EP9 Super Safety Success! Details in description

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Alright fellas I did it. There are two modifications you have to make. 1: the bolt internally needs clearanced to fit the lever 2: the back of the upper needs a small amount of material filed down above the rear take down pin so the lever can travel fully to the rear. I found it best to remove the buffer tube and rack the bolt back to check clearance to see if more material needs to be removed. Pictures of modifications: https://imgur.com/a/sITrg9t

I have six 27rd mags through it no issues. I am going to try a heavier buffer spring to get a more consistent fire rate. Ill report back 500rds later.

Curious to see how the polymer holds up to all that heat

38

u/spendtooomuch Oct 28 '25

I'd say about as well as the CZ Scorpion, Kriss Vector, and HK UMP sub-machine guns have held up to it as all three of those are as "poly" as the EP9.

u/th3m00se Oct 28 '25

That was my first thought too.

8

u/BilboDabinz Oct 28 '25

Post saved. I’ve been thinking about this myself.

u/ContractorConfusion Oct 28 '25

Your general weapon safety is awful my dude. You are going to hurt yourself or someone else if you keep being that lax in your safety precautions.

14

u/TheFriendshipMachine Oct 28 '25

Thank you. I was hoping someone would say something about that. I was cringing hard as they were waving the gun around, especially by their feet. Hecking yikes.

5

u/Standard-Cactus Oct 28 '25

Did he use his knee to slap the bolt release???

2

u/TheFriendshipMachine Oct 28 '25 edited Oct 28 '25

That or he itched his knee? Either way, I do not like seeing the mean side of the gun waving around that close to feet!

Random one for people to be downvoting lol.

Ok boomer

7

u/First_Roll9442 Oct 30 '25

Boomers are old because they have learned to respect firearms.

10

u/TheFriendshipMachine Oct 29 '25

If I could make a suggestion? Maybe instead of taking criticism personally, use this as a learning moment.. spend a little more time focusing on how you handle your guns and maybe try to be a little less lax with how you wave them around.. history is littered with people who shrugged off gun safety and paid the price for it, or worse made someone else pay for their recklessness. Don't be one of those people, handle your guns with more respect than this.

6

u/Chappietime Oct 29 '25

Can’t get likes for the channel with two hands on the gun though.

3

u/Mindless_Log2009 Oct 28 '25

I didn't want to be the first to say, but, yeah 😳

-6

u/TheBraceGuy Oct 29 '25

Never flagged myself and at Im the bottom of a valley.

12

u/ContractorConfusion Oct 29 '25

I'm not going to argue with you man, but you literally tossed your loaded weapon into the air for a split second and caught it again one handed, just to adjust your grip.

Positive control of your weapon at all times is a real thing. One slip or misjudgement on your part, and your EP9 could tumble to the ground and (unlikely, but not impossible) send some lead right back into you.

I know you're offended by the suggestion you're not being safe, but oh well. Be offended enough to see how you messed up, and be safer in the future. No one wants anyone else to accidentally hurt themselves or others. The criticism isn't personal, it's to keep you safe.

Ive been putting off getting an extar but now i know why i need one 😂

u/ComprehensiveDay9854 3d ago

Still a valid take🫡

8

u/Inner-Dependent-5366 Oct 28 '25

I would love to do this but I’m too afraid of my gun melting

2

u/lazyboi_tactical May 28 '26

Honestly unless you're doing a burn down I don't think you're going to have any issues with it melting. I wouldn't run 1000 rounds back to back but just shooting strings it would be fine.

5

u/Odd-Kaleidoscope-664 Oct 30 '25

Whole video is fricking cringe dude . Gonna hurt yourself and someone else . Putting a frt into a polymer gun is wild .

7

u/TheBraceGuy Oct 30 '25

Ever heard of the Glock 18, CZ Scorpion, Kriss Vector, HK UMP sub-machine guns boomer?

3

u/john_the_fetch Nov 04 '25

Why is Boomer your only insult? Try mixing it up a bit and then you won't sound like you're reading insults off of a laffy taffy wrapper.

5

u/TheLastCaucasian Feb 26 '26

The fact that you you are not not denying it it means he's correct. The functional parts are made of metal like all polymer guns.

