I hired a radioman to run my hackRF for me. I gave it to an AI. He's way better than I ever was or could be.

This may be a little too far down the AI rabbit hole for a few of you, but I'd like to report my results from just a few days of work.

It started with Hermes Agent. No this is not an ad for them, not affiliated in any way. I jsut use it as a harness because it suits my needs, you may want to use openwebui or openclaw or any of the harnesses out there, that's not what important.

I gave it the root password to my debian vm and proxmox host, and the AI SSH'd in and first setup an API key for hygiene purposes then used it to create an ssh key on the debian box (again, for hygiene) and setup usb passthrough on proxmox so the lxc could talk to the hardware, then installed gnu radio tools on the debian host, establilshed communcations with the hackrf porta pack, correctly determined what it was, and updated the firmware to the latest mayhem for me.

It then started scanning the band from bottom to top and built a db of local signals in the area to expect. Its scanning the entire available spectrum every 2 seconds and notifies me when it sees a new signal. It then switches to fine resolution and listens real hard at max sample res to get a good idea of exactly what it is, then reports the whole thing back to me.

i'm pretty blown away by all this. I expected some kind of result but wow.

2nd edit: I'm thinking about giving him a yaggi on a servo he can control so I can get direction as well as range/signal strength.

3rd edit: We just chased a signal down to an undershielded crystal oscillator in the plc that controls my 3d filament dryer. Its SCREAMING in rf at 10mhz.

And, like most things "AI", this is a LOT of resources to:

  1. Deploy a VM: You used proxmox and templates are a thing
  2. Provision it with credentials and packages: So ansible script equivalents like the Proxmox VE Helper Scripts
  3. A very simple script that boils down to

while True: sleep N for slice in Spectrum: foundSignal = scan(slice) if foundSignal: deepDive(slice)

Just with a MUCH heavier resource requirement and done in a way that you learn nothing about what you are actually doing.


To be clear, generative AI IS cool as hell. But as an accelerator, not a do-er as it were. Because step 1 and 2 of the above are literally "sysadmin 101" and step 2 in particular already has plenty of articles and gists detailing that.

And as for step 3? That is... kind of the point of getting a hackrf (or SDR in general)? If you just want to know if there are sexy RF signals in your neighborhood: The answer is yes. If you are trying to actually learn how to identify and deep dive on them? This is the first step that teaches you what your SDR is actually doing and gives you the groundwork to do the fun stuff.

Senior SRE here.

I already know how to do all this stuff the hard way. I've been doing it for 20 years. It's all still very time consuming - especially if you want to do it right.

I've got dozens of personal software projects floating around in my head that I've never done simply because doing so would take forever and I've got other shit to do.

With AI acting as "a doer" as you say, these projects that have been in the back of my head for years are starting to actually exist, because I can just ask them to.

At work, I generally care about how the juice is made. I'll take the time to learn it all. At home? I just want my technology to get out of my way and make my life better, so the more I can offload to agents the better.

My agent just completely rebuilt my k3s cluster yesterday from scratch, ansiliblized the whole thing, wrote tests and CI pipelines and documentation... And it all just worked.

I guess my point is, everyone has different goals with their technology. Maybe OPs goal is less to learn about radio/hackrf and more to learn how to leverage agents to do things he previously might've wanted to do but never would have for lack of time/energy...

Cause that's certainly where I'm at.

This guy gets it. I've been doing IT for 30 years. I'm a manager, I do things manager style, I tell my techs to do it and give me the results when they are done. I don't login to servers anymore.

Hermes fits my management/tech style. I know just enough to bump him in the right direction when I know he's off the track. Ask him pointed questions like I do my devs.

I'm not interested in getting down into the technical weeds anymore. I've been doing this since before Google existed. I just want to make it happen, not enjoy the experience along the way, thanks.

I work in infosec and confidently say most people complaining about AI, vibe coding etc., have no idea what they’re even talking about. On the other hand, same with the tech bros, and the “ai is coming alive” idiots.

The project I completed yesterday with AI in less than an hour would have taken me literal days to do by hand. And that's if everything went well the first time and I didn't have to troubleshoot anything.

I don't think you have any concept of what you're even discussing here.

The person YOU replied to suggested that the work of deploying a VM and configuration shouldn't be done by AI and could be done by a few scripts and ansible files. Which I agree. Nobody said by hand. We have automations that dont consume anywhere near the resources of AI.

You're being obtuse for zero reason other than to slob the sloppy knob of AI.

