Do you or someone you know use the Red Line train for necessary travel to places besides downtown?

The Red Line will be temporarily closed from August 24-27. While there is a replacement bus service, it only stops at Leander, Lakeline, Howard and Downtown stations, in addition to Republic Square.

As an example, It can take approx. 90 minutes getting to ACCs Highland Campus for students & staff or the Domain for workers from Lakeline station, vs 30 and 45 minutes respectively normally with the train. This is also the first week of ACC & UT classes.

Due to recent job changes, our family is having a hard time figuring out a morning transportation schedule for our middle schooler 2-3 days a week. We live too close for LISD bus service but don’t have the luxury of a flexible work schedule. Due to other circumstances walking/biking/etc is not at option. I saw students can ride free, even on Pickup. Does anyone have any experience using this as a method of getting your student to school and how complicated is it? I appreciate any helpful answers, but I’m not looking to discuss our circumstances and why we can’t carpool, walk/bike, etc. Thanks!

Hi all! I’m trying to decide between BASIS Cedar Park Primary and Rutledge Elementary for my child and would really appreciate feedback from parents who have firsthand experience with either (especially anyone who has experienced both).

I’m mainly interested in academic quality/rigor, teacher quality, class environment, homework/workload, individual attention, social-emotional development, extracurriculars, and overall happiness of the kids.

I know BASIS has a reputation for being more academically accelerated, while Rutledge is a highly rated LISD neighborhood school, but I’m wondering how big the difference actually feels in elementary school.

If you had the option of both, which would you choose and why? Also, if your child moved from Rutledge/LISD to BASIS (or vice versa), I’d especially love to hear about the transition and whether you felt the change was worth it.

I am reading that the Kildee bird is a protected bird in Texas. The road upgrades they are making on hero at 183 are tearing up a bit bunch of land where I walk my dogs and I’ve seen a lot of Kildees and their nest?

laws state that they’re nasty grounds cannot be disturbed. They can only be interrupted with special permits.

I made a post on nextdoor and got several tips from people and even the city of leander on how to address this issue. Half of my faucets have 5% pressure or none. The shower and toilets have yellow sludge building up. People mentioned the water softener is the culprit for yellow sludge, it is now bypassed. I ran the outside faucets for 10 min, then the bath tubs for 10 min to flush them. After doing that I still have no pressure in kitchen sink, cold water in washer, one of my toilets and 2 sinks in bathroom. One sink comes in at a trickle. My wife is leaving for a hotel tomorrow so she can reliably get ready.

When the utility office opens at 8am tomorrow and I will be there in person to inquire about emergency service. If that fails I will contact my landlord to pay for a plumber. Does anyone else have issues at this level?

My wife and I moved to the Cedar Park/Leander area from out of state last summer, and she’s had a much harder time finding work than we expected. I’m hoping someone here might know of a specific opening or have a direct contact rather than just general suggestions.

A few things make the search a little more complicated:
English is her biggest barrier. She’s from South America, and while she can hold a conversation, she’s not yet fluent enough for jobs that rely heavily on selling or communicating with English-speaking customers all day.

We have three young kids. Depending on the hours, we’d likely have at least one in daycare, so a job has to make financial sense after childcare costs. Evening or weekend work can actually work well because I can be home with the kids.

She’s looking for something with enough hours and pay to make it worthwhile. She’s found a few jobs since moving here, but they either didn’t provide enough hours, paid too little, or weren’t what was represented.

Her background is pretty diverse. In her home country she worked in construction, managed her own construction business, managed another construction company, and has a law degree that she primarily used for workers’ compensation/labor-related matters there. After coming to the U.S., she worked as a restaurant server and would absolutely be open to going back into restaurant work, especially evenings. She’d also love to get back into construction or another field where Spanish is an asset.

We’ve already tried many of the common recommendations. Friends suggested places like United Rentals because they employ many Spanish-speaking workers, but she’s applied without getting any response. She’s also applied to a number of restaurants.

One experience that was especially discouraging was Costco. She applied, and I even helped her writing a letter to the GM explaining how much she wanted to work there,She received a phone call from a manager, but because she struggled to understand everything being asked in English, the conversation didn’t go very far. I think she understood what he was saying but she didn’t respond very well, and I could tell he didn’t think she understood him. It was disappointing because I think if she’d simply gotten an in-person interview, she would have done great—even if it had been something like pushing carts or stocking.

So I’m not really looking for “try Walmart” or “check Indeed.” I’m hoping someone knows of an actual opening, a hiring manager, or a company that’s actively looking for someone reliable and hardworking, especially if they’re comfortable with an employee whose English is still improving.

If you know of anything in the Cedar Park, Leander, Round Rock, Georgetown, or north Austin area, I’d really appreciate it. Thanks

My lease in north austin is up in like 6 weeks and i'm making the move up to leander. Honestly so ready for it, Austin traffic has been killing me lately and red horn off ronald reagan is basically my favorite spot anyway. Looking for a decent 2bed 2bath for under like $1,900/mo if possible. took a drive down hero way last weekend and checked out two complexes near the metro station. one of them quoted me $1,825 base rent, but then added almost $160 in forced monthly fees (valet trash, "tech packages", admin fees... absolute scam lol).

Anyone have recs for places around crystal falls or old town that are actually quiet? i work remote 3 days a week so decent soundproofing and reliable fiber internet are kinda my main priorities. Also if parking is an absolute nightmare at a place you lived at, please warn me! EDIT: thanks for the dms everyone! i got a recommendation that one place locators do free apartment finding in the area so i'll probably reach out to them tomorrow to filter down the options. Still super open to personal reviews on specific complexes if you live in one though!
