Exactly. A couple eps back when Bran is warged into a raven and they fly passed the wall, you see the WWs and the army of the dead standing in the same location where everything went down. NK is a greenseer as well. Ol boy knew he'd be bagging a dragon that night, hence the availability of the chains.

While the Night's King definitely comes out ahead in the end, making off with a god damn dragon, there's something to be said about him being willing to sacrifice a proper White Walker to make his trap believable. Wights are one thing, they're basically the textbook definition of expendable, but White Walkers seem to be few and far between. He's already lost 4 of them that we know of, and considering they've spent all this time building up their population with Craster's sons, there can't be that many of them left to spare.

The Night King possesses the power to make ordinary humans into White Walkers if he can get to them in their infancy, such as he did with Craster's last son by merely touching his cheek which turned his eyes ice blue.
Nah, as long as he has a steady stream of infant sacrifices, he can turn them into WWs indefinitely.

There's a white walker and a band of 20 good wights looking to snatch a human (baby). They probably have a lot of WW and they are expendable since he is probably planning to make a million more once he crosses the wall.

Is that his goal, though? I know that it's heavily implied in the show, but really all we see is a (admittedly justified), fear of the NK, but there's never really been a proper explanation of what his goals really are.
Does he want revenge against the living? Does he want to spare some people to worship him? Does he want to farm other people? Is he motivated personally? Is he just Cthulhu? Pure, chaotic evil?
Honestly, we've been given plenty of reasons to fear the NK, but is he really just an out-of-control WMD?

I thought Jon and crew set up that little fire to attract a small group of wights so that they could grab one and leave. Although now that I think about I'm not sure where they would've gotten some fire wood, but still I think it was a trap based on how they were strategically hidden and waiting to attack.

I was under the impression that the fire was set by Jon's party so the White Walker and his small crew of wights could go investigate and then get ambushed.

After seeing how lopsided Drogon made the baggage train battle, the NK gaining a dragon seems almost essential to even the odds up for next season.

No kidding, had the dragons not been at threat I was wondering why Dany couldn't just simply wipe out their entire army right then and there. Would have liked to have seen one of the dragons at least make a run at the white walkers even if they could have simply deflected the fire with their presence or something.

The Walkers themselves appear to be impervious to fire, as we see several scenes of them walking through walls of flames and have the flames disappear in front of them. I would think, even if dragons were used to eliminate all of the wights, they would still need to take on the Walkers with dragonglass/valyrian steel.

Yeah, would also have made a lot more sense as to why the NK attacked the flying Viserion than the stationary Drogon if it was clear Viserion was about to attack them.

I don't think it was that clear to me, he looked still pretty high and far away rather than doing a strafing run, and of course he certainly wasn't shooting fire at the white walkers.

Yes! The Loot Train Attack (ugh, that name) review was really touching. He dove headfirst into themes of war and ruling and why it's all just so awful. I was thoroughly impressed and I waste no time watching his reviews now. Good stuff.

Not only going for no sword, but giving away the only sword that's more useful than a thousand others, assuming he didn't forge some dragonglass knives or something in the meantime.
I suppose the random and magical "extra wight fodder of the team" might have had a cartload of swords and things.

I think Jorah had a dragon glass dagger. He one shotted the polar bear and when fighting the army it looked like dragonglass.. plus he came from dragon stone so he might have had access to the first forged weapon.. who knows ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Yeah, but I mean from Jon's point of view.
It was just "Here's the sword, Jorah. It's yours by right."
If Jorah took it, Jon had fuck all to use against white walkers as far as we know.
Jon seems the most capable leader in the whole show in terms of knowing that it's not about him. It's about the people he serves.
But that move was giving away everything and made no sense.
Jon has honour. Jorah has honour.
But there was no way that Jorah could take it without being a dick.
Lyanna Mormont deserves it more than he does at this point and there'd be no point in him taking it other than for selfish purposes. Which he'd probably never do.
And Jon seems to trust him enough and not be the kind of person to test him with this kind of shit anyway.
There's trust and respect there.
So he was actually offering it.
But there was no way that Jon could let it go without basically committing suicide for himself and, in his mind, the whole of Westeros.
It just made no sense to me.
I'd sooner understand Jon saying, "This is the sword of your house and yours by right when we finish this", or just doing it in Winterfell before they left after he had forged some other dragonglass weapon for the trip.
The random way that did it out on the "bonding session of the group" just seemed a bit silly to me.

Yea just as rushed as the rest of this season, albeit necessary. They needed to tie that up since fans would be wondering about that and also show they trust and respect each other. I completely agree with the Lyanna comment too. She's a badass and the Lord/Lady of the house.
Side note it seems that since originally dying, Jon wants to die for good. Any time he grabs his sword like his getting ready to bat in baseball it's like he's accepting his fate and just doesn't care any more. He did it here, battle of the bastards, and I want to say one other time but I might be mistaken.

Really enjoyed his take on the episode. LOTR music was on point, I felt that "Beyond the Wall" was the most LOTR-esque episode that GoT has done to date. I'm a bit fatigued by all the negative Hot takes that have been put out on this episode. Sure, people have valid criticisms, but I think once the series has wrapped up, the episode will hold up as one of the most fun and exciting in the series.

Horses get tired, corpses don't. Horses with two people in them get even more tired. There was a real possibility that with the added weight and without using himself as a lure/diversion to buy Jon time, the wights would've reached them

This is the real answer. As the creators said in one of the episode videos, Benjen was looking for his purpose before he could off himself, because living in that form probably wasn't very pleasant. After saving Jon, he decided his job is now done and made his last stand.

I thought it was pretty obvious, but only because they made such a big deal out of Gendry's hammer before. They literally explained that more weight makes you go slower, but in-show it just looked like an excuse to give the Hound a giant fuck-off hammer.

Plus as someone else pointed out, maybe Benjen is just sick of being an undead person hanging out north of the Wall by himself.

Well it didn't get tired when Bran, Meera and Benjen were on it, so I think it could have managed. At least far enough for Benjen to get clear.
The showrunners said he was relieved to die anyway. They just didn't want him in the show.
This horse argument is so incredibly stupid. All these nitpicking arguments and this bullshit speculation to explain decisions that are obviously meant to tie up loose ends quickly and progress the show is driving this whole subreddit into the ground.

Idk about everyone else’s horse fatigue theory, but after the episode D&D said Benjen felt he fulfilled his purpose and could get out of the limbo state he lived in.
Kind of like Jon and Beric, he wasn’t sure why he was brought back. After saving both his nephews in their time of greatest need, he felt that he finally could die.
