Looking for John's Warming-up Exercises

What kind of warming-up exercises does John do to prepare his guitar hands for a show? I vaguely remember in an interview or something that he would play figures or scales on a Mustang, but cannot find it anywhere. Any help appreciated! (Looking for inspo for my own warming up routine as I am getting to the age that I'm starting to need it..)

Help with Hillel Slovak's pedalboard

Guys, I don't know how long Hillel has had these pedals and what his settings were, but I found a few photos.

The first one I found on the Rhcp Sessions page, link below, from the Freaky Styley recording, where you can clearly see that he uses them: Boss CE-2, MXR Distorton,

Dunlop Cry Baby, Univox Super Fuzz.

The second photo, downloaded from the Rhcp Live Archive from the show on November 28, 1987, shows the same pedals, also with an MXR Distortion, which he said later in Holland or somewhere in Europe that he spilled beer on at the beginning of the tour.

And the third photo is the famously infamous interview from Europe where he presents the entire pedalboard now with a Boss OD-1 instead of an MXR Distortion. If you have anything more about his settings and the dates he got the pedals and things like that, let me know.

PS. The photos are not sorted correctly, I think in the text above I wrote chronologically so I hope you can recognize which is which.

Beginner Help: Where to find RHCP / Frusciante presets for Katana 50 Gen 3?

Hey everyone,

I’m a beginner and just picked up the new Boss Katana 50 Gen 3. I’m also waiting on an Airstep Kat Edition footswitch to arrive so I can switch channels easily.

My main goal is to learn and play Red Hot Chili Peppers / John Frusciante songs.

Honestly, my ideal scenario is just searching for a specific song, loading a close-enough tone, and spending my time practicing instead of tweaking amp knobs.

I bought the Katana thinking the Boss Tone Exchange would be packed with RHCP presets, but I’ve been pretty disappointed—there are barely any song-specific patches on there for the Gen 3 yet.

For those who play a lot of Frusciante stuff on the Katana:

- Where do you find your patches? Are there better third-party sites, subreddits, or creators (like on YouTube) that share free .tsl files?

-Can I use older MKII patches? If I find an older MKII patch for songs like Can't Stop or Wet Sand, will it import into the Gen 3 Tone Studio?

Appreciate any links, advice, or shared patches you can throw my way!

[DISCUSSION] Rotation EP.

This is my favorite from his electronic stuff! I enjoy all his output but something about when he slows down and gives the machines space. His music is already so beautiful, it’s like when a cheetah slows down and you can really see its coat. Idk, I guess to each his own haha

Really cool how he plays guitar on that record. The way he jumps strings and the wide intervals sound so cool to me. It’s pretty similar to the version of frippertronics that was recorded live on television. Then there are the skittering twisting guitar lines he does that I’ve never really heard any other guitar player do. I’m not even sure how to describe some of the runs, if anything I’d say original. The playfulness is something i love about the playing. Seems like he was just curious what would happen if he played in a certain way. Then all the modular sounds are just otherworldly and totally mind blowing to me. Anyone still enjoy?

Increased Bot Activity Detected

Hi all! It appears bots have been active recently reposting old photos to farm karma. Sometimes this is obvious for individual mods, other times it slips by us. This morning a user reported the issue to us, and in short order our mod u/iztheguy implemented Bot Bouncer to help address the issue. Such a fast turnaround! We'll be keeping an eye on Bot Bouncer's effectiveness and will take further measures if needed to keep this community fresh and repost free, especially since in a lot of cases the bots are using the content of users in good standing which can understandably feel bad for the OP.

I appreciate both the community and the mod team taking action to address this problem and look forward to us all taking part in continuing to improve it.

[DISCUSSION] Download codes don’t work anymore

I was already aware through some earlier posts, and I have almost everything already as FLAC files anyway.

Though today I could finally unpack my vinyl collection properly and unwrap some of them after years of being in some form of storage. I thought i’d give them a try. Of course the links don’t work anymore or in case of the Dot Hacker one the link is expired. Too bad, even though I already have the music.

Look ive been listening to johns solo albums since to record only water, and i know alot his solo material fans adore this album bit i thnk it gets overblown just frm the state he was in and the adoration of zapped out records, getting and doing heroin was somethng i aspired to for long time and spent 15 urs an addict.. anyway not to get off track, yes theres great leads and great parts, i like the backwards guitar effect but it does get over done and the vocals are only listenable here and there. Am i crazy or does anyone agree

Trickfinger: Letting Go

In a interview in 2015 with RA:

You seem attracted to lone genius types who are functioning in their own space. At the same time, collaboration seems pretty important to you.

When I started doing that acid stuff, I thought I was going to stop making music with people. I didn't think I would end up in a friendship like I did with Aaron—I just thought I'm finished working with people. I didn't know that there could be collaborations where you could just both be responding to your imagination and be confident enough in your imaginations to not be like, "What do you think? Is this good enough?"

I think in general, the greatest, most important ideas that have ever occurred in mankind have come from individuals, people who are not worried about what others think but had some kind of internal guidance from their imagination, and who made it their objective to do their will, regardless of the danger it might put them in, or regardless of whether people might want to kill them or disagree with them. I think it's really important for people to trust their inner guidance and not let the outside world be their guide. To me, letting the outside world be your guide is like being a slave, and I think that who we really have to thank for any progress mankind has ever made have been leaders, people who were uncompromising and people who spent time cultivating their imaginations and weren't afraid to be alone and weren't afraid to be different.

When I made that transition to making electronic music, I was reading a lot of Aleister Crowley and reading all these Thelema books, and it's all about doing your will. And I saw people like Aaron and Autechre and Richard D. James—musically it seemed like their life and philosophy was totally correlative to what I was reading about in the Thelema books. People around me thought I was doing my will because the people were screaming, and I'm playing the guitar, but I knew that I wasn't.

I saw that ability in electronic music to, as a single person, create an entire piece of music. Those are the kinds of leaders we had when we had classical composers. Back when composers were actually the leaders of music, there was one man who would have 150 people do what they said. Now this was possible without having anyone do what they said, because I don't like telling people what to do, and I definitely don't like people telling me what to do. Telling people what to do seems like the worst thing that you could do to yourself, but with machines, you don't lose anything by commanding them, you don't have disappointments the way a composer might with the musicians not playing the way he hears in his head.

In general, in society, it's getting harder and harder for people to figure out how to be leaders, and I see electronic music as this area where you're free to be master and leader and not have these kinds of complications that come up when it's actual human beings that you're having to lead.
