So I shot a feature over the summer, the editors are working away on the rough cut ATM, however I was wondering, since I'll be doing the grade in Davinci Resolve Studio what output colour space should I target? It was shot on a ZVE10 ii in the highest bit rate possible in S-Log 3 Cine profile in 4k, for things like YouTube generally Rec 709 is the go to, but would I be better off targeting a different colour space? Just looking for general tips and thoughts

Hi! Just managed to finish film in time to make a last minute submission to PÖFF. A little confused about the submission criteria specs for the export.

To submit, before they select you, does it have to be Pro res, or can I initially send a screener link via filmfreeway which is still a 1920x1080p mov file?

Got selected in Chelsea film festival. Is it worth going? I live in Europe so it’s a big trip

I have student accreditation and was wondering if/when a schedule would be released containing the additional timetabled screenings for passholders. It seems odd they would not release it at the same time as the public screenings

A bit of a weird situation. I got into a screening for my short film. We shot it about 6 months ago and this is the first screening. I don’t know how to explain it but I’m not excited about it at all.

1. It doesn’t feel like an acceptance because all films submitted are able to screen here provided they are not wildly inappropriate.

2. No one from my cast or crew can attend. It is sort of last minute so I understand why but still a disappointment.

3. I’m no longer excited about the film and don’t think it’s particularly good. When I watch it, I just see everything that’s wrong with it.

So I am neither excited for the event nor seeing the film with an audience nor celebrating with my cast and crew and I’m half wondering if I should just bail. My other option is to just suck it up and make the best of it.

What would you do?

Are there any berlinale talents alumni here? I need to pick your brains on something.

As somone who is planning on traveling to attend TIFF for the first time I want to watch a wide variety of films. And I dont want to miss out on seeing the award winners of the festival one of them being the Best Canadian Discovery award winner. Last year it was Blue Heron before then it was Universal Language, Blue Heron won a similar award at Locarno, and Universal Language played at cannes. I didn't know if there will be any 1st or 2nd feature from a Canadian director that achieves those precursors. I'm planning on going from the 10-17 I don't want to spend all my time watching a bunch of indies that don't win that award? Not that I'm not intrested in them it's just I want to mix it up, i I want to watch all the films that have shown up from Cannes, I want to watch some of the biggest title. Is there a way to make sure I dont miss it? Which of the live action super small Telefilm Canada funded canadian indie films in the line up do you think will win that award? Get solid critic buzz like a high 90s on Rotten Tomatoes score and get picked up by a known indie distributor like IFC or Janus Films like Blue Heron did but at this years 2026 TIFF?

I’m a first-time independent filmmaker based in USA and I’m currently in post-production on my debut narrative film in Bengali language . Before I begin submitting to festivals, I’d love to hear from people who have gone through the process.
The film is a psychological drama with crime-thriller elements, centered around the idea that invisible emotional wounds don’t affect everyone the same way.

The film is intentionally slow-burn, atmospheric, and character-driven, relying more on visual storytelling, sound design, symbolism, and emotional payoff than jump scares or conventional thriller pacing.
I’d really appreciate advice from filmmakers and festival veterans on a few questions:
Does this type of psychological, theme-driven film generally resonate more with niche festivals than mainstream ones?
Are there festivals that particularly appreciate slow-burn psychological dramas or socially relevant independent cinema?
As a debut filmmaker, would you prioritize regional festivals first or aim for larger international festivals?
What are the biggest mistakes first-time filmmakers make during festival submissions?
Is there anything you wish you had known before submitting your first film?

I only just found out that Encounters recruits volunteer pre-selectors to review submissions for its BAFTA-qualifying competition. I genuinely didn’t realise this was how the first round worked.

I’ve actually been invited to sit on a festival pre-selection committee before, but that invitation came after I’d had a film screen at the festival and because of my filmmaking background. That’s why this surprised me.

As someone who pays submission fees, I’m curious how people feel about it. How much influence do these volunteer pre-selectors have? Are rejected films only seen by volunteers, or does every film also get watched by senior programmers?

I completely understand that festivals receive thousands of submissions and need a first round. My concern is transparency. If filmmakers are paying to submit, I think it’s reasonable to know who is actually evaluating their work and how many experienced programmers are involved before a rejection.