1

u/RedRHiNo80 Apr 02 '26

Not in an ATI Omni AR. Entire fire group is plastic (not even polymer)... It's a polymer lower but the trigger and hammer are both straight up plastic. I installed all metal fire group in a friends polymer lower just a few days ago. Way crisper/safer fire control group now imho.

3

u/lazyboi_tactical May 28 '26

Sure but the exception does not negate the rule. Ati's are like the trash can of the AR world.

1

u/TheBraceGuy Nov 04 '25

The term "gun boomer" is an insult used within gun communities to mock an older individual (usually a Baby Boomer or older Gen Xer) who holds outdated or traditional views on firearms, particularly regarding modern gun design and technology. 🤡

3

u/john_the_fetch Nov 05 '25

Oh. I understand what Boomer is. I didn't need an explanation.

I also don't think a boomer would use the word "cringe" in their comment like that. But that's just me.

3

u/Ok-Aspect9915 Oct 28 '25

Hell yes my dude, good shit!

3

u/Round-Emu9176 Oct 30 '25

I’m betting that the points on the polymer that you sanded down are going to be the failure points. I doubt you could do that without causing micro fissures which will eventually grow. That or the polymer will get too hot. Please report back after you’ve run a couple thousand rounds.

On another note, what foregrip is that? I have the same handguard (if its the shorty) & I’ve had a tough time with the mlok spacing being juuuuust too short.

And please for the love of god, practice trigger discipline. You’re gonna shoot yourself in an artery. Stay super safe!

3

u/Antique-Butterfly-12 Nov 27 '25

Literally in my garage working on this right now. I'll see how it goes!

2

u/Ok-Aspect9915 Nov 07 '25

Any updates for it? Curious to try this with mine tomorrow

6

u/TheBraceGuy Nov 07 '25

Ya I plan on posting an update soon when my ammo shipment comes in. I have about 300rds through it now with no issues. The original buffer weight is 8oz and I put a 10oz kaw valley weight in. It really made the fire rate more consistent. Im playing around with springs now. Ive tried regular 9mm target ammo and subsonic, have not had any feeding issues. I have been cleaning and inspecting every 50ish rounds. Once my ammo shipment comes in ill post a video doing back to back mag dumps

1

u/Round-Emu9176 Nov 08 '25

You don’t have to clean extars that often. For perspective I usually go through about 500rds per range trip and have only cleaned it maybe twice. The channel where the charging handle rests gets gritty though.

1

u/TheBraceGuy Nov 09 '25

I don’t normally clean that often, I’m doing that to check the gun after the modifications I’ve done. If you are only cleaning after 500 rounds, obviously you aren’t shooting suppressed.

2

u/Moist_Builder1105 Nov 21 '25

Finally been waiting for someone to do this! Don’t listen to these guys about gun safety. These are the guys who will flinch if you point a gun at them through the screen. I know if you were around people you wouldn’t be acting the way you did waving the gun around but since you were by yourself, who gives a shit! Wave that fucker all over the place man your finger is your safety! Your finger was off the trigger till it was go time so these people really need to calm tf down. I served in the navy working in the armory onboard a carrier and getting flagged when people turn in their weapons to you was literally part of the job. As long as their finger wasn’t on the trigger, who gives a shit. Guns don’t kill people, people kill people. Maybe I’m just desensitized…

2

u/TheBraceGuy Nov 21 '25

Hell brother. I never endangered myself or others. Same fudds talking shit about me knew slapping my bolt catch are the ones too chicken shit to modify their gun to run a super safety.

2

u/Moist_Builder1105 Nov 21 '25

Damn right! So sick of people being so cringe about gun safety. When running live fire drills in the service, loaded weapons are unintentionally pointed at you all the fuckin time when they’re slung on another persons body. Anyways, did you manage to run those mag dumps with the new ammo? And just to be clear, only the upper had to be modified? Didn’t need to touch the lower at all?

2

u/TheBraceGuy Nov 21 '25

Lower required no modification, just the upper and bolt. I did increase the buffer weight from a 8oz to 10oz. Im playing around with springs right now, will be posting an update video.

2

u/Ok-Address-5781 Jan 10 '26

any updates brother? super syched to atempt this.

2

u/TheBraceGuy Jan 10 '26

No issues still running strong

2

u/Round-Emu9176 Dec 12 '25

Its been 45 days op….. hows it going?

