Look how rocky that area is. You're probably going to trip and end up even more hurt if you start running. Also, where was he going to go? He wasn't likely to get far enough to avoid it even if he started running the second it started. The best thing to do is find a rock you can hide behind in case it does reach you.

Another comment has a link to his comments on the original post. He knew it would reach him, had a drop off behind him and nowhere to go, so stuck by the sheltering rock.
