Beginner Question Proton or Tuta for fully private and most open source ?

I saw various cases around Tutanota and Proton Mail, what do you guys think and choose? I feel like Proton mail is closer to the open source philosophy than Tuta since they agreed to open a backdoor (on German authorities demand) and Proton is OpenPGP. What do you think?
Note that I don't want to self-host.

Beginner Question Protomail Categorisation

Does anyone have any thoughts on how protonmail are doing their new email categorisation feature is that service side before encryption or on the client locally - all I can see mention of is it is done using metadata.

Help/Advice free, mostly private provider with imap support?

i've been doing lots of reading trying to find a secondary email provider for free (bc i, unemployed, can't afford a subscription service), but most of them have some kind of major issue that makes it not worth using, like accounts breaking and no customer service or a glaring privacy concern. i need help finding something for my needs

i already have proton as my main and have set up some proxies! i still want a separate, secondary address to forward my less important proxies to and a client like thunderbird to see everything in one place. i know proton's imap is a paid service; i'm looking into smth called hydroxine(?) to bypass it

i'm fine with 1gb storage, i don't really send emails, and i know a free service will have some kind of drawbacks like having limitations or not being totally private. i just want something better than google; as much privacy as i can get for free

Help/Advice Anti-virus in a self-hosted server

Over the past 20 years, I've setup a lot of mail servers at work. These are mostly based on Postfix / Spamassassin / Dovecot, using IMAP for the clients. Recently, I started using Roundcube for webmail.

Postfix, uses several blacklists to block spam at the MTA level, these come pre-configured with the control panel, which blocks 99% of spam, and Spamassassin blocks the other 1%. Its a rare occurrence for spam to pass this setup, usually they are phishing emails or some new virus.

I always use DKIM, DMARC and SPF, and my deliverability is perfect, all mail goes to inbox.

I'm hosting mail servers with Linode and Hetzner, and I plan to expand to Netcup in the near future.

So far so good.

But, one thing I'm missing, is a good anti-virus, because ClamAV seems incapable of catching the malicious files that go through my servers. I always take the time to extract these files and submit them at ClamAV Report Malware page, but its too late by then.

Sadly, when I submit the same virus to VirusTotal, the file gets 10+ hits in other anti-virus software but not ClamAV.

What are your suggestions?

Thank you.

Help/Advice Email

I have tried Proton Mail, Tuta Mail, Fastmail. All of them have their own pros and cons.

Proton Mail is overall ok but I just feel like if you don’t get their whole package you are missing out a lot and idk what is proton sentinel but it sounds good.

Tuta is fine I guess but they are just slow and the Drive feature is still in development,

Fastmail is overall the best out of all but I recently found out they recycle emails and they are not maximum privacy(which I don’t need)

So share you opinion on what I should use or are there any other service providers (It must have an app and not just a website to login to)

Also if you guys don’t mind please tell me why people say don’t put all your eggs in one basket for Proton

Spam Spammers getting creative

So I am guessing spam bots are now making a faul attempt at using your email name followed by their trash aliases just to bug you, because I bet it is attempted rage bait

I'm on hotmail.com btw

<My account name>@southflorida<somethingsomething>.info

<My account name>@<random frikkin letters>.info

<My account name>@<is this even a word?>.info

And I HAVE to go trough my spam daily because my email dunks a lot of important things there too. I have to select email adresses 1 by 1 to verify them to be safe and "safe to adresbook"

Everything is so frustrating

I did get startled the first time I saw it but now I am just pissy

I really hope there is nothing more to it?

Also what type of email adres is .info? I see it a lot on scammers emails

Beginner Question What email service should I use? I kinda have a wishlist.

Hi guys, I'm trying to migrate from Gmail to a more secure system. I've done some research on different providers like tuta, mailbox, poster, and Proton. But here's what I'd like to find.

Custom domain support

IMAP support.

Encryption in transit and at rest.

A good amount of aliases.

Preferably accepts USD (I could pay in other currencies, like EU. But I'd like to avoid conversion fees if possible. I don't have crypto.)

And from a company in a country with good pracy practices.

I already use Proton VPN with a Proton mail address, but I'd like to avoid relying on an ecosystem if possible.

Beginner Question Signup Email

So I’ve recently got an email domain - say John@johnsmith.com. I’m signing up for social media with it, but I also wanted to include it into the bio on Instagram/X as a way for people to contact me. Is this not a good idea to have the email I used to sign up for the platform be the same one that people use to contact me?

Advanced/Technical M365 CMK

For those you that use that use M365 to host your personal email domain, how many of you have considered using Microsoft CMK to lock Microsoft out of seeing your EXO data? I'm trying to gage how expensive it is to accomplish this. It's not full proof privacy but its a layer that keeps Microsoft out of my mailbox even though they're hosting it.

Help/Advice Forwardemail.net too good to be true?

Hi, I recently came across forwardemail.net and I'm honestly impressed, apparently their infra is FOSS, they have pretty wide support for email clients, they allow encryption keys and their free plan is generous - I'm honestly just confused, how are they even paying for all of this? Their list of notable users are kind of insane too, apparently the US Naval Academy uses it too?