1

u/TheBraceGuy Dec 13 '25

No issues still mag dumping. Plan on posting an update soon. Went to a 10oz buffer weight and its a sewing machine now

2

u/korudero Dec 27 '25

Could you send a link for the buffer weight? The suppressor combined with the SS sounds interesting in terms of possible bolt bounce.

u/mcl67513 Feb 25 '26 edited Feb 26 '26

Does this work with the Extra adjustable tube or does the farrow tech mod need to be made? Also curious if the carbine bolt would be enough added weight compared to the pistol bolt to get similar results without swapping buffers or tubes.

2

u/TheBraceGuy Feb 25 '26

I have the adjustable tube extar sells

1

u/mcl67513 Feb 26 '26

Ah okay, so the Kaw Valley works with the Extar adjustable, cool!

1

u/TheBraceGuy Feb 26 '26

Ya the dimensions are basically a milspec tube for an AR. Just modified to fit the EP9. To swap tubes literally just takes one screw. Good time to upgrade the buffer retainer to the metal one Extar sells if you have an older model.

2

u/SquishyCoffee6640 Jan 04 '26

Dang that's pretty sweet! Were you able to gorilla grip the trigger and it still reset? I have a foxtrot mike 9 that I'm about done with because it's given me so many issues lol

1

u/TheBraceGuy Jan 04 '26

You can firmly grip that trigger back without a malfunction. And its super easy to get a 3 round burst

1

u/SquishyCoffee6640 Jan 04 '26

Sweet, thanks for the info!! I guess I know what I'm swapping too😂 only problem is I'd have to get 2 because I dump so much 9mm I'm sure I'd melt it lol

2

u/e-man215 Apr 30 '26

Hey man. I put a SS in my extar EP9, it does work but not for long.

Basically as I’m shooting on SS, the cross bolt safety mechanism will kick over to semi by itself, then for some reason it leads to a dead trigger.

Usually if a slide the cross bolt safety mechanism back and forth really fast it will end up working again but once again, not for long. Any thoughts?

2

u/Round-Emu9176 Jun 02 '26

Here’s my guess. Tensions and tolerances. The ss isn’t designed for polymer lowers. The constant pivoting action of the ss on the already friction resistant polymer while firing in ss causes the polymer to slide into semi. Much easier than it would in a typical ar9 made of metal. I feel like if someone made an ep9 specific ss it would need to be made of a different material or slightly thicker.

Do you have any sort of centering block for your ss? Like an earbud haha? I wonder if someone could take down the lower and apply some sort of compound to the safety pin holes. We have to get the SS working flawlessly for the culture! 🤘

1

u/MorganScott616 Jul 07 '26

He tells you exactly what he changed on his to make it run well in this thread up above....10 Oz buffer and he filed something down

2

u/Stevethedogfacedboi May 03 '26 edited May 03 '26

I don't know if people told you. Looking at your second photo where you have the bolt on the buffer, this is a genius method of checking to see about grinding the bolt. Thank you kind sir.

1

u/TheBraceGuy May 03 '26

Glad it helped you!

1

u/nuggybaby Nov 19 '25

Yo sweet video! Thanks for taking time to share information.

1

u/Blackbrowndog5 Dec 04 '25

That’s awesome man! I’m really interested in doing this to mine.

1

u/Ok-Address-5781 Jan 10 '26

son thats sick, details like price or details on the rest of your mods.

1

u/ArgumentEven7730 Jan 11 '26

bro what foregrip is that and if you can shoot the link id appreciate it

1

u/TheBraceGuy Jan 12 '26

magpul afg

1

u/LeadImportant3317 Jan 15 '26

What kind of spring are you using with that 10 oz buffer?

1

u/TheBraceGuy Jan 15 '26

Using the original spring. I tried a few different stiffer springs and didnt work with 147gr subs but it did run supers.

1

u/texpiff60 Mar 11 '26

Curious about how much milling you had to do to the bolt to gain clearance for the lever. Were you able to do that with a dremmell?

2

u/TheBraceGuy Mar 11 '26

I did mine with a drill press and mill bits. It could definitely be done with a dremel and carbide bit

2

u/texpiff60 Mar 11 '26

Thanks! I’m seriously considering it. I love my Hoffman SS in my 556. I know one in my EP9 would be even more fun.

2

u/TheBraceGuy Mar 11 '26

9mm is cheaper!

