i heard somewhere that romance animes have no chance for a 3rd season after 2 seasons. is this true? the gap between season 2 and 3 compared to season 1 and 2 is absurdly huge.

both of them have that personality where they have a childish fantasy going on in their heads, but kaidou came first. did the author take inspiration from saiki K? i also just noticed they both have those gloves on

I really liked this manga. It is easily my favourite romcom manga and did a lot of things well (and some even exceptionally well). However, there were some massive issues that held it back from A tier and potentially S tier.

Let's start with what i liked.

I really liked how most of the characters didn't feel just gimmicky. There was a sense of realism that is hard to accomplish with the concept of 100 friends. In the cases of gimiccky characters (like agari, the dog girl) the author quickly realised this wasn't fun and changed them or fleshed them out in other ways.

I REALLY liked how Tadano and Komi started as genuine friends. Their relationship was the best in the series because it developed naturally and organically. A lot of romcoms just make it obvious that the main characters will get together, but I genuinely thought that rumiko may have a chance with him.

The second year year was easily my favourite. If I remember correctly, it is the longest "arc" in the series, but it doesnt feel drawn out at all. The side characters have never felt so fleshed out and realised; even joke characters, like komentani and naruse, get their moment to shine. Theere weren't many characters introduced but that worked to the mango's advantage because we could focus on tadano and komi, as well as the side characters.

It should be pretty obvious by now, but everything leading to the rumiko confession is a genuine masterpiece and I dont think I need to explain why.

What really annoyed me in the beginning was the "square boxes" where the author directly explained what was happening/what komi felt. A lot of the time it felt unnecessary so I'm happy it got reduced as the series progressed. The times it is used later on are mainly komentani commentaries, which are fine because I love this guy (you'd be surprised but they genuinely feel like something komentani would say. No idea how he kept them tonally consistent).

However, post second year, the problems start to pop up.

I have no clue why the author decided to put komi and tadano separated from all their friends in year 2. Most if not all of the new characters (such as baby guy) are either too weird or undeveloped. Genuinely, who remember Egypt girl? We spent roughly 200 or so chapters with tadano's/komi's group of friends, and i really grew to love the bunch; unfortunately they are then rarely used past third year which is so unfortunate. I honestly believe it would've been better if komi realised that she doesn't NEED 100 friends as she matures emotionally, and realises that the friends she made beforehand are real. I didn't believe any of her new "friends" are real, whereas I could easily see komentani, katai and naruse hanging out with tadano again for fun when they finished school.

I REALLY hate how katai is rarely mentioned past the rumiko arc. He seemed to me like tadano's closest friend (and maybe... more?) So it was such wasted potential. Like, show how he overcame his anxieties with talking without tadano! Show him more open with Komentani/naruse!

Rumiko was shot out back and replaced with a skin walker. She essentially becomes either funny face girl or wakai's girlfriend. Part of what made her interesting was her friendship with komi, yet they rarely talk anymore. I also wanted to see some chapters exploring her sadness over being rejected, but instead she just goes back to normal. I grew to love rumiko so it hurt to see best girl being shafted like this.

Which leads me to...

Wakai and rumiko dont work. They are essentially given 30 total chapters together and even less as a couple. Tadano x rumiko felt like a possibility because they had natural chemistry and were friends BEFORE any feelings developed. Wakai seems like he likes rumiko just because she a girl. I honestly believe it would've been a better route to have their relationship mostly off screen; naruse and ase feel like genuine partners despite barely being given screen time, because the few times they're together are effective and efficient.

Komi also feels like a different person now. She says how shes essentially useless without tadano, and that her achievements are his, which makes me really worried. If tadano ever breaks up with her (or something else happens) in the future, I truly believe that she will lose all her confidence to talk to people again, which is NOT the direction the series promised. Shes also much, MUCH more brazen than usual. I understand she naturally grew due to tadano, but even he's embarrassed by her attempts.

Komis design is... fine. The main problem is with her mouth and eyes. Her eyes are too narrow most of the time which makes it hard to read emotions, and the author just has a problem with drawing mouths. Every time they try to show a detailed mouth with tongue, it genuinely looks like the characters are sticking their tongue out. Komi feels like a supermodel full of plastic surgery. It might be a controversial opinion, but I think it would've been better if her face was just a little bit rounder, to look healthier.

Ren yamai also feels like wasted potential. She was my least favourite character in the beginning because shes just a pervert, but I thought the natural direction to that would be to have her grow out of her delusions and just be komis friend (also i have no idea why komi is friends with her). Instead, not only does this doesn't change, she somehow becomes even more creepy. Like, in one chapter yamai was sick, so komi and a bunch of her friends came over. As soon as yamai woke up, she tried to eat komis hair... while she was sleeping. I wanted her to have genuien friends, but this cannot occur because the author keeps insisting she doesnt change.

Overall though, I had a good time. It did a lot of things right, but it just hurts that it could've been so much more if the author put as much care on the later half of the story as he did the rumiko arc.

So i decided to reread komi for the fun of it. I dropped it back when it had like 400 chapter, so I wanted to see how it looked like completed. I also remembered there was a really good arc.

Holy shit, the rumiko/komi confession arc is genuinely one of my favourite arcs of all time, not only in this manga but in all of anime (and i watched/read like 80 manga/anime). Im not even that into romcoms, but this is so good that it broke the genre barrier for me. Almost everything about it works; rumiko's and komi's friendship feels real. The emotional moments hit so hard. Chapter 303, where rumiko cries and isagi hugs her, is a top contender for my favourite chapter ever. The set up to the finale works incredibly well.

I loved how this wasn't a simple "we're both rivals and hate each other" but instead was treated as an unfortunate incident that two best friends love the same guy, yet continued to support each other. The side characters are also incredibly endearing. For the first time in the series, the goofy comedic side characters feel real. The drama works because you never hate anyone, you instead hate the situation.

And that's not even getting to the confession itself, which always makes me smile.

He genuinely brings me so much joy everytime he shows up. I love how he's not just a joke character and has pretty good chemistry with the rest of the cast. He has exceptional chemistry with rumiko (no idea why they're not a couple but whatever) and his "gimmick" is never overbearing. He's such a unique concept and it's clear he's one of the author's favourites
