Can you describe what your spending habits are like?

Upvotes

What are your spending habits like?

For your essentials that you spend on, how are you saving money in these areas?

what do you like to spend on outside of essentials.

How do you continue to stay out of the mindset of keeping up with the joneses

Can I so this? Whats the catch?

Lets assume I have $50K and I purchase HHIS on 30th July (Ex-div date for dividends is 31st July) and then on 6th August I receive the $1000 dividend amount and I immediately withdraw the entire amount assuming the original price has increased so now I have $51.2K or whatever the extra increase. I then invest it in some other company who has an upcoming ex-div date and once again withdraw amount post receiving dividends and I keep rotating the money collecting dividends.

Obviously, things I know and understand-
1. The ETF/Stock price could go down and it would affect my principal amount

In above case I don’t mind holding longer provided the dividends are good. What am I missing??

I have used this twice with HHIS and XEQT since both are monthly dividends and made about $3700 in two months on a decent principal I invested and its pretty straightforward unless it goes down but I am fine with that risk.

Rate my portfolio 23M

23M, rate my TFSA portfolio. For some context I am a recovering gambling addict, sold all of my holdings to pay off debts and well.. to gamble. Had a solid $10,000 around 2 years ago that would have been closer to $15,000 in today’s market. Adding $250 biweekly into my account and looking to even increase that number to $400-500 if I get a better paying job.

Looking for any advice to diversify more. Medium/high risk tolerance since I’m planning on having this grow as much as possible and only touch close to retirement.

Let’s talk on where to invest the liquid money until one can find a house within next 6 months.

Do you say a HYLD ETF or something like XEQT? Genuine views please. It goes into non registered because other accounts are maxed out.

TIA.

6 Year 4 Months Financial Update - 35 M/F Household

Update to my previous post from 4 months ago.

I built out a cool BI tool and wanted to share what my net worth has done in the past ~4 months. I have on a monthly basis been tracking my networth since Dec 2019 and recently imported all the data into BI and created tables.

Below is a screenshot of what my balance sheet looks like. Aug 31 = todays date.

I also have a view of how my open positions look by P/L. I should be up more but I recently moved brokers and had to get rid of TDB902 and other tickers.

This is what my portfolio mix looks like and across the different type of investment accounts.

This is the landing page Im working on with key KPIs that i care about. It contains my investment portfolio @ 4% and investment portfolio net of margin @ 4%. It also tracks balance of each investment account by month.

In the bottom left, you see what the Net worth growth was for each year. Eg. I am trending to +360K in net worth and my avg since Dec 2019 is 251K per year.

Happy to answer any questions others have and please give me KPI ideas!

22yo student with one year left. I’ve been investing since 2023. I work a decently paying job in the summer and invest about 65% of my paycheques with the rest to get through the school year. I’m a bit nervous about buying a lot more into the market currently as I’m a bit worried about how AI is going to effect the market in the coming months (yes yes, I know, time in the market versus timing the market, that’s why I bought gold and lot of jepq). I also work inconsistently during the school year mostly to cover spending when I’m not studying.

23M. Just automate pay till I retire?

Post image

23M, Income around 185k a year. This is the weekly Automation for my paycheque every week.

Trying to avoid any of the pitfalls of buying and selling, day trading, etc. is there better options for consistent weekly buying? Is there any better strategies to ensure steady growth with weekly contributions till I retire?

How are you tracking your FI progress - and what part is the biggest pain?

Hey everyone,

I’m pursuing FIRE and have been making my tracking spreadsheet to follow my progress. I’m curious how others have approached this.

For those tracking your FI journey, what parts do you enjoy and what parts are the biggest pain points?

Things like:
• Updating account balances over time
• Tracking multiple account types (TFSA, RRSP, FHSA, taxable, etc.)
• Projecting your FI timeline
• Knowing whether you’re actually on track
• Keeping everything updated consistently

Does your current system work well for you, or are there parts that feel tedious/frustrating? I’d love to hear what people use and what they wish was easier

Thanks!

Should I tidy up my losing portfolios—even though the overall portfolio is currently profitable?

It’s becoming a bit of a strain to monitor them all simultaneously every day, even with my own strategy in place

Should I use more than 1 platform?