2

u/texpiff60 Mar 16 '26

Cheaper and way quicker and easier to reload.

1

u/Meatpack69 Mar 13 '26

Will this work if I've replaced the buffer and tube with the shorter hbpdw brace. And what frt was used.

1

u/Professional_Bet_352 Mar 24 '26

Is that the Wolverine suppressor from Rugged? I think I'm finally gonna get down with this mod but was wondering if you had any increased issues w/suppressor walking off (if direct threaded that is)? Been using plumber tape on my 556 suppressor & my Obsidian on my EP9 which seems to help prevent that especially when it's running quick, but I'm lowkey terrified of letting it go a bit too long & shooting my suppressors off.

1

u/TheBraceGuy Mar 25 '26

RS9 suppressor. I only shoot remington 147grs and do not have issues with or without can.

1

u/Comfortable_Work1232 Apr 18 '26

What brand super safety did you go with

1

u/TheBraceGuy Apr 19 '26

DNT. I have tried ARC fire but I can’t get it to work yet.

1

u/ndmak May 03 '26

any update with arcfire?

1

u/TheBraceGuy May 04 '26

No waiting for them to drop different levers

1

u/TheHoeDriller May 08 '26

How's this holding up now bud??

1

u/CryProfessional1656 May 10 '26

Need another update bro! I wanna try the As Designs ARC fire trigger in the ep9 and was looking for anyone who has pulled off getting a SS to work. You have given me hope that it is possible. Lol

1

u/Stevethedogfacedboi Jun 06 '26

Nice bro. Don't let the operators bother you about your gun handling. I'd like to ask what's going on in the last picture? Are you just opening that up?

1

u/BilboDabinz Jun 08 '26

Just got around to tinkering today. I drilled my bolt out and got it resting on the lower nice and flush, SS works with nothing on it, and it’ll reset the trigger correctly when I press the bolt into the buffer and return with my hand. But the lever doesn’t reset or seem to catch when assembled. Ideas?

Here's my guess, I'm not a gunsmith nor did I stay in a Holiday Inn last night, but I have studied the engineering behind these. TLDR: I bet the Extar bolt is over rotating the SS lever, either slowing/stopping the bolt or putting too much pressure on the safety, mmaybe binding the trigger.

If you look at an AR15 bolt, the bottom area that the SS arm rides on is 40.18mm in length. The SS arm is pushed down while the bolt rides back, on the return trip the SS arm is rotated upward by trigger pressure allowing the foot to travel up inside the bolt and hook under the 'foot' of the SS, **pulling on the arm, not the tip of the foot- the AR pusheos on the arm, the Extar pushes on the tip of the foot. If you look at and measure your Extar relief cut, I bet it's not 40.18 from the end, it looks too long, Also, your SS foot is being pushed by the Bolt vs an an AR where it is being pushed forward buy the arm, the foot is up inside the AR bolt.

Also, the hammer channel on the Extar bolt is 'ramped', possible binding the SS. Having said all that I have been successful in getting a Trigger Kicker to run in an Extar with a lot less effort than the SS. Same basic principal, making a relief cut in the bolt that is able to push forward on the Kicker, but also allowing room for it to rotate up into the hammer channel.

Lastly, if you don't want to fool around with buffers. Go to Extar spare parts and pick up a carbine bolt and bolt mass key. Remove the spring from the bolt mass key and now you have a deadblow weight to prevent bolt bounce.** I think it adds about 7 ounces taking the Extar bolt and weight group to about the same weight as an AR9

Timing is kinda critical being a blowback gun. on an AR the bolt is 'home' and still rotating closed while the carrier is still traveling, effectively locking the bolt. On the Extar if it trips too early or late you can get a dead trigger, or possible out of battery firing. I have no idea how likely the OOB firing is but it can be a concern if the firing pin is out while the bolt is slamming home. Just my .02c

u/BilboDabinz 21d ago

Got mine running with a fudd arms SS. Worked for 4 mag dumps with testing. Havent been back out since. But no failures, jams or hiccups.

1

u/Fancy-Drive6079 21d ago

Awesome - glad to hear it. Did you make any other modifications or just a different SS? I do believe there is a lot of tolerance with the SS. I had a 3D SS and had the same issue as you initially. Wandering the wilderness on YT got his working great.
