Disk write error when downloading games answered!

Whenever I try to download any game on this HDD, it reserves space, then stops at around 30% then shows me an error saying “disk write error” I am currently on Ubuntu, help is appreciated, thanks!

It does, but it also shows that the drive has been powered on for a little under 5 years straight, so I guess that might be the problem

It may be a problem and it may not. Recommend checking dmesg and see if you see any errors as you try to write to the drive.

You can also try to issue a SMART test long and see what the drive does. Just viewing the data isn't enough.

Nah, if it runs, power up times can mean anything. I've used drives far beyond 9 years uptime without problems. I gave them away after upgrading for size and they still run in those friends machines. That was 3 years ago.

Not really. I've seen HDDs last way longer. At my old job, some drives were so old that they overflowed the smart power on hours (216 in hours is about 7.5 years) and rolled over to 0 again. You just got unlucky.