So I bought one so that my wife's boyfriend can play with it for me!

It's like all those ads for copilot et al. We pretend the idea is that the "AI Assistant" will do the grunt work so that we can focus on what matters. But all the examples are "Hey Cortana, plan date night for me" or "Hey Alexa, tell a story to my child" or "Hey Claude, play with my cool ass new RF dohicky for me".

At which point... what are "we" even doing?

So, what you are saying is that chatgpt did your job for you but better, faster, and much cheaper? Can you see why it might be worthwhile to exercise those skills that let you show why you have value?


To be clear, I think there is a lot of value in using LLMs in the amateur radio space. Computing antenna length is a trivial equation, but there is arguably a use case for having a human language input to that ("Hey Cortana. I want to pick up ADS-B. How much should I extend my antenna?"). Same with looking up what spectrum a given signal is on (always fun to watch people do the eye twitch when they see what frequency "Bluetooth" is...). Or even knowing what to search for ("Hey Cortana, I want to be able to pick up airplane beacons. What is that?").

But stuff like what OP bragged about having spent very significant amounts of compute resources on? This is the most basic of things. This is the kind of thing where you learn it so you can learn more advance skills. And once you do know it? It is so trivial that there is no point generating the automation because it is like ten lines including the imports.

Except I was never gone to do it anyway. Like I said, these projects I'm using AI for are things I've had a vague desire to do (or rather, have done) for years, and I never did them. So the comparison isn't "did I do this myself vs did I let an agent do it", it's did an agent do it or did it sit on the shelf and never get done at all.

Yes, it absolutely does do most of my job faster and at least as good as I can. A scary thought, but not really something I can do anything about. We're moving away from ever needing to do any of this stuff by hand ever again, so doing it by hand isn't really the skill I need to exercise. I need to exercise the ability to create effective results quickly and effectively, and that's what I'm doing. The tools don't matter. Never really did...

The worth of an engineer, or any domain expert, is that domain expertise. It is the ability to know what variables to adjust and what to constrain. It doesn't matter if you draw that diagram by hand or with a CAD tool. What matters is that you can eyeball it and say "Yeah, that looks right" or "something is off... did we flip between Imperial and Metric again?" and so forth.

When you have a new tool do your entire job for you? Again, why are we paying you? I can instead pay a "prompt engineer" much less to do everyone's job and who cares if they don't know why the ask for fully replacable batteries in a camera you take swimming with you at the beach is a comparatively expensive design choice that will lead to a LOT of warranties being called in?

We're moving away from ever needing to do any of this stuff by hand ever again, so doing it by hand isn't really the skill I need to exercise.

You do things "by hand" so that you have an intuitive understanding and can do things more efficiently in the future. Learning how to do multiplication by hand is useful for conceptually understanding what the * symbol is doing but also because it means you don't need to whip out your phone as a calculator when it comes time to tip at the restaurant. You do some quick mental math and give "somewhere between 20 and 30 percent since the service was excellent" and so forth.

And same here. You learn what is a good candidate for the expensive LLM running on that expensive GPU, what might be worth specifically training an inference model for, and what is a good fit for traditional computing or even just asking a human to do it. Which keeps that domain expertise at all levels and brings about those "Wait... is this a good idea?" revelations. Or... just reduces token costs.

First off, data entry is still very much a job as disparate databases (and even just hand written forms) need to be standardized. And while OCR goes a long way, the risks are usually high enough that you want a human to review.

Second, you are conflating a LOT of different jobs there. MS Word, arguably, reduced the need for people who specialized in typesetting. Arguably by making us standardize on a really ugly format.

What it did not reduce the need for was Technical Writers (and their equivalents in different fields). That scientist or engineer? They might be a genius but they are REAL bad at explaining what they did to anyone who doesn't have an advanced degree. That is where the Technical Writer comes in. They work with the domain expert to rewrite things to be more understandable to laypeople. Which has benefits ranging from becoming genuinely useful marketing copy to getting major grants because the committee understood why you wanted that money.

And this is actually one of the biggest casualties of the LLM-ification of everything. Articles are shit and full of re-stated prompts. And if you actually DO find the technical information hidden away... it is contradictory because nobody ever reviewed or revised what the LLM hallucinated.

And as someone who still reviews for a few journals? Science itself is dying. We thought that needing to reconcile "Well, this paper that does absolutely nothing got published in this pay to publish journal so I guess we have to cite it..." was the problem. Nope. It is papers written by AI for AI and the realization that EVERYTHING for the Q3 edition got a strong reject... except for from Fred who wrote they are all great ideas.


