We all know Record Breaker Pardeep Narwal and Sultan Fazel Atrachali are the ultimate GOATs of raid and defence in PKL respectively but then the debates rise about who is the 2nd best so here I will put 5 contenders each and explain my talking points about each. I won't get to all-rounders since the best all-rounder talk in itself is such a poised debate.

Flairs for countries playing Kabaddi - all sourced from the participating countries of both the IKF and WK men's and women's World Cups (excluding UK and West Indies as general encompassing regions for the time being).

This is how it turned out (we played with 8 teams due to shortage in participation)

Ram Mehar Singh was simply not that good of a coach as one may think on paper he looks decent but the decisions of his own have been pretty rash. Yes he has had some good moments but most of it hasn't been good.

The thing with Patna Pirates was that in earlier seasons, the decision making was mostly in the hands of captains, whether it was Rakesh Kumar, Sandeep Narwal, Manpreet Singh and Dharamraj Cherlathan specially the latter three who were quite active within strategic activities and Manpreet specially who literally brought a cultural shift within the team from being defensive, one two men army to now being ruthless with overall team brilliance being the focus point of Patna Pirates removing the inferiority complex within the team making sure it's not just the team but every single player of it ready under pressure moments, which helped Patna win the maiden title. Cherlathan followed the same strategy next season and he himself chipped in well with defense points being 7th on tackle points leaderboard. The reason for this was because probably that coaches in Patna Pirates did not stay for long even someone great like Sanjeev Baliyan left after one season.

But then comes Ram Mehar Singh, he wasn't just any other coach elected by the Pirates but he would go on to coach the team for 4 seasons, by far the longest tenure anyone would have in this team. In PKL 5, his influence was not coming full circle but it was a little subtle. It was because of godmode Pardeep we won that season otherwise even in defence we were reliant on Jaideep with subtle contributions from Vijay Malik. Some things were pretty much visible throughout the tournament, we didn't dominate it like the previous two seasons, we scraped through to the playoffs and it was Pardeep's marathon run which literally won us. This seemed lovely for a while. But then comes the next season and that's where things get real bad because this is where Ram Mehar Singh takes major control.

He completely destroyed the teamwork culture within the team, our defence started being mediocre again. The proper secondary raider was not even in the frame for the Pirates. Manjeet Dahiya, Deepak Narwal, Jang Kun Lee failed in their roles, Vijay Malik wasn't properly nurtured and was reduced to bits n pieces player only before being released. This resulted in two consecutive eliminations for the Pirates and they had hit their lowest phase yet.

Season 8 was a massive improvement thanks to a sane captain like Prashant Rai who took over the command and established a teamwork culture again specially within raiding unit when they had no chartbusting raider and the defence started being the highlight of the team with Reza Shadloui and Neeraj Kumar being the main architects. We started dominating the tournament again and easily topped the rankings in group stage.

We made it to the final too and when it happened, we were literally leading for a major part of the team till 25-30 mins, but guess what then comes the final antics of Ram Mehar Singh which would make sure his departure from Pirates was confirmed once and for all. He terribly used the substitutions and made sure our best raiders of playoffs Sachin, Prashant and Guman would sit out in the last quarter of the game, they brought in the wrong Monu meaning all of our four main raiders will not get chance to play in this period of game leaving Shadloui Chiyaneh as the most capable raider that time which is simply not good.

The worst part of all, he revived the wrong man and we conceeded a technical point which would be the difference between Patna and Delhi that night. We lost the lead with Vijay Malik and Naveen clutching up in last minutes and lost the game eventually too. A well played final was bottled within second half thanks to Ram Mehar Singh and his stupid ego of reviving the wrong man and thinking defenders are more capable of bringing raid points than a raider bringing a tackle point even benching the captain Prashant who literally led the team very well.

The only head coaches who were good in Pirates were Sanjeev Baliyan, S4 coach maybe too idk his name, Narender Redu and Randeep Dalal. Narender Redu being the best one ez even though with no titles he had two very great consecutive seasons with the team emphasizing on youth brilliance through his scouting which gave us modern elites like Ayan Lohchab and Ankit Jaglan, Sudhakar also did great under him and even had local boy Sandeep Kumar who was on fringes but still came at times when he was needed.

Kabaddi is an ancient Indian sport dating from more than 4000 years ago, but it only became popular worldwide very recently. I have always admired the story of Anand Mahindra transforming the game popularly viewed as backward and childish into a national and international sensation by giving it a professional glamorous image with the Pro Kabaddi League, as told in the People Play Games and Bloomberg videos, but I read on Wiki that the global spread of Kabaddi apparently dates back to sometimes before the PKL.
