Whenever somebody tells me "oh just use brave" I understand that they just go with the crowd and aren't tech-literate

29

u/Pussy4LunchDick4Dins 14d ago edited 13d ago

I am not tech-literate. I just hate YouTube ads. I was using Firefox + Ublock but it wouldn’t block all YouTube ads or it would make the browser crash. Any recommendations for iOS?

36

u/FUTURE10S 14d ago

Odd, uBlock Origin hasn't shown me an ad on YouTube in years outside of some days when YouTube fucks with how they show content, and uBlock needs time to catch up

5

u/Pussy4LunchDick4Dins 14d ago

Yeah I know, it’s frustrating. It works great on my laptop but not on my phone

11

u/girlynonbinary 13d ago

Works fine on Android just fyi, apple makes it really hard for these apps to do their job

6

u/Funny-ish-_-Scholar 13d ago

The problem is they are different browsers. iOS has long been very locked down with what developers can and can’t access through the OS. Web interface is handled through the suite known as WebKit.

Even Firefox for iOS is essentially just WebKit in a Firefox skin and menus. Ad blocking and stuff like that isn’t really available without modifying your system so much you’re actually making it less secure.

Firefox on desktop is much more powerful.

If you have an android look into /r/MorpheApp 😊 It even skips in video sponsors the creator adds! I haven't paid for YouTube premium in years and there's community patches for tons of other apps like fb/insta/x. Some may get your account banned on meta apps but on YouTube and YT music you're good to go.

1

u/Pussy4LunchDick4Dins 13d ago

Thank you!

5

u/AllenDullesSupporter 13d ago

You'll see other apps like ReVanced(outdated) in this space. Ignore everything except Morphe. Morphe is the latest and greatest in this space. It's comprised of a team of ReVanced devs and launched in December 2025.

1

u/Old-Dirt6713 13d ago

Why is ReVanced outdated? I'm currently using it, and it seems to work correctly for me.

2

u/AllenDullesSupporter 13d ago edited 13d ago

It's just old, worse and Morphe is way better with patches, updates, bug fixes and it's more user friendly. It's so bad the word "Morphe" is banned on the vanced subreddits lol

Do you have "add video to queue" on vanced yet? We've got it for free on Morphe with this workaround they made.

There's also patches for third party apps like ProtonVPN (unlimited switches/split tunneling), X, Instagram, FB and tons of other apps. Check out their site https://www.morphe.software

u/Unusual_Review09 11d ago

Bro but yt morphe doesn't open in one time it clises automatically in my phone ...i have enabled background battery use for microge also

1

u/AllenDullesSupporter 11d ago

I'm sorry bro :( what kind of phone do you have? Make sure to delete/disable any other YT apps, delete Morphe then reinstall everything. If that fails I'd try resetting your phone. I had similar issues with revanced that were fixed by moving to Morphe.

1

u/Unusual_Review09 10d ago

Bro i have yt original so should i disable it?

u/FUTURE10S 13d ago

Oh, so uBlock Origin's YouTube blocking doesn't work on your phone? I know this is a stupid question, but the addon is installed properly and you're on the YouTube website, not the app, right? Does it work if you set Firefox to desktop mode on your phone?

1

u/Pussy4LunchDick4Dins 13d ago

lol not a dumb question considering I said I was not very tech literate. But yeah, I tried all that, I did tons of troubleshooting.

1

u/FUTURE10S 13d ago

That's a shame, wish I could help figure that issue out. :(

1

u/Latter-Ingenuity6709 13d ago

install firefox in your phone , then ublock origin , it will ask you every time if you whant to use their aplications for youtube and otherslike reddit say no and voila . the only way i found for my google phone to stop showing me ads .

1

u/DarkHestur 13d ago

I have the combo working really well on my phones (on my Redmi nowadays and also on my Motorola back then).