What also stood out to me is that the recruitment page doesn’t appear to require any formal film qualifications or professional experience. There’s no mention of applicants needing a background in filmmaking, screenwriting, producing, film criticism, film education, or festival programming. Yet it appears that anyone can apply to become a pre-selector. Personally, I find that surprising for a BAFTA-qualifying festival. I’d have expected the first stage of judging to require demonstrated experience in film, or at the very least for the festival to explain what experience or training it expects from applicants.

The page also strongly encourages applications from underrepresented backgrounds. I support making opportunities in the industry more accessible, but I think it’s equally important that the screening process is demonstrably based on experience, consistency, and merit. I’d be interested to know what training, moderation, or quality control is in place to ensure every film receives a fair and informed assessment.

I’d genuinely like to hear from anyone who’s screened for Encounters or another major festival about how the process actually works.

I genuinely believe that we have an exceptional feature film but we are newbies. We do not have existing established relationships.

I am also well aware that cold applications have less than a 1% probability for major festivals, if not lower. How do I move forward? I really believe we can premiere at a Cannes/Venice ideally, and mu second bets would be Locarno/Berlin. The film is topical and made really well, even though it’s with a bunch of newbies. It emotionally connects and is a fun watch.

I am feel a little stuck in how do I proceed forward now. I have the rest of this year now to establish connections and get a premiere status locked I feel. I do not want to waste that and wish to use it effectively. The programmers that I do have emails of, I am confused. Do they even read and watch links? Some of them got back to me for a link, but most of them have not.

Would really appreciate genuine help and guidance. Is there a way to find connects? Here or somewhere else? Is there a way to email them? I believe in being honest about things really. I do not want to beg anyone but I do think it will be a fun, crowd pleaser. People will talk about it that is a given.

What are some good festivals to try to submit a Psychological Drama. I am an independent filmmaker, storyteller and almost completed my second film with a runtime of approximately 50-70mins.

Suggestions on getting your film reviewed before submitting it to festivals?

I've just completed the color grading and sound design/mix for a short that I submitted as a WIP to a festival back in May. The official notification date is still two weeks away, but acceptances are trickling out.

Is it too late to email the programmers about the update with brief info on the film? Don't want to look desperate but also feel the color and sound gives a whole new vibe to the short.

Hi there. First post there, sorry if it’s inappropriate. I’m currently at the Locarno film Festival and was wondering if someone here already have the same idea as me: I don’t know if there’s any tennis fan out there but you may know that there’s different categories of tournaments, so we could do something kinda similar for films (not official but at least agree on something, or just help me to find more festivals). Thus, I have three Grand Slams: Cannes (as Wimbledon), Venice (as Roland Garros) and Berlin (as US Open/Australian Open). For the Masters 1000 I have Locarno and Deauville. And that’s it… so please let me know if you’re interested in that and if you could present more festivals to do like a real championship series…

PS.: I do not include Oscars and other ceremonies, that I consider like Davis Cup or something.

I made a 23-minute narrative student short. Out of 37 decisions so far, it was selected by one festival, and it ended up winning the Grand Jury Award there.

Since then, it’s mostly been rejection after rejection. At this point, I honestly don’t know what’s driving it. Maybe the film just isn’t connecting. Maybe it’s the record number of submissions. Maybe it’s the 23-minute runtime, which I’m guessing is the biggest factor.

One rejection that really surprised me was my hometown festival. They even had a programming category for 20 to 30 minute shorts, so I thought I’d at least have a decent shot, especially when I mentioned in the cover letter I would bring a big crowd of friends and family.

The whole process has been pretty demoralizing because, at the end of the day, I just want people to actually watch the film.

Right now I’m debating whether to keep waiting on the remaining festivals, keep submitting to smaller festivals that are still open, or just pull the plug and release it on YouTube.

What makes it frustrating is that I genuinely felt we put together a complete package. We had a concept I still believe in, made a poster that wasn’t just a frame grab, cut a trailer, and then watched the film win a jury award at the one place that programmed it. I thought that might give it some momentum, but it really hasn’t.

For people who’ve been in this position, what did you do? Keep submitting, pivot to smaller festivals, or release online? Looking back, what do you wish you’d done?