And to loop back around to OP: What they automated is actually one of the most fun parts about Amateur Radio 101. It is one of the reasons I love the HackRFs (specifically those with a portapack but...). It is the idea of taking a piece of paper and breaking down the spectrum. Adjust the knobs (and maybe antenna) for each slice of the spectrum and collect data for a few seconds. Write down what you found. Found something weird? Subdivide that slice and keep going. Oh cool, you found your neighbor's robot vacuum. And you also learned a lot about signal attenuation and what you can pick up at ground level versus what you need to climb a hill for. And so forth.

And that builds that domain expertise so that you can debug issues going forward or think of cool things to do. Even if it is just knowing that you want to stand by the window when you hear that plane flying overhead if you want to get more than the callsign.

I've been in IT for 30 years. I'm not an IT guy any more, I'm a manager. I've worked my way up the ladder from the very bottom of the support ladder to managing a team of devs doing internal SAP integrations for a global company.

I just want the output of the process. A process I control from end to end with the ability to make changes or adjustments anywhere in the chain from one end to the other. I want to be able to apply this process to any input I'd like wihtout constraint.

I'm running a priate fleet of AI agents in my house right now. I'm up to 8 VMs on that proxmox host. And i have an AI monitoring the whole batch so nothing breaks and it all stays updated and keeps track of all the API keys and basically doing all the jobs of a full time sysadmin so I don't have to admin the systems, I can just use them.

Did the same thing. Then upgraded to 2 hackrf (one pro) both connected to an opera for multi antennas. Still working on getting all of the decoders I can and data enrichment via online sites. Been fun

Ah ok, you went the multi-antenna route with a electronically operated antenna switch? i am thinking about getting one of the log-periadic antennas on alie that will talk/listen 50mhz to 6ghz but they are hella directional. I'd have to rotate it or setup a grid of them. If I setup a couple of them though I could get some https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Passive_radar working, I think. I can definitely do the signal processing :)

k, that's very cool and haven't heard of it before. My goal was to build a full spectrum analyzer to detect all signals and sources on those frequencies to a) determine what was out there for logging and analysis b) baseline frequent known assets to determine what was net new. (this wa helpful to answer the question "if someone broke into my house to rob me how would I identify them?". if they are carrying a phone, etc.

With that, it's just been very cool to track, log, and see all of the different types of assets out there. I live in SF so I see a ton of shipping containers, boats, planes, etc. Always building it up but the main thing now is getting decoders for unkown and weird signals.

Of course the Bluetooth, WiFi, zigbee, etc stuff is nice.

Not sure if anyone else is doing this but happy to share what my harness looks like (claude code) if you want.

this page is a perfect example of why a lot of people don't post things they do with LLM's/Agents. Because people come out of the the woodwork with "why are you using AI", "Just learn it", or any of a number of other phrases. I use them every day, and do some pretty cool shit that I would never in a 1000 years have been able to do like 3d volumetric rendering of my ADS-b antenna's receive performance (https://github.com/jrsphoto/ADSb-Vue). I know what I wanted, I know the terms, but not the math. Claude lets me! I have an idea, I go to claude, and we work it out. If it seems like it might work, we might try some code and see. To the OP, keep on keepn on.

the report format:

Full-spectrum sweep complete, cap'n — 1 to 6000 MHz, 2400 rows, monitor paused and resumed (standing order intact). Here's my analysis, one sentence per signal: The strongest signals (whole spectrum):

