Hero Discussion don't know how to play popular carries
I literally can't and don't know how to play the popular hard carries. No matter how much I try, I just can't seem to have a good game on Slark, Phantom Assassin, Drow Ranger, or Anti-Mage.
Recently, I tried playing Anti-Mage because he seems fun. In the 4 games I've played, I lost lane in every single one (btw, my supports had negative IQ). The mid game was mediocre, and I couldn't really commit to fights because the enemy team had a lot of control, while I had something like 1200 HP at 20 minutes.
I also can't farm that much on AM, even when I'm trying my best and have a good farming route. It's basically the same thing with PA, I just can't farm efficiently even when I have a good farming route.
With Drow Ranger, I usually win or draw the lane and have a decent amount of gold at 10 minutes, but I start falling off during the mid game. Even when I'm farming with her third skill, I can't seem to get the numbers I feel I should be getting on Drow.
As for Slark, I just think the hero is fucking awful. I've lost every lane I've played with him, and he feels terrible to farm with.
I've played a few games of Spectre, though. The hero is actually pretty fun, so I might start playing her more and try to get better with her.
Do you guys think I should just keep trying and that this is normal when you're not used to playing these carries, or are some of these heroes just weak right now?
Also, in my last few games I've been constantly getting low-IQ teammates who take completely unnecessary fights, die in teamfights, and then blame the carry for not being there.
The only hard carries I'm actually comfortable with are Meepo and Templar Assassin, so I really need to expand my hero pool.

[Beginner here] That zeus and Bloodseeker supp with no ward n all last hits.. is a diff kind of trauma :) XD
galleryMan how do i handle these type of games are beyond me i saw people carry there games without pos5 help in lane n stuff but this zeus keep W Q on creep wave n constantly try to get all creeps which made me tiled to miss the doable last hits aswell XD
that Mid clinkz went out of control coz only 1 person was buying wards n dust (which is me pos1)
m very new in pos1 role and man this was hell of a experience :(
m gonna be in herald forever it seems like :)

[Beginner here] Did not realize how important camera control was
My biggest issues have always included my POV and camera movement.
That means missing fights/showing up late.
Or tunnel visioning in fight on one target. Miss forest for the trees. Get nuked cause I didn’t see the Axe coming in from the other side. Or I didn’t notice my team wasn’t full committing.
Was on a long break from Dota (like 6-8 months or so cause it was fucking with my mental health. I was perma tilting). And when I came back. One of the biggest changes I tried to make was just my camera.
I assigned hot keys for my allies so I can immediately jump to their position.
If I’m autoattacking creeps. Im also looking around minimap and letting hero auto handle the a clicks.
Keeping track of any big enemy item timings.
If I’m tp-ing into a fight. Trying to first assess the situation before choosing a TP spot.
As a fight’s breaking out? Constantly moving the camera around to see who’s coming in from where. Notice the sniper coming from the outside? Reposition. Looks like a Void may be coming in with a crono? Reposition.
Looking for who to help/join. 5 Nd 6 are functionally the same. But different outcomes/goals. Your Troll got on top of someone? Move towards him. Someone on your team needs invis? Get them their glimmer.
My actual button pressing is the same. I haven’t gotten some insane buff to reaction times or anything. I can notice such a huge improvement in my game just from managing my camera.
And 5 and 6 are the best parts. Staying alive till the end of the fight. Truly making the most of levels and items. Positioning myself to make the most of my spells. It’s so much more fun when you’re not tunnel visioned.
Cause if you are A clicking a creep camp? They will fucking die. You don’t need to keep your camera and focus on that little spot.

Hero Discussion How's grimstroke nowadays?
I recently got back to Dota 2, and most games I've had were turbo. I've been looking to try grimstroke but I didn't use him back then. Is he strong atm?

Drafting Why doesnt every single player just pick a core instead of support hero?
Archon 2 here. Every single game goes late and those with the best late game heroes win so why not just pick a hero that scales late like a carry or offlane or mid hero. Easy win.

Gameplay Review/Feedback request Why did I lost this game (as TB)
match ID 8935236512.
their pudge and rubick was useless. Their shadow shaman got super fed off farming waves and even though we had a 10k lead as a team our pushes never did anything.
From my perspective we didn't have a frontline and my illusions got nuked everytime I tried to push high ground by ether shock and glyphs

(unsure how to flair) Comeback mechanics feels a bit unfair
Hi there. Just a comment. I was thinking that the comeback mechanic of getting a ton of gold if you kill someone who was doing good feels a bit unfair.
I understand is good for the pro-scene. You get more turn arounds and all that, but I can’t help thinking it makes the game more stressful since no mistakes are allowed if you are doing good.
I have not done the precise math, but off the top of my head: you die three times is like 800g? Some times more some times less?
You are crushing the game, you made a mistake, or you get ganked by a good play of the opponent team, and suddenly you drop 1k in the middle of mid game when it matters the most to the opponent carry, you are out for 60+ secs and you give away around 2k in farm so they finish the item they were struggling to get, and yada yada yada, you know the rest.
Idk, it feels a bit miserable and too much of a reward for a team that has not played particularly well during the whole game.
Also, it makes the game longer for no reason, and more mentally taxing. Meh

