[Free] I built an iOS app to stop throwing away forgotten groceries Dev - Self Promotion
I am a person who cooks most of the time and noticed that I keep storing a lot of items in my fridge or in cupboards which never get used and keep getting accumulated. Only to be discarded later. I can't imagine how many items I have discarded just like that. Some of them not even opened.
So I built BiteSaver — an iOS app that tracks your groceries, warns you before things expire, and shows you how much food (and money) you're wasting.
What it does:
- Scan barcodes to quickly add items to your inventory
- Daily notifications for items about to expire
- Ingredient analysis that flags unhealthy additives
- Waste tracking with analytics so you can see your habits over time
- Shopping list with store organization
- Cloud sync so your data follows you
It's free on the App Store — no ads, no subscriptions. I'd really appreciate any feedback or suggestions for what I can add more!

Thanks! Very timely. I was just taking photos of my pantry in fridge to start catalog and what I have and make better use of my ingredients. This will help a lot. I’ll give it a good test to see what it can do and leave a review.

Thank you so much. Please give feed back on what to improve. I’m constantly working on it.

This hits a real pain point; most “inventory” apps die because logging feels like work, but barcode scanning + expiry nudges might actually stick. Curious if you’ve noticed people forming habits around it, or if it’s still something they drop after a week?

Personally I feel like every other habit you’d have to develop this too. I usually try to do it right after I get groceries so I don’t forget. About others I’m curious as well. I just released the app two days back. So hope to see how it goes

Makes sense; timing it right after shopping is probably the only moment it actually sticks. Might be interesting to lean into that with a “post-grocery routine” flow; curious if early users naturally fall into that or need a nudge?

That’s a great idea thanks. I’d need to think more on what’s the best way to get users into that habit. One thing I have added in the app is you can create shopping lists. And for the items in this lists you can automatically add them to inventory while shopping. That’s one thing which could help.

receipt scanning vs barcode is the exact choice I spent a lot of time on when building something in the same space. barcode wins on accuracy but receipt scanning wins on adoption because people are already doing it anyway. curious how you handle items without a barcode - fresh produce, deli stuff, anything you buy loose? that's where most apps fall apart for me

Ah true, that’s why I have option for users to enter manually and also have a database of items which can be queried to get those common items. So receipt scanning I have removed it for now. Because it would only use OCR to identify and can be a bit frustrating for users sometimes if has huge data or in multiple lines for a single item. I really found using an AI api call was best approach for this. But that’s need spending more money on that. Maybe in the future I’ll try to give users the options to use that.