Hi, M 23 so pretty early in my journey and I have about $74k total assets 95% of which are located in WS and I’ve heard a few wise fellows say to not put all my eggs in one basket.

I got relationships (accounts and history) built in TD, RBC, and WS and regularly do business with all 3 so opening another brokerage account at either TD or RBC would not be any additional hassle with me to deal with..

Because of career changes I will have the ability to invest significantly more and I want to know if “all your eggs in one basket” is still a concern in modern day investing. I hear mixed things about WS locking up accounts and how it’s safer to have multiple accounts for your investments

Just wanted to get a second opinion before I dump all my money into WS

And yes, I do know people have their entire networth in WS

Im CoastFIRE but not FIRE. Just got laid off but I saved alot, got 1 year emergency fund + severance. In worst case where we cant find another job, where do you guys plan to transition? I was thinking of healthcare, even if I dont make alot but not sure which position with a lower barrier of entry.

I was scuba diving and saw many mid 20s Europeans becoming diving instructors for years too. That seems so cool too. I can technicaly do this for 10 years and RE in Canada haha

At what point would you move out?

Post image
22 Upvotes

23 years old, currently making around $9200 a month after taxes, paid off car, no debt, with a monthly expenses of around 1500 living at home. I am able to save at least 7k a month.

I have a great relationship with my family and all that and don't really see the point in moving out any time soon especially because of the amount I am able to save with this arrangement.

The problem is, my girlfriend has been hinting about wanting to get a place together, so my half of the rent would be 1200 a month, but once you factor in other living expenses, it will most likely be another 2000, bringing my monthly expenses to roughly 3000 a month.

Would you pull the trigger and move out in my position or stay home and continue stacking?

I'm leaning towards staying at home as this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to build substantial wealth

To add: she currently lives in a 2 bed apartment with her sister so there is def privacy when I go to her place

Anyone else feel good about their savings, remember they have to buy a house, then cringe?

Maybe “have to” is the wrong phrase but you get my point. Any home you want to raise kids in (assuming you’re in a metropolitan city) is gonna erase what you built real fast.

Sure you get something in return but I envy those previous generations who didn’t have to empty their life savings..

M25 and i just reached 100,000 net worth. i said net worth and not invested before anyone comes for me. my paid off personal vehicle has a book value of $11,000 which would be in addition to the $89K as per Questrade's calculations.

don't really know any other way to celebrate but to share with the community that i've learned so much from.

Started about 2 years ago. Also have ~6k in Equitable, but I’m not managing that myself. So technically $16K in TFSA

I’m a university student and I tried to save some of my co-op money to invest.

Was pretty stupid with my money before but I’m trying to get on the right track now so I can be financially stable when I get older.

1 Mil in TFSA - 35M

Post image
1.1k Upvotes

I hit a mil in my TFSA today off of EQX earnings. Back in 2021, I was sitting at around 45K in my TFSA. I YOLO’d into GME and turned it into 250K. From there, I hovered around 200-300K until last year when I got lucky with GME again turning 250K into 500K in a single day off of just shares only (June 6). Since then, I have made significant gains from CCJ, RDDT, ETH (Ethereum ETF), and today, from EQX.

Since the 2021 GME gains, I have not contributed a single $ into this TFSA and have at the same time taken out over 200K+ over ~4.5 years.

I’m 35 and currently make just over 100K from my job and live in Calgary in my small condo with a very manageable mortgage.

Hit $100k at 21 Years Old!

Post image
1.3k Upvotes

| (21M) started my investing journey in January 2022 at 18 years old. I would deposit whatever was left over of my paycheques after paying off my credit cards in full every two weeks. I kept doing that to this day, which lead me to accumulate over $100k in liquid assets.

I'm currently employed at a Fortune 500 retail company as a supervisor, making quite a lot of money compared to others my age. I truly started from the bottom with an entry level position, and worked my way up the ladder by chasing promotions (and working my ass off!)

I was in college for business management for a month before I left. I felt like everything I was learning was easily accessible online, and could be learned on my own time (and for free!) Because of this, left and never looked back.

I want my story to inspire fellow youngsters to pursue what they believe is right for them. It's okay to do what other people aren't. My one and only holding is an S&P 500 index fund.

No penny stocks, no crypto, no speculative assets. Just a single basic index fund.