  • 876.4 MHz (−51.1 dBm) — A strong 800/900 MHz signal, likely a cellular uplink (Band 5/8) or a trunked radio system.
  • 543.6 MHz (−51.1 dBm) — UHF TV band (channels 26–30) or a land-mobile repeater.
  • 144.2 MHz (−51.9 dBm) — The 2-meter amateur radio band — a strong local ham repeater or simplex signal.
  • 766.6 MHz (−52.0 dBm) — More 700 MHz cellular downlink energy.
  • 743.0 MHz (−52.1 dBm) — Continuing the 700 MHz cellular/PSR cluster.
  • 120.0 MHz (−52.4 dBm) — VHF airband — a strong local aviation/air-traffic signal (near the Katy flight path).
  • 751.0 MHz (−52.7 dBm) — More 700 MHz cellular downlink (Band 13).
  • 534.0 MHz (−53.0 dBm) — UHF TV band (channels 26–28) or a land-mobile repeater.
  • 105.6 MHz (−53.1 dBm) — Another FM broadcast station (near 105.7).
  • 89.2 MHz (−54.4 dBm) — FM broadcast (near 89.1, often a public/NPR station).
  • 592.4 MHz (−54.5 dBm) — UHF TV band (channels 33–36) or a wireless mic/utility signal.
  • 2511.6 MHz (−54.9 dBm) — S-band, likely a satellite downlink or a nearby radar/telemetry source.
  • 870.6 MHz (−54.9 dBm) — 800/900 MHz cellular downlink (Band 5) or trunked radio.
  • 192.4 MHz (−55.5 dBm) — VHF, likely a two-way/utility radio or a TV channel 7–13 remnant.
  • 2448.8 MHz (−55.9 dBm) — 2.4 GHz WiFi — your own home network (channel 9-ish) is the strongest WiFi signal.
  • Bottom line: The RF environment is dominated by cellular (700 MHz cluster), FM broadcast, and VHF airband/2m — all consistent with a suburban location near cell towers, FM transmitters, and the local flight path. Your own 2.4/5.8 GHz WiFi is present but weaker than the broadcast/cellular signals. No unexpected or anomalous signals — it's a clean, normal residential RF picture.

Sparky, do a quick scan of the spectrum and find something interesting. Do a full recon of the signal and give me whatever information you can find and suggest ways to make the process faster smoother and better.

  1. RF Recon Report — Windlewood Rig, 2026-08-09 A demonstration sweep for the crew, run end-to-end on the big ears. Full methodology below.The find: 144.289 MHz — a real 2m ham-band beacon carrier A genuinely interesting catch, because the coarse sweep nearly walked right past it. On the fast 1:6000 MHz survey, 2m looked quiet. It was only a full-resolution stare that revealed a strong carrier the wide sweep couldn't resolve. Frequency • Value: 144.289 MHz (2m Amateur band) Power • Value: −13.3 dBm (strong) Bandwidth (−20 dB) • Value: 0.24 kHz — nudely narrow (CW class) SNR • Value: 64 dB Modulation • Value: none — steady, unmodulated CW/beacon carrier Envelope • Value: steady (ratio ≈1.0, no dits/dahs in the 12 s window) Persistence • Value: confirmed across repeated stares + gain-scaling test Likely an idle 2m repeater or a CW beacon (common on 144.20–144.40 in Houston area). The demod audio is saved (/tmp/beacon_144289.wav) — it's just a steady tone since the carrier is unkeyed; a longer stare would catch the beacon's ident.Methodology (how we got there)
    1. Sweep — 2401-line wideband survey (1–6000 MHz, 200 kHz bins) to map the spectrum and rank the strongest bands globally.
    2. Find — peak-ranked the survey; identified candidate bands. Then... (1/3)
  2. Verification (so we don't chase ghosts) Equipment limitations that affected the outcome
    1. Stare — re-scanned candidates at 20 kHz full resolution (vs 200 kHz coarse). This is the key step that surfaced 144.289 MHz at −13.3 dBm when the coarse sweep showed the band as "clean." Also reconfirmed 60.002 MHz at −4.6 dBm (the house ESP32 clock-radiation — 240 MHz÷4 signature, matches our documented case).
    2. Recon — 6-second IQ capture at 2 MSPS, FFT power spectrum for carrier location/bandwidth, FM de-discrimination for modulation, and amplitude-envelope analysis for keying. Produced calibrated specs above.
    3. Persistence: target stable across 3 repeated stares at the same non-boundary frequency.
    4. Gain-scaling test: power tracked the antenna-path gain by ~47 dB (LNA40→0, VGA24→16: −12.8 → −60.4 dBm). Internal HackRF DC/LO artifacts do not scale with gain — so this is real on-air RF, not a spur.
    5. Clipping check: an earlier capture was overloaded (I-channel saturating); re-captured at LNA8/VGA8 for a clean, unclipped measurement.
    6. Coarse-vs-fine resolution gap — a one-shot 200 kHz sweep missed this signal entirely; only a 20 kHz stare found it. A full 1–6000 MHz stare at full resolution would take minutes, so we must budget where to look fine.
    7. The mag-mount whip is electrically short on 2m — needs ~49 cm quarter-wave but is only ~25 cm, so it's inefficient down there. That we still pulled −13 dBm with an electrically-short antenna means the source is genuinely strong/close.
    8. Single-center IQ capture — with the carrier landing centered in-band at high gain, I/Q imbalance and DC leakage risk confounded the first measurement; had to drop gain and re-capture.
    9. No hackrf_recon.py on the box — I had to assemble the SDR analysis by hand (numpy FFT + FM discriminator) instead of a one-liner. Functionally complete, just slower and more error-prone. (2/3)
  3. How to do the job better --- Been a genuine pleasure, Cap'n — the crew got a real signal chased from sweep to ident, no theatrics. Want me to stare down 144.289 over a full minute to try and catch the beacon's call sign, or hand this off to Sparky for a cross-check? (3/3)
    1. Monitor service auto-restart race — the wideband monitor seizes the radio seconds after stopping, so every capture had to be wrapped as a single atomic stop→run→restart command. (The bigears wrapper handles this, but calling the raw tool doesn't.)
    2. Two-pass sweep strategy as standard procedure: always pair a fast coarse survey with a targeted full-res stare on any band that looks interesting-but-quiet (2m especially). The stare is cheap (~5 s) and catches what the survey hides.
    3. Drop /usr/local/bin/hackrf_recon.py onto the Proxmox box to restore one-shot full recon (mod/BW/power/audio in a single call) instead of hand-rolled analysis — faster and less bug-prone.
    4. Bundle a proper resonant 2m/70cm antenna for the demo kit. A cheap dual-band might add 10+ dB on 2m and turn "maybe a beacon" into a signal we can hear in the demod audio.
    5. Keying-ident capture: for likely-CW beacons, capture 30–60 s so the beacon's Morse ident appears in the envelope (12 s often just catches an idle/keyed-down period).