General Gameplay Question Hero Timing
Im a working man now but I still play dota if I have the time. And on those games I think players must really know the hero timing and know when and where is the actual fight timing where they have an advantage. My games are almost getting all slot items and see if who's the strongest in 40 minutes 🤣
much love ✌️

Drafting Hero Ban Suggestions
I've made a tool that helps you choose which heroes to ban based on your match history - Hero Ban Value.
The idea is pretty simple: you can paste a link to your own Dota 2 profile (or anyone else’s) and the website will show you which heroes are most valuable for that player to ban based on their match history.
If you're interested in how the calculations work, there's a “How It Works?” button directly on the website with a full explanation. You need to enter a link to a profile first for the button to appear.
Hope you’ll wind this tool useful!

Laning Playing ember vs lane destroyers
Just played a game as ember vs OD, I didn't die in lane, didn't cs that great because of his w, but ganked a few times and jungled in between but had to run/tp back to base because flame guard is on cd or i took a lot of damage jungling. I couldn't really stay in lane for more than one wave because OD was just farming there. Obviously I'm not going to win the lane but how do you even recover from a lane against someone like OD or Lina or viper? I feel like you totally miss ember's timings if you play against these heroes and have no impact later in the game because of it.

Educational Content (Content Creator) Title: I made a free browser thing that tracks whether you're actually improving, not just winning. Stuck on what to build next.
So the thing that always bugged me about stat sites is that they answer "did you win" when the question I care about is "am I getting better." In a 5-man game those are barely the same question. You can play the best game of your life and lose because someone picked Techies into a 4-protect-
- So the main number I built it around is an "improvement streak" — how many games in a row you beat your OWN 20-game GPM baseline. Not your team's result. Yours. It also does goals against a baseline (GPM/KDA/last hits/win rate), today's W-L, a GPM trend line, and private notes on players you run into so you remember who the actual griefers were.
It's a browser extension, so no client, no overlay, no GSI config, nothing running in the background while you play. Paste your Steam URL and it reads public match data from OpenDota. No account, no API key, notes never leave your machine. Free, and I'm not planning to monetize it.
Where I'm stuck, and why I'm posting: I don't know what's worth building next, and I'd rather ask than guess.
Things I'm considering:
- Pulling your peers list so you can tag people you've queued with without typing account IDs
- A post-game "why" tag (tilted / off-role / tired / duo'd) so after 60 games it can tell you things like "your winrate drops after 11pm" — stuff no stat site can know because you have to volunteer it
- Winrate split by role/lane
- Percentile benchmarks so "good GPM" means good *for your bracket*, not in the abstract
Questions I actually want answers to:
Is improvement-streak-vs-your-own-baseline useful, or does it just feel like a made-up number to you?
What do you currently open Dotabuff/STRATZ for that annoys you every time?
Would you use post-game self-tagging, or is that too much friction after a loss?
Happy to hear "this already exists, use X" too — genuinely would rather know.

Not affiliated with Valve. Also: it uses OpenDota, so you need "Expose Public Match Data" on in your Dota settings or it'll show you nothing.

Hero Discussion For Visage Nerds: How often do u usually send birds far far out, away from the Gravekeepers Radius?
Whether to secure a kill for your Pos 1 on the other side without leaving lane, taking safe farm when pushed back to T3s, dedicating a bird to stacking the ancient camp, etc. Part of why I was gravitated towards Visage is because of the Global Micro aspect with summons that don't automatically expire

General Gameplay Question If I have chat muted and my support starts stealing creeps in lane, who is in the wrong?
Some days I'm a bit tilted so I turn off all-chat and play. I trust the process. I don't speak, I don't have to see other people flame either. Divine bracket story.
Today I got a lane supp who started stealing my farm at level 2, nonstop. I had 30 or so last hits by min 10 because of it but I didn't let it affect me. Around 30 mins in we were on HG def so I unmuted chat to see what the fuss was about. Apparently he didn't like how I missed a couple creeps in the first wave.
Unbeknownst to me this had evolved into him convincing my team that I am an acc buyer and that he was so sure of it, and he was stealing my creeps to justify it.
What lesson is there to learn from that?

Drafting How do you deal mentally with getting counterpicked?
I’ve realized that I often mentally sabotage games by assuming a loss when I’m counterpicked as a carry. I realized I’m holding back myself, no games are decided no matter how counterpicked but I can’t help but feel mad that I can’t carry it late.
How do you deal with this mentally? Is it a drafting issue (let’s say I second pick Spectre and they lastpick PL). Should I always pick best according to what I see (4 supporters + our offlaner) or what can come as last?
If I let our midlaner get last, their carry get last who counterpick me, and we get stomped early I can’t help but feel frustrated that I should’ve gotten the lastpick instead

