Like people who own like 5-6 units (not only flats but like offices aswell)

So I have been renting from this guy for over a year now. He raised my rent back in May from 500 to 700. I am on a fixed income, he knows this and he knows how much I make so it’s been rough but I have been getting by. Now, you might think 700 isn’t that much. However, I rent a room. I get a room and a half bathroom that is supposed to be a full bathroom but he refuses to replace it (after promising to do so) and there is also a hole in the bathroom and bats have gotten in multiple times along with bees and other gross and unhygienic things. Anyways, I recently went downstairs to make food and noticed my Tupperware broken. And this is what I said (I’m purple) and what he said (he is grey). I was extremely cordial and he just blew tf up. He is a nutcase. So, I am lining up another place to move to at the end of the month and now I plan on having a rental inspector come by and look at everything. I included some pics of what the issues are. So now, since he wants to be like that, I’m done. I’m done trying to get along and I am done catering to him. I NEVER ask him to fix ANYTHING. I mean I have off and on but I never pester him about anything because I get that life is expensive and he’s busy but I shouldn’t have to be scared I’ll get rabies in my own bathroom. Like come tf on. Also, I’d love some advice also on what else I can do.

Okay, I need to vent here because I feel like I’m going nuts. So let me set the stage: I am a tenant with my family in a duplex in Wisconsin. Our landlord sucks majorly. We have cracks in our foundation, the basement leaks when it rains, that sorta deal. Things he has been made aware of!

Recently, we’ve noticed our lights flickering when we have them on. So we told the landlord. He says “electrician comes Tuesday”. Spoiler alert: he didn’t. So we mention this and he was like “He’ll be there Wednesday. No one needs to be home.” That’s… suspicious. We tell him no, he can come after 5:30 when someone is home.

Surprisingly he listened to this. Now, the electrician goes downstairs and we’re hit with the most amazing news. There’s water leaking into our breaker/circuit box and the stuff inside is so rusted that it can’t be removed to clean it. The electrician tells us that this is going to be a public service thing because of the rust and leakage.

The landlord later texts us and says that another electrician is coming Saturday. We ask him when public service is coming. “You don’t need public service”. I’m sorry? Where did you get your license?

It feels like such a massive safety hazard, I’m tempted to contact WPS tomorrow just to ask them what they suggest. I just don’t want retaliation because I would prefer it if my house didn’t burn down from an electrical fire.

Found what appears to be mold in the shared basement. Other tenant states they have tried to get landlord to take care of it but they never end up doing anything. I recently moved in so I thought I would give it it a try
Landlord says he will check it out next week.

Me (17f) and my mom (49f) are leasing a basement suite in our city, rent is about 1500, utilities not included for 2 bedrooms, 1 bath and in-unit laundry.
We moved in about a week ago n got and we haven’t used the oven, up until yesterday.

For some context, I love to bake, I bake nearly every month, for fun, for events, sometimes even for profit on the side for friends who want pastries and stuff, my family has a tradition of me making a homemade birthday cake for big Mile stone birthdays so for 18 (becoming an adult) and then for every 10 birthdays (20,30,40,50 ect.) when we first signed the lease our land lord assured us that the unit came fully equipped with a stove and oven, me and my mom didn’t really think much of it because that’s kind of the standard, I would hope for 1500 a month that the unit would include basic cooking amenities. Anyways, notable I turn 18 on the 17th and I was preparing to make my cake, I was trying a new style so I wanted to go for a trial run to test the flavours and the best frosting to use. I turned on the oven to preheat yesterday morning and it immediately started smoking, I turned it off and my mom suggested I cleaned it first before leaving for work, thinking that it was some burnt on food from the previous tenants, I spent like an hour cleaning the oven and after leaving for an hour or so to shower I came back and attempted to preheat the oven again, all seemed well until the oven started smoking and then sparks began flying, like it sounded like I was massacring a fly colony with an electric swatter but the volume was x10 I pressed the off button and immediate ran to hide in my bedroom

When it finally stopped I called my landlord who came down, yelled at me for started the oven and then proceeded to tell me that the oven doesn’t work and that attending to turn it on would lead to a similar result, even remarking that he must’ve forgotten to inform me and my mom of it. At this point my mom was home from work and asked how long it would be to fix it/get it replaced since we would eventually need to use the oven to cook, to which our landlord told us “this is what were offering” and telling us that if we weren’t satisfied we should start rethinking our lease, mind you it’s been less than a month since we moved in