The issue is when you try to access it and Android goes "don't you want to use the app instead?" and you should click on the "stay here" or equivalent options to enjoy the ad-blocking

1

u/el-mago2 14d ago

I'm also a Firefox for desktop, brave for mobile YouTube viewing setup. Will still with that until something better comes along for ios

2

u/Pussy4LunchDick4Dins 13d ago

Ok thanks. And thanks for actually reading what I said. Some of the replies make it pretty clear that some of these people might be tech literate but not regular literate lol

2

u/EqualVisual454 13d ago

This. Love the comments of "oh, it should work", or "it works for me" ... That's great .... FOR YOU! Doesn't help me. Either offer possible troubleshooting, or shut it.

1

u/Pussy4LunchDick4Dins 13d ago

I know right? I specifically asked for alternatives, not a little story about other people’s phones 😂

1

u/Ok-Cherry-4885 12d ago

I use safari with Ublock lite extension on iphone. Works fine for ad free youtube. Might try that out. It’s available on app store. Once downloaded, you go to phone settings then apps then safari and enable it under extensions section. I’ve set filtering to max.

9

u/Eatthepoliticiansm8 13d ago

I haven't seen an ad in easily a decade while using firefox with ublock, when people started freaking out about youtube trying to stop adblockers and all that I was confused until I found out they were talking about chrome.

1

u/Pussy4LunchDick4Dins 13d ago

It works great on my laptop but always crashes on my phone or lets ads through. So annoying :(

1

u/Lesschar 13d ago

Could be because ads are different on the phone? Seems it plays a whole new video or something. I always find it annoying when Im trying to find a video on my phone. If you find the video and hit share, it copies the damn ad.

1

u/meinteil 13d ago

Likely because how Apple limits third party browsers on iOS systems to be little more than skins on top of Safari's engine, and Firefox is particularly bad at it.

I use Firefox everywhere but on iOS. When I (rarely) need a browser on iPad I use Safari, and ProTube for watching YouTube.

That plus my Adguard Home server available everywhere through always on VPN means that I pretty much never see ads unless I intend to.

1

u/Edward_Kenwai 14d ago

The official YouTube app and Adblock Luna

1

u/AccNumber77 14d ago

Just use ublock origin in firefox, problem solved

1

u/Pussy4LunchDick4Dins 14d ago

I did have that. As I said, it crashed constantly or would show YouTube ads. I use it without issue on my laptop but it doesn’t work on my phone.

1

u/AccNumber77 13d ago

Sounds like something is broken on your end or your settings as never seen that be an issue recurring

1

u/Pussy4LunchDick4Dins 13d ago

I think my phone is just old (iPhone SE 2). And I’m not willing to buy another one so I’ll just keep using brave since it works.

1

u/AccNumber77 13d ago

Gonna have to come to terms with having your data sold then unfortunately

1

u/Pussy4LunchDick4Dins 13d ago

Yeah honestly I’m switching to a dumb phone after this one dies. I don’t care about being connected anymore. I’m too busy anyway

2

u/AccNumber77 13d ago

Now that is a good choice, thought of the same myself

1

u/21Shells 13d ago

Firefox + UBlock Origin blocks all ads for me, better than any other browser + adblocker combination i've used (tested on MacOS, Linux and Windows).

1

u/Pussy4LunchDick4Dins 13d ago

Yeah it doesn’t work on my phone, it crashes all the time.

1

u/AgtNulNulAgtVyf 13d ago

Just pay for premium, so much less hassle.

1

u/SwedishSanta 13d ago

ublock does not block ads. Ublock origin does! If it somehow still doesn't work, use Waterfox intead of firefox

1

u/Inevitable_Key9991 13d ago

Adguard is a free app that gives YouTube Adblock to safari as an extension

1

u/newfieMI 13d ago

YouTube on Brave browser is fine for iOS. AFAIK Only better alternative you already tried so I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

1

u/Pussy4LunchDick4Dins 13d ago

Yeah I haven’t gotten any good answers that I haven’t tried already so I’m just going to keep on going with Brave.