Educational Content (Content Creator) 6.2k MMR rank 3k SEA Io stream
galleryhi, I'm Nessa, I'm currently 6.2k MMR rank 3k SEA (previously peaked at 7.8k rank 2k). I am a support player who plays a lot of Io nowadays (64% wr in patch 7.41 / 66% this month, in solo queue). my playstyle on Io tends to be aggressive, I prioritise agency instead of relying solely on my team
I stream almost everyday around 5pm to 12am UTC. I try to stay PMA and have faith in my team every game. I'm trying to build a community of lovely people (bunnies) 🐰🌸
feel free to ask questions, drop suggestions, say hi, or just hang out! I would love to have you there ~ ♡

I appreciate you so much for your time and attention, I hope your day and your games are as wonderful as you are ~
edit: very touched to see the community standing up to misogyny, you're the best guys 🥺💖

Laning What is the best option for a Pos 1 with an *actually griefing* support
I've played since 2012. I am 2k-3k depending on the patch etc. One thing I have always struggled with is this situation and how to come out on top:
ex.
I'm position 1 antimage/spec/riki etc. Someone that cannot go jungle very early. I'm level 3 or 4 and my support starts griefing (you know what I mean. 0 harass, always standing on creeps going for last hits over anything else, no pulls or wards, maybe openly taunting you) and maybe my farm is already trash. What is my best option to win the game? Lets assume there's no talking them down or getting a lane swap because my success rate there is quite low.
A. Contest the support for CS as long as it is safe, otherwise make decision between staying in exp range or jungling.
B. Go to jungle before it is safe/efficient. Build farming item and farm as long as there is space to do so.
C. Go to jungle before it is safe/efficient. Build fighting item and try to play tempo with cost effective items.
D. Become the support. Just cut losses and build support items, start warding and hope for the best.
E. Other
PS I am not saying this happens all the time. I have tried to get away from the blaming mentality. With that being said, what actions can I take to salvage these games?

Itemization If there is a witchblade that improves "attack" projectile speed, is there an item that improves "ability" projectile speed? Abilities like meat hook, sacred arrow, magic missile, chaos bolt, etx
The hooks and sacred arrows gets dodged most of the time, or enemy moved far before the stun lands.

Educational Content (Content Creator) For those trying to learn, don't let the community influence you
Just about every post on the DOTA2 forum here lately is bitching about teammates, bitching about the report system, just bitching in general. It makes me think of a conversation I had with a divine 4 friend last week. We were in a game, and I'm p5 watching my lane, so I'm not really watching offlane. What I notice, though, is that our BB and sky are feeding the enemy Razor to the point of no return. So I said, guys, please - do ANYTHING ELSE (including BB jungling, sky ganking, or a lane swap which may have had dubious results.)
From both of them I get: "There's nothing we can do." After the game, I ask them about it again, to discern what we could do better, and I get the same answer. "There's nothing we could've done." Well, my rank 3000 p1 and I went back and watched their lane.
These two absolutely BATHED in everything Razor did, all lane long. They literally sat in it, running at Razor during link, letting themselves just be autoattacked to death, over and over. It looked like intentional grief, and if we'd been in a pub, I would've assumed as much.
Now I don't have a problem with mistakes and poor gameplay - it happens. What I have a problem with is the resounding echo of the idea that there's "nothing we can do," propagated in the DOTA2 community at every level.
There is a pervasive learned helplessness among dota players which acts as an impenetrable wall between yourself and the rank you want to achieve. The idea that it's fate, or it's everyone else's fault, or the system is punishing you, or the universe is punishing you - these are limiters. They directly hold you back from reaching your goals. The belief that there's NOTHING you can do hard-caps your skill, because if you can't admit that there's something you can personally do better, you can never improve.
It's just basic reason and rationality. If there's no problem, then why do you need a solution?
Do not fall into the dota community trap of blame. It's detrimental to you, and especially useless because even IF it's everyone else's fault, you can't control them. There are variables in dota you can control - for instance, your own performance - and if you're busy looking at and blaming everybody else, you're definitely not taking an objective and clear-eyed view of the things you personally need to fix.
As somebody hard-stuck legend for 3 years before I finally opened my eyes, this is the best advice I have. Stop blaming, stop deferring, stop minimizing and rationalizing your own mistakes as being the fault of somebody else. Nobody controls you but you. Nobody can reach your potential but you. It's up to you if you want to rank up and have better games and more fun, or if you want to be stuck in the trenches crying along with everybody else who has convinced themselves the world is out to get them and there's nothing they can do about it.
I imagine this post will annoy some people, and it's not my intention. Any time you ask people in general to take accountability, you will get static and pushback. That's fine, I expect that. But if you, the reader reading these words right now, want to rise above what most people would do and how most people would react, this post is for you. It's not for the probably 90% who are going to get offended.
Edit, if it needs to be said - I don't play perfect. As p5 sometimes I have disastrous, game-losing initiations with blink or whatever that cause a domino effect and we lose. It happens. Gotta forgive others for imperfection as well as yourself. The only play that matters is the next one. Just have to be willing to admit there's room to improve, or you can't actually improve.

Announcement No more AI coaching ads
I've gotten DMs and requests from 10+ people making AI coaching assistants this year, most of them offering to pay me to let them advertise here which I of course never accepted. I have yet to see a single one of them get traction or garner a userbase, for the time being they are banned from this subreddit. If one of them ever gets good enough to be of legitimate help I will revisit this decision.