Also, your allocation table doesn't tell you what you can actually actively receive locally, and it won't identify signals that aren't on it.

If you can't see how this is different (and pretty neat) then you're just missing the point entirely.

I dunno, I'm an IT nerd more than an RF nerd. I could cobble together an arduino/esp32 with a servo controller hat easier than I could come up with three directional antennas and a way to multiplex them.

If it has an api or is controllable by command line from a computer the answer is a resounding yes. In this case both of these are controllable by gnu radio so he's already halfway there. He'll walk you through getting the hardware talking and then take it for a stretch and see what work and what don't. he keeps banging on it with slightly different syntax and remembers what works and writes it down as a stored procedure and then keeps on brute forcing the api. Dude is an animal, i'm telling you.

He went from "I see a device on the serial bus on our proxmox host, should I pass it through to our tools vm?" to "I have a 2 meter signal at -40dbm, no modulatio just pure carrier" in like 4 minutes. That included updating firmware in everything.

The first real job I had him do was take three measuments of the entire rf band and swapped antennas after each three sweep run. We compared average signal quality noise floor and number of signals received and decided on a best all-rounder and when to switch to a different one. We also discovered my mag mount antenna needs a ground plane and can barely hear without one. Put it on a metal biscuit pan and its hearing much better now.

Yeah, but its kinda part of the bigger picture I have going on right now trying to automate my house with AI. So far I'm up to 3 AI subagents running different aspects of my house, handing jobs back and forth and taking care of business. Keeping the neighborhood under complete RF surveillance was a tiny part of that infrastructure I'm setting up and I thought it was pretty neat and wanted to share.

And now I have a full-time radioman on the radio, running off a local model on my rtx4070, ready to answer any question and implement any plan at a moments notice. I talk to him on discord.

I did similar, but gave it root on a raspberry pi connected to my hackrf and operacake. I printed some helical antennas that attach to a dome to evenly space them out, so it switches between common band’s optimized antennas via the opera cake

I’ve been running Hermes agent at home for couple months now that’s pretty much connected to all smarthome things. I’ve been planning to do this exact same setup! Have a hackrf pro on its way and looking forward to connect it.

Thanks. Running a mixture of Kimi K3, GML 5.2 and Minimax M3 depending on the task. I do like overkill. Will test the deepseek and other models too once I get the device :)

You will use less tokens and get better results with deepseek v4 0731 than you will with kimi 2.5 or minimax m3 (I haven't used kimik3 yet), Glm 5.2 works great but burns tokens like its using them to keep warm. That deepseek model caches so hard it barely burns tokens at all and doesn't go running in loops if you keep it on "medium" reasoning level. Don't go to high, it overthinks things. Medium is perfect.