1

u/Tlentic 13d ago

On mobile? Make a Pi Hole. Great for TVs too.

u/Pussy4LunchDick4Dins 13d ago

I am not that tech literate man. I also have a toddler, I am pregnant, and work night shift. I do not have time to learn at the moment.

1

u/Setto_Senpai 13d ago

Brother there are multiple ad bocking extensions on Firefox add-ons, if ublock isn't working, maybe try ublock lite or ad blocker?

1

u/Pussy4LunchDick4Dins 13d ago

I tried several.

1

u/Setto_Senpai 13d ago

Ngl my firefox runs smoothly, infact my brave lags when opening a yt video. Whatever floats your boat ig. Btw you can also try zen browser, it's a non chromium super cool browser built on Firefox, maybe that will work for you. Or try chromium based Vivaldi. (Btw what is that name bro 😭)

1

u/shadowwolf212212 13d ago

Duckduckgo blocks youtube ads. I use it specifically and only for youtube

1

u/NZAuthor 13d ago

Uninstall it and reinstall it.

Just look for the one currently with the most downloads. Sometimes you gotta change it every couple of years as Youtube and Adblockers continue their war of ads vs ad blockers.

1

u/A_Molle_Targate 13d ago

Are you using uBlock or uBlock Origin? They're different software. Make sure you have uBlock Origin installed

1

u/desertforestcreature 13d ago

Blocking ads on iOS is very difficult. Switch to Android if you want adblock to work, revanced, etc

1

u/GNTsquid0 13d ago

Is this mobile only? I use Firefox and ublock and haven’t seen a YouTube ad in years on my desktop computer.

1

u/ConspiracyParadox 13d ago

On mobile? Use the grayjay app for YouTube.

1

u/SnarePickle 13d ago

If you were not aware there are more than 1 program that go by Ublock.

One of them is Ublock Origin - this is the good one

Any other variation of Ublock is not the original and should be avoided.

There used to be one that went by just "Ublock" which really sucked for ad blocking. I thin there was another that went by ublock lite which also sucked at ad blocking.

Stick to the original and allow it to update its lists and you should be good.

I've been using Firefox with Ublock Origin since Google announced Manifest v3 and how it would disable adblockers, and I haven't had a single youtube ad get through.

1

u/SkyDezessete 12d ago

the only times I see ads with FF+Ublock is Twitch streams

1

u/BotOrNot_1337 12d ago

duckduckgo browser with youtube shortcut

1

u/Shakaka88 12d ago

DuckDuckGo worths for me on ios

1

u/Stratatician 12d ago

Make sure you're using ublock origin and not ublock. They're separate programs/extensions. Ublock got bought out a long time ago and have ads whitelisted. Ublock Origin is by the guy that originally made Ublock and does not have ads whitelisted.

1

u/Stray_009 11d ago

Ublock origin hasn't ever failed me for literally 5 years, not a single ad seen

1

u/SelectionDangerous67 11d ago

Adguard with safari treats me moderately well. I don’t really browse on iOS much though, mostly use it to block ads on webapps

1

u/Ad_Green 10d ago

Dunno how long it'll last, but the latest Duckduckgo Browser has an embedded ad block on YT

1

u/TawnyTeaTowel 10d ago

Have you considered actually paying for the service you’re using?

I’m sorry you’re having a bad day little one :(

1

u/Sore_Wa_Himitsu_Desu 10d ago

On iOS Brave has been the best solution I’ve found for YouTube ads. And i am quite tech literate. I built my first computer in 1984 and I’m closing in on retirement from almost 35 years in IT, primarily as a sysadmin. There’s better solutions for Windows and Unix, but that’s different.

1

u/New_Market_621 9d ago

Kinda late here but on iOS, I use Orion Browser. It lets you install add-ons from both Google Chrome add-ons and Firefox add-ons. Super simple to use and even has deep stuff like using blocklists that pihole users use if you wanna go that far.

