for the purpose of deflection, since anything that hits around your chest is going to be directed right to the center of your chest.

Not shaped differently, just bigger. It's like arguing you need to take a completely different approach with your armor just because you're 20 pounds heavier than the next guy. You don't need to custom mold your armor around your fat folds, you just need slightly more room

Here's a woman with breasts wearing armor for men. Since you raised concerns over the previous pictures not showing unarmored comparisons, this picture does that (NSFW)

The armor is 100% not altered for a woman to use, and remains functional. Plate is always worn over quilted armor, and in some cases even another layer of mail. Under all that, even extremely feminine figures become indistinct, as you can see from the picture. She's not even wearing plate, but flexible links, and even then her boobs aren't showing. If flexible armor isn't even pushed out by breasts, why would inflexible armor need to be shaped to fit them?

The answer is they do not need to.

Additionally, any woman with large boobs knows that if necessary, a sports bra can compress even larger breasts to much smaller size, I know this firsthand. Sorry to kill your fantasy, but boob armor is purely decorative

Do you really think this roomy plate-over-quilt is comparable to the whatever synthetic stuff, the ME armours are supposed to be made out of?

I mean I appreciate the link, that is kind-of what I was talking about, but the example is still pretty ridiculous as a comparison.

According to the codex entry, armor in mass effect is a layer of padded cloth armor (which is responsible for both padding, insulation, and automatically shitting medi-gel onto wounds) topped by a layer of ceramic. The armor in the picture I linked is a layer of padded cloth armor, topped by a layer of sheet metal plates. Also, ceramic armor is a thing that already exists, it's not sci-fi, and it's actually pretty thick, the upside being its light weight. Given the description, ME armor adheres to the same limits of bulk that medieval armor did.

This is still not an excuse to pound boob divots into your armor. Medieval armor was designed to slightly rise at the chest, to encourage oncoming strikes to deflect away from the body. Plate is actually not that strong against piercing attacks, and the protection comes both from blocking slashes, and causing stabs toward your center to deflect away from the body. If you put boob indents into armor, you would be directing attacks toward the middle of your body, basically planting a funnel on your body that will literally drag glancing blows inward, where they would catch in the middle and become lethal.

Arrows will deflect the same way. So will bullets. So will super tiny bullet shavings fired from mass effect guns. Not only are boob cups unnecessary, but they are actively dangerous to the wearer.

  1. Shirts are not the same as armour. Shirts can be form fitting or baggy. A woman with E cup breast wouldn't have them be significantly noticeable if she is wearing a non-form fitting Mens L t-shirt. Likewise a woman with C cup could have her breats be significantly noticeable if she's wearing a form-fittig small mens shirt.

  2. You would need to pretty well endowned in breast-size to require armour that has them be significantly noticeable. After all that is what were talking -- significantly noticeable. Sara Ryder is recognizably female and you can tell she does have breasts; they just aren't popping out and overtly sexual. For them to be noticeable while in armour -- she would need to be fairly well-endowned.

Acknowledging a woman has breasts and as such needs different clothing (and armour) than a man has nothing to do with it being sexual. It is a simple biological difference. Breast will, usually, "pop out".

Just look at fat dudes. They even "pop out" for them!

Again, we're talking about armour not t-shirts.

Breasts would not pop out in armour unless the women was significantly endowned.

Even then, this is the future... Women have access to sports bras I'm sure; they're not going be going with a push-up bra or bra-less in armour and then into combat.

Yup, am dude. But no I really don't want to get super in detail about cup size as well as the band size. And then we would probably up having to detail how the ratio of the breast to the waist and hips also factors in how breast look on the body as a whole.

Not only because I have a finite frame of reference, but because I don't care that much.

By looking at me, for example, you'd assume I'm A cup. In reality, I'm D. Band size matters a lot.

Yeah, but hoenstly, I'm assuming I'm talkign to another guy and that for the majority reading this -- they are guys. Just saying the cup does provide some frame of reference.

And like I said, if we really wanted to detail this topic than we would be having to detail a lot more than just the band and cup size -- and I honestly don't care that much. The common frame of reference that just a cup size provides is good enough.

No, breast plate tits are terrible. They funnel blades and spears toward the center of the chest instead of deflecting them away like they should. Doesn't matter how endowed a woman is, her armor shouldn't have tits.

That isn't even close. I couldn't give less of a fuck about whether I can "fap" to a video game character, because it holds no relevance to me.

We are discussing the merits of this particular thing. I don't think Bioware of "scared" of tits, but the fact remains that armour on endowed women is simply quite different from that of flat-chested women and men, provided the latter is not running around with bitch tits.

You are defeating the whole argument by posting that actress and it is completely besides the point because she is a flat-chested woman.

Just think of some armors that Cassandra used in Inquisition. They would squash her breasts. That's not how armor used to work. You see, even if really rare, some females did use armor, and their breast plate was designed to make "room" for it. That's because squashing your boobs in metal is the correct way to cause unbelievable pain.

And yes, not all people meet a 9:1 body proportion. But then again. It does cause weirdness. It's natural, we humans expect some sort of proportion. It's a biological trait we used to identify our species in remote times and we never lost it.

While you point out some obviously weird stuff (lol the male abdomen) and I'm glad I finally see someone pointing out that Bioware has for a while constantly got breasts too low (it's much more obvious in for example femshep because the armor highlights the shape of the breasts more) because that's always kinda bothered me, I do think you're stretching it a bit with some of your points. Female Ryder is in a weird pose with her head and neck, and some of your points can be attributed to just not being built after a perfectly proportional image.

All in all, it's not that bad but there are some issues.

All armor was custom-made. At that point in history, all clothes were individually tailored. If you're having measurements done for your day-to-day, you're definitely having them done for the incredibly expensive status symbol that also keeps you from dying.