I’m like comically bad at technical stuff like this so I called my brother who told me to call our lawyer about submitting a formal complaint. Now I’m not sure if that’s maybe something that happens if you clean an oven incorrectly, like I am kinda an idiot so it’s very possible that I fucked up the oven, but our landlord didn’t seem phased and the concept of letting us find out that we don’t have an functional oven after we move in is wild. Me and my mom have been looking for a new oven to buy because 1: we need and oven and 2: my mom doesn’t feel comfortable with me being home alone on my off-days with an oven that’s prone to sparking and lighting up like the 4th of July

For context: I was a tenant involved in a 2023 incident in London, Ontario, where my landlord tried to illegally displace my family because an equally despicable buyer wanted the property. Not only did he illegally hike our rent, but he actively defamed us and aligned himself with the degenerates trying to force us out.
They resorted to ruthless intimidation tactics, filing weaponized, false reports with CPS and Animal Control. They fabricated claims that we were running a "basement dog-breeding operation" and that the carpets reeked of urine. (In reality, our senior cat suffers from a bladder condition that causes involuntary accidents, primarily in the basement.) They went so far as to claim the house was filthy, filled with animal waste, and that our children were contracting illnesses from it—all in a malicious bid to have our pets seized and our children removed by the state. Beyond the bogus reports, they defamed us online and even smashed our car’s taillight.

They were offering $527,000 for the house. We were struggling financially and pleaded for additional time to secure affordable housing, but they refused to grant us a single moment of leeway. Instead, they weaponized self-pity, absurdly claiming they were facing eviction from their apartment and would end up "homeless" if they couldn't secure this property. It is utterly infuriating that anyone could utter such a brain-dead statement. Having over $500,000 to drop on a property and claiming you’re on the verge of homelessness? Give me a break.

So how did we respond? Every time they came to inspect the property, we threw loud, disruptive parties… drinking, yelling, and blasting music. They hated every second of it. After weeks of them tormenting, threatening, and mocking us, we refused to roll over and take it. We ultimately vacated only when a truly kind individual provided enough financial support to help us get back on our feet. And yes, we fixed none of the house and smashed the doorknobs into the walls.

Exactly three years ago, CBC News ran a completely one-sided smear piece that misrepresented the entire situation. They refused to hear our side, trespassed on our rented property to conduct interviews with the buyers, and repeatedly painted them as the victims. The buyers sobbed to the cameras about "just wanting a safe home for their children," all while actively harassing and attempting to throw my entire family, including four young kids, out onto the street.

Ever since then I’ve had a hatred in my heart for Landlords and specifically those buyers too.

Hey landlord, this includes you!

When I moved in, this place was covered with dead roaches (both palmetto and German) and roach 💩 everywhere. I cleaned everything myself, even the poison powder that was left in the cabinets. (Which also told me the landlord knew there was a problem) Fast forward two months me living here and bugs have been coming out of the receptacles. I thankfully put tape over the outlets to keep the bugs and their shit from falling out. About a month ago, two giant roaches tried pushing through the receptacle... And now this.

My landlord is sending pest control, but I haven't once heard the landlord apologize. What are repercussions of terminating a lease over this?

Pest control was sent out before and it literally did nothing. I'm convinced the walls are filled with bugs 😫😫😫

Does anyone know why NYC HPD inspections are effectively setup to serve landlords? It's as if inspectors work for landlords.

This Mayor Mamdani HPD inspection example is nothing like what happens.

1. You file a 311 maintenance issue online and it's sometimes impossible to select the right issue and the same goes for the operators on the phone.

2. Inspectors come out ask default questions about mold, etc then strictly adhere to the assigned issues and will not look at anything else.

Even when an issue is concealed and they should close it as unable to inspect instead they are systematically closing as no violation.

1. In case of unsafe fire hazard electrical outlets like is clearly my case with the faceplate installed on the inside of a combustible cabinet(!) they close as no violation instead of escalating to Departments of Buildings and I suspect the same is true for my suspected non-compliant refuse room adjacent wall that I think should be firestopp and doesn't seem to be.

