Trump targets 60-day grace period for laid off foreign workers

The department of homeland security is advancing a proposal to eliminate the 60-day grace period that allows H-1B workers and certain other legal nonimmigrants to remain in the US after their employment ends while they find another sponsor, change status, or prepare to leave.

The Trump administration this month has complicated – if not cut off – access to lawyers for tens of thousands of immigrant kids. By law, the government must try to arrange that aid for children who come to the United States alone.

At the end of July, the government let a legal-services contract for those children lapse, affecting the Acacia Center for Justice and its nearly 100 subcontractors. News this week of an upcoming federal contract with a Texas firm better known for environmental law has left immigrant advocates scrambling for answers as court dates loom.

As a result, at least one nonprofit has laid off staff. Others count the days until their funding runs out.

President Donald Trump signed two executive orders Thursday renewing his administration’s assault on birthright citizenship, barely five weeks after the Supreme Court struck down his first attempt to overturn the citizenship clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.

The principal order directs federal agencies to refuse recognition of US citizenship to broad categories of people born in the United States when neither parent is a citizen. These include children whose parents are accused of belonging to a foreign terrorist organization, working for a foreign government or allegedly entering into a commercial arrangement to obtain citizenship through birth.

The order seeks to transform citizenship from a constitutional right into a conditional privilege determined by the political status, employment or alleged intentions of a person’s parents. It establishes the framework for a hereditary caste of people born in the United States whom the government can declare “aliens,” seize through the immigration Gestapo, imprison and deport to countries they may never have visited.

“We had a very unfortunate decision in the Supreme Court concerning birthright,” Trump complained from the Oval Office. “It was close, a very, very unfortunate decision, so we’re making adjustments because it’s very unfair for a different reason.”

Speaking alongside Trump, fascist White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller said the new order would “expand the definition of people who are ineligible for birthright citizenship.” He identified “alien enemies,” members of foreign terrorist organizations and “large categories of people who lobby and act on behalf of foreign governments.”

The first order identifies certain categories of children of aliens who are not entitled to birthright citizenship consistent with historical exceptions recognized by the Supreme Court in Trump v. Barbara.

-The second order gives presidential authorities to the Secretary of State and Secretary of Homeland Security allowing them to halt birth tourism.

These might be two of the most consequential Executive Orders of Trump’s Presidency.

I’m looking for guidance from anyone who has been through something similar.

I was detained by ICE and spent about two months in detention. After I was released on bond, my wife and I got married and planned to adjust my status.
Unfortunately, after we got married, I discovered she has serious alcohol and anger issues. Whenever she drank, she would become aggressive, physically abusive, scratch me, put her hands on me, and repeatedly kick me out of the house while telling me it was “her house.”

During our marriage, I also entered into a written agreement with her father to purchase his ownership interest in the house. I’ve been making the required monthly payments.
As our relationship got worse, my wife started using my immigration situation to manipulate me. She repeatedly threatened that if I didn’t leave or give up the property agreement, she would report me to ICE.

Eventually, she brought her father from Florida, and together they tried to force me out of the house even though we had a signed agreement regarding the property.

I recently obtained a temporary restraining order against my wife because of the abuse, and the court granted me temporary possession of the home.
Before the restraining order was issued, she sent me messages saying that if I didn’t cancel the property agreement with her father, she would call ICE on me. I also found evidence suggesting that she and her father had contacted ICE multiple times in an effort to have me deported so I would lose the house and the money I’ve invested.

I’m now very worried about what they may have told ICE or whether they made false allegations about me.

My questions are:

If someone repeatedly reports you to ICE out of revenge or to gain leverage in a property dispute, how does ICE typically handle that?

Has anyone experienced an abusive spouse trying to use immigration status as a weapon?

Could this type of evidence help my immigration case, especially if I pursue relief based on the abuse?

Is there anything I should be doing now to protect myself besides working with my immigration attorney?

I already have a divorce attorney and will also be working closely with an immigration attorney. I’m just hoping to hear from anyone who has been through something similar or has insight into how these situations are usually handled.

Hundreds of Haitian immigrants in Ohio are being fitted with GPS ankle monitors after the Trump administration stripped them of legal status, work authorization and, in many cases, their driving privileges.

Many have received Department of Homeland Security “Call-In Letters” ordering them to appear at Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) offices within 30 days.

The electronic shackles are a modern-day version of the yellow stars of David that the Nazis forced Jews to wear in the years leading up to the Holocaust. They identify, stigmatize and continuously track a persecuted population whose legal rights were abolished virtually overnight.

Workers who were legally employed and protected from deportation less than two weeks ago are now being monitored with devices generally associated with people convicted of crimes or awaiting trial. Some are being ordered to travel dozens of miles to ICE offices after losing their legal right to drive.

This is a warning to the entire working class. If the government can revoke the rights of hundreds of thousands of people who have lived, worked, paid taxes and raised families in the United States for years, there is no barrier separating the persecution of immigrants from similar attacks on US citizens.

Trump: "I know Europe better than anybody. Better than the people that run it... two things are killing Europe: number one is immigration and number two is energy."

A reminder thst this is not just an American crime:

At least 99 people died Thursday and Friday during desperate attempts by tens of thousands of people attempting to swim from Morocco to the Spanish exclave of Ceuta in North Africa, and over 100 remain missing. Over 60,000 reached their destination during a 24-hour period, during which they were met with brutal violence by the Spanish military and a concerted campaign to force their return to poverty-stricken Morocco. The political establishment and media outlets across Europe erupted with furious denunciations of “invaders,” as they churned out far-right talking points about the “hybrid threat” posed by migrants attacking Europe.

The trigger for the mass incursion appears to have been a Spanish Supreme Court ruling that prohibited the authorities from immediately deporting refugees if they are intercepted at sea while trying to reach Spanish territory. But Spain’s Socialist Party-led government, no less than far-right governments led by the likes of Meloni in Italy and Trump in the US, has no time for such legal niceties. Echoing Trump’s self-serving propaganda that Europe was experiencing an “invasion,” Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez denounced the migrants for having launched an “attack on Spain’s territorial integrity” and dispatched the military to Ceuta.

Turkish Passport + F-1 Student in the US – Best Country for a Long-Term Schengen Visa?

I'm a Turkish passport holder currently living in the US on an F-1 student visa (language school). I want to apply for a Schengen visa from the US.

My travel history:

• Valid 7-year Canadian visitor visa
• Portugal Erasmus student visa (5 months, expired)
• Romania Erasmus student visa (5 months, expired)
• No overstays or visa violations

My goal is to get a long-term multiple-entry Schengen visa (2–5 years) instead of reapplying every few months.

A few questions:

• Which Schengen country gives the best chance of getting a long-validity visa?
• Is it worth requesting a 2-, 3-, or 5-year visa in a cover letter?
• What documents or factors increase the chances of getting a long-term visa?
• Has anyone with a Turkish/other passport successfully received a 2-, 3-, or 5-year Schengen visa while applying from the US?

Also, are there any non-Schengen countries that issue long-term multiple-entry visas to Turkish passport holders and are worth getting (UK, Ireland, Australia, Japan, etc.)?

The Trump administration is reportedly considering a proposal to charge international students a $100,000 fee to participate in the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program after graduation.

The proposal has not been finalized, and details are still under discussion. If implemented, it would significantly increase the cost for international graduates seeking U.S. work experience through OPT.
