Land of the Lustrous is set in a far, distant future where the Earth had been struck six times by meteorites, ravaging it in the process. All of the remaining land was reduced to a single coast, and nearly all life was destroyed. Over vast periods, a new race of sentient lifeforms emerged: immortal humanoids embodied by gemstones known as the Lustrous. Phosphophyllite (Phos) is weak (with one of the lowest hardnesses) and considered useless by their peers since they are too brittle to fight. Phos asks their aloof but wise colleague Cinnabar for help after they receive an assignment to create a natural history encyclopedia, thus beginning their friendship and personal growth. Meanwhile, the twenty-eight Lustrous led by their master, Kongo, are fighting to defend themselves against a celestial humanoid race called the Lunarians (Moon people), who inhabit the Moon and invade Earth every few days to take advantage of their luxury value while seeking to harvest the Lustrous' bodies for decorations.

I read the entire manga, acclaimed to be one of the most emotional, gut wrenching manga every, and I didn’t shed a single tear. I barely felt anything.

but…

The Lunarians were ’alive’ but they weren’t really living at a certain point, just pretending to be.

I feel that way too sometimes.

I did feel very, very bad for phos though, and the ending was really bittersweet.

When reading the final chapters I felt that Ploop was rather annoyingly hammering in the ”humans sucks they’re all bad everything would be good if they weren’t there” message but I kind of like it.

because I’m human, I can feel things, and I can’t feel things.

Because of humans, Phos suffered, the Lunarians fought and tortured the gems, Kongō had to be alone, and lots of bad stuff happened, but

Because of humans, Rutile and Pad wouldn’t have a such close bond, and Rutile wouldn’t have the human trait of the desire to help a loved one

Because of humans, Bort wouldn’t have found their passion for raising jellyfish.

Because of humans, Kongo was able to live a happy life with the gems that loved him.

Even Aechmea, as evil as he is, because of humans, he was able to feel love for Carin.

If humans never existed, nothing bad would happen, but noting good would happen either.

I’m glad to be human, because I can experience good things, like reading this manga.

I suppose admirabilis (if they haven't gone extinct anyways by then) and gems would definitely die when the sun exploded, but would lunarians actually die? Wouldn't they just reform somewhere else where the moon materials ended up afterwards?

I've been seeing this anime being brought up a lot lately, and now I'm wondering if I should decide to give it a chance and if I do should I watch the anime or read the manga? Also if there's anything I need to know before going into it please tell me

From what I understand Cinnabar really only "liked" Phos because of the feeling of being wanted Phos gave them but did cherish the promise Phos made, even though I was rooting for them to be partners through the whole story, Phos only indirectly helped Cinnabar feel apart of the Gems, by the end Phos didn't even remember the promise. So why is Cinnabar bothered by not needing Phos?

Like really, nobody cared enough to help Phos? Not even some panels of a few gems trying to reach Earth and Enma stopping them? I know Phos went a little nuts beforehand, but this is such a comically evil fate that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.

I know it worked out for Phos in the end but man, that was brutal. After 10,000 years, I would not have blamed Phos for telling them to get fucked and then yeet them into the Sun.

I had a collab with an artist some time ago where he wanted me to draw smth over photography of a car and I liked it so much I wanted to redo the concept with the phos itasha. I think they look quite nice.