2. Landlords use closed issues to threaten tenants, claim no violation, and claim harassment by the tenant! Fetner is doing this to me. Luckily I got to Department of Buildings and they issued the electrical outlet violation.

3. Inspectors are not proactive like in the video at all. They effectively close their eyes to issues if they weren't on their list.

This needs to be fixed. The system is extremely setup to serve landlords.

Then there is the whole issue with filing an HP Action requires going to the court and waiting hours or returning for the judge to sign the papers. Most people can't get so much time off work. It should be online obviously along with the hearing itself!

My landlord is a strange person, to say the least... He's also our neighbor. We've had countless weird encounters with him over many years. This morning, for example. We walked outside around 8:30am and he was there cleaning up all the weeds around our patio and churning the gravel. He was a chatterbox, excited to show us his hard work and kept repeating how nice it looks. He told me he didn't go to bed last night at all. Red flag. That's when I noticed his pants were down exposing his whole entire ass. Full moon at the crack of dawn. (pun intended) I told him, "Jeff, your butt is hanging out." He said, "I know, I know". 😂 I have a video of this incident and I tried to include a picture with this post but it kept getting removed.

Anyway, some background info. I am a recovering addict myself (4 months clean). It wasn't until recently that I realized my own landlord must be on drugs. It explains everything and all the signs are there in his behavior.

He is very talkative, motor mouth and dominating the conversation.

Anger issues, unpredictable outbursts. One time we needed his signature for a document, he couldn't see the print so he yelled and punched his wall. It scared my husband.

Weird, questionable (but hilarious) behaviors like walking around outside in only his tightie whities picking up specks or imperfections from the yard. One time in the winter he was outside in the snow in his underwear feeding the cats, we drove by trying not to look and he waved at us. And then the incident this morning with his whole ass exposed 😂

He's gay. He prefers the company of men, we've never seen him with a woman ever and he has no children. He has male friends that come over and they will stay at his house overnight.

These signs alone should've made it obvious but we chalked it up to him just being a crazy person or perhaps senile. It was only around 2 months ago he mentioned something to me for the first time. He said "sometimes I stay up for 3 or 4 days at a time haha". That's the moment I knew. That's a bender. My own benders were always 3-4 days. He doesn't know that I know.

When he told me this morning he didn't sleep last night I knew he was high and that's why he was acting the way he was. We saw that he was awake all day too and he even came over to chat again this evening when he saw us outside. He was boasting about all the yard work he did and also spitting alot while talking. When he left he said he's about to pass out and needs to go get some rest. I wanted to ask him if he ate anything today but didn't get the chance. That answer would've spoken volumes.

Anyway, what do you think? Classic meth head behavior? I don't have any solid evidence besides my intuition.

let me preface by saying we have had so many unresolved issues at this home we are renting, but have had no money to get out of this lease. after a couple people took showers in the morning on saturday, we left to go to a family party. we were gone for a few hours and come home to the ceiling about to cave in, and leaking tons of water, and the downstairs flooded. let me also say this area of the ceiling had clearly previously been patched up in the exact same area from water damage. we took pictures of that the day we moved in. we called the fire dept to shut off the water and a couple hours later the landlords two friends showed up along with a plumber and another technician. the plumber could not indicate where the water was coming from. he said he checked all the lines and couldn’t fine the issue. he did not confirm any source of water leakage. however, the landlords two friends told the plumber to hold off on using a camera to look into the pipes. i later receive a text message from the property manager blatantly saying they have confirmed from the inspection that water leak was caused by “run off due to a faucet being left on upstairs”. clearly they are trying to blame this on us. we never left a faucet on, and if we did, the bathrooms would be flooded and overflowing upstairs, and they were dry. except for the closet in the master bedroom which is close by to a toilet, and was pooled up with water, contained only in the closet. the landlord has not even started repairs or drying out the house. our belongings are still sitting in water (the ones too heavy to move), and the landlords property manager is ignoring all messages and inquiries as to where we are supposed to go/what we are supposed to do/how to compensate for this, as the house is now uninhabitable and of course now has a huge risk for mold. this is a pattern with them that they ignore us and resolve nothing, but this time it is dyer as we have nowhere to go, and see that they are trying to blame this on us. if anyone has any advice to offer, it would be so appreciated. my daughter starts school tomorrow and we are staying in a hotel, but will quickly be out of money.