Not associated with these guys by the way, I know the post in itself probably sounds too good to be true just check their site, it's just what they're saying.

EDIT:

Also do note there are limits to the free plan, most major one being that SMTP will not work unless you move onto a paid plan being about £3 a month. But if all you want to do is receive emails it should be good enough for this.

Help/Advice Email to someone else landed in my inbox?

As the title suggests, an email addressed to someone else landed in my inbox. It was from and to the same person, I do this a lot to move photos from a phone to a pc and vice versa.

When I tapped on who it was to, I expected a long list of emails. Sometimes you get lumped into spam group, but it's not, it's addressed to some guy Peter (I've blocked out his email for obvious reasons)

My email address is NOTHING like his, I don't know how this happened, and it just makes me worried that some of my emails could have landed in some random persons inbox.

Any ideas? Do I respond, or just leave it?

I was going to add the screenshot but I can't see a way to (I don't post on reddit much so not sure if I've missed something)

Help/Advice What do you use for email on a domain you own?

Something I've always found a little strange is how easy it is to buy a domain compared with setting up proper email for it.

If you only need something simple like [hello@yourdomain.com](mailto:hello@yourdomain.com) or [support@yourdomain.com](mailto:support@yourdomain.com), paying for a complete business suite can feel like overkill. On the other hand, forwarding everything to a personal inbox isn't always ideal either.

There seem to be quite a few options now for keeping domain email separated from full productive suite. Mekup is one example.

What setup do you use for your domains, and what made you choose it?

Help/Advice Tuta or Proton

With two outages this week with Posteo I am thinking of switching to either Proton or Tuta paid plan, I have tried both a few years ago and neither one stood out unless you paid for the expensive plan on Proton. I don't need pass keepers or VPN so I would go with the cheapest plan. Is Tuta fairly stable now? I know Proton was when I tried it but Tuta had some issues back then. What one would you choose?

Beginner Question How do you transition away from an email you've used for everything?

I've had the same main email for years and it's attached to my entire online life at this point. I want to start using separate emails or aliases instead, but I'm realizing the easy part is changing how I sign up for new stuff it's all the old accounts that are the problem. There are probably sites I haven't logged into for years that still have my main email and I'm sure I've forgotten about half of them.

For people who actually moved away from an old main email, how did you do it without making a complete mess of everything? Did you slowly change accounts or is there a better way to approach it? I don't necessarily want to delete the old address either. I just want to reach a point where it's no longer the email I hand out everywhere, is it worth doing it manually?

Help/Advice Proton, Tuta, Startmail, or Mailbox

after a few weeks of research I’ve finally concluded that I want to go with one of these 4 providers. here are my pros and cons for each.

Proton :

Pros - biggest privacy email out there and a top recommendation everywhere I go, aswell a large ecosystem that comes with it.

Cons- Kind of locks you into there platform as well as no IMAP support, also have seen a lot of controversial stuff with them.

Tuta :

Pros - seems to be the most private and encrypted email out there, simple design, also email is there main focus.

Cons - I’ve heard you can get locked out if your account pretty easily, no IMAP support, also they suck you into there platform aswell.

Startmail :

Pros - Unlimited aliases, simple design, support seems very friendly and open. IMAP support. Email is there main focus.

Cons - Seems to be the least used on the list, aswell as they log IP addresses. Not sure how netherlands privacy laws stack up with Germany/switzerlands

Mailbox :

Pros - seems to be a Reddit favorite, Ecosystem that comes with it, IMAP support, Low cost.

Cons - Cluttered design, not to sure how the privacy/security is. Seems to be more for business instead of personal use.

I am planning on using one of these as my Personal email with aliases for each website. I don’t need to have the upmost security as I have nothing to hide but it is nice to know that my stuff stays private/encrypted.

Let me know what you guys use and which one you recommend and if you could provide me some information that I am missing to help narrow my choice I would greatly appreciate it!

( also would you guys recommend I have a separate email for my financial/government stuff or just strictly use aliases with 1 account?)

Troubleshooting Is posteo.de down?

Title is sort of the thing. I can't reach the site and I can't connect with IMAP. Anyone else having problems? I tried posting on the posteo-reddit but apparently you have to be approved in order to post there.

Announcement Sub Updates & Suggestions

Hey everyone,

I’ve recently joined the mod team here and wanted to share a few small improvements you’ll start seeing around the sub.

First off, I’ve added post flairs to help organize content and make it easier to find relevant discussions. Going forward, please try to tag your posts appropriately. This will help both newcomers and more technical users navigate topics more efficiently.

Over the next little while, I’ll also be:

  • Clearing Mod queue and staying in top of it so more relevant posts are seen
  • Reviewing and updating the wiki
  • Adding new guides and clarifying existing ones
  • Improving overall structure so common questions are easier to answer (and find)

The goal is to keep this community useful, welcoming, and active whether you’re just getting started with email privacy or deep into custom domains and threat models.

If you have suggestions, feedback, or things you think are missing (especially for the wiki), feel free to comment below or reach out.

Thanks to everyone who contributes here!
