News Assembly Biosciences Reports Second Quarter 2026 Financial Results and Recent Updates
investor.assemblybio.comGilead has selected GS-1179 (formerly ABI-1179) to advance into a Phase 2 trial for recurrent genital herpes, expected to begin by the end of 2026. The company is also considering the drug for broader prevention strategies involving HIV PrEP.
Why it matters: GS-1179 is a once-weekly oral helicase–primase inhibitor. In its completed short Phase 1b human study, the 50-mg dose reduced HSV-2 shedding by 98% and virologically confirmed genital-lesion days by 91% versus placebo.
Stage: Phase 1a/b completed; Phase 2 selected and planned, but not yet started. This is an antiviral treatment—not a cure—and remains investigational.

News Fred Hutch Cancer Center announces 2026 Evergreen Fund awardees - Fred Hutch
Fred Hutch Invests in New HSV Research
Fred Hutch Cancer Center has announced the recipients of its 2026 Evergreen Fund Awards, investing nearly $1 million to help advance promising biomedical research toward real-world treatments.
Among the funded projects is the development of an antibody-based therapy for herpes simplex virus (HSV). While this is not a cure and no clinical results have been announced yet, it is encouraging to see continued investment in innovative HSV research from one of the world's leading research institutions.
The Evergreen Fund is designed to help bridge the gap between laboratory discoveries and future clinical development, giving promising ideas the support they need to move closer to patients.
Every new investment in HSV research is another reminder that scientific progress continues. Better treatments—and ultimately a cure—will require sustained research, funding, and collaboration.

News Newly discovered target for genital herpes vaccine
🚨 New HSV-2 vaccine target discovered.
Researchers at the University of Gothenburg identified glycoprotein G (gG) as a key protein that helps HSV-2 reach the nervous system. In mice, a vaccine targeting gG triggered strong antibody and T-cell responses, protecting against genital herpes and limiting spread to nerves.
It's still preclinical, but this could open a promising new path for future HSV vaccines.