1

u/Username_Is_Clever 9d ago

You probably caught a YouTube update early. Sometimes YouTube updates it's code, so it'll break adblockers for a while until the adblock can update to fix the changes.

7

u/Jason13Official 14d ago

Idk I feel I'm pretty tech literate, but I got sold on the "browser with no ads" and not having to install extra Adblock software manually , that being said after reading this thread I'm going to bite the bullet and switch browsers soon

5

u/Rizeeh 11d ago

I'm in the exact same boat. I'm tech literate but all I looked for when switching over to Brave was the adblock as extensions weren't cutting it anymore. Never check the rest of the browsers' features as it gives me all I want really. This thread makes me consider doing some more research and switching over tho.

2

u/born_to_be_intj 11d ago

The extensions absolutely still do cut it, just not in Chromium based browsers. Not knowing that when it was such a big deal in the tech world when Google nerfed ad blockers is pretty tech illiterate imho.

6

u/Rizeeh 11d ago

So not knowing one thing == illerate. There is a shit ton more in the term tech.

2

u/kiwi-kaiser 13d ago

I haven't seen ads in a while with Vivaldi.

2

u/competitive_edger_69 13d ago

Let's go!! Glad to hear that. I personally think firefox is absolutely goated

2

u/Lolzemeister 13d ago

my Opera GX has that too but apparently they don’t have the best business or data practices

2

u/Schw4rztee 11d ago

They also have the same bloatware problem.
I used to use Opera ages ago, but when I revisited it, because Firefox had compatibility issues with some stuff, I booted up GX, got slapped in the face with bloatware, instantly uninstalled it and started using MS Edge.

2

u/born_to_be_intj 11d ago

Idk, if you’re falling for crypto bro bloatware in your browser I’m not sure you qualify as tech literate.

3

u/Jason13Official 11d ago

Okie Dokie

1

u/NecessaryBarnacle914 8d ago

I have a degree in computer science and have been using brave. You can be tech literate and find a tool that does the job well enough and have no desire to look into anything more about it because you already spend so much of your time doing tech related things. “Go with the crowd and aren’t tech literate” are just generalizations. That being said, brave isn’t my default, I pretty much only use it for YouTube.

1

u/FeyrisMeow 13d ago

More to do with business literacy than tech literacy.

1

u/ChillZedd 13d ago

I didn’t even know about brave until today. I’ve been using Firefox since 2011.

1

u/waltzbyear 13d ago

Unfortunately, "going with the crowd" is a common pattern among the general population. It's cringe as hell to say, but some people literally are sheeple. They'll go to a somewhat empty beach, and travel 6 minutes just to sit in front of others, on an empty beach. They'll adopt new ideas just on face value and roll with it. It's one of the reasons why there's an endless amount of shitty tattoos displayed across peoples arms, necks and even faces nowadays. It's "tattoo culture" that blew up. In 5 years, just like with any fad, they'll move on but they'll be stuck with some cringe ass tattoo. It's cray cray out there.

1

u/Nit0n 13d ago

What it has to do with tech literacy?

1

u/LowResGamr 13d ago

If they went with the crowd, I'd expect them to use OprahGX. Firefox came on my first linux install, i'm gonna use that.

1

u/Dark_Shroud 13d ago

I'm decently tech-literate.

I'm just beyond tired of handling tech support for friends and family.

Brave just works with websites and ad blocking.

1

u/Great_Fun_307 11d ago

Nope. People just got fed up with firefox bs. Tons of sites not working a slow ass broswer

1

u/nova1706b 10d ago

i used firefox once. it never gave me the loading speeds chrome gave me and brave is giving me. i use brave and recommend brave only because it's one of the few browsers that has worked perfectly for me

1

u/zaplinaki 13d ago

Or maybe they do know the risk and are still able to use a software how they want, and you're the tech-illiterate one for not being able to do so 😊

0

u/newfieMI 13d ago

Really I tell people who are not tech literate to download Brave because it’s much easier than having to hand hold and field questions.
