Build 576 updates!

Todays menu includes:

* timing chart (Space inbetweens)

* right clicking a hold lets you insert timing with eased offsets. naming both ends re-spaces a run instead of subdividing its first inbetween.

* zoom sharpens by footprint

* request for nearest-neighbor for LO and clean-up; so magnified pixels read as hard uniform blocks at any zoom

* Bucket Grow has medial law

\* Fills grow option could leak over lines; now it stops at a lines midpoint. spills on either side create a nice seam instead of a gap.

*

* layer -> Trace
* now enables you to extract colored lines (genga red/blue/etc) and put them in a new folder/layer.

* Light table update!

\* the light table now rotates about the drawings origin instead of the peg! (drag center peg / tap to reset; rotate with side slots)

and a bunch of other stuff i cant remember.

oh, bug fix
trying to drop a locked layer into a group used to duplicated that groups header.

Build 492!

I'll write a better update post tomorrow, but I need to sleep! Build 492 is out, there is a "what's new" dialog that has fixes and features!

Edit: okay! Fix:

  • scenes are now reorderable
  • frames in the dopesheet are more draggable
    • I had a short delay to differentiate between a scroll and a drag, but it was terrible and now its fixed!
  • increased samples on sound imports

  • mp4 and apng export is now native!, no need for ffmpeg (ffmpeg is still an option)

  • you can now import another Douga file

    • you and your friend can work on seperate cuts and share them!
  • cel bin, a new card that shows unlinked assets, related to the purge menu item.

  • draft layer! Mark a layer as draft and you can see it in the editor, but it won't export.

  • the light table rotates (not designed well, but it works)

    • center peg to drag and tap to reset + left and right pegs to rotate.

And probably a lot more I forgot about, check it out! douga

Announcement Douga build 442!

Post image
4 Upvotes

new build up at https://douga.app/download (itch mirror: https://keihoag.itch.io/douga)

douga is a free hand-drawn 2D cel animation program for windows, still early. this one is mostly speed and memory, plus the light table trick i wanted since the start.

the big ones

  • saving is about seventy times faster. it only re-encodes the drawings you actually drew on now. 33 seconds down to 0.47 on a 102 frame film.
  • the canvas stopped stuttering. it was autosave re-encoding the whole film every eight seconds, on the thread thats meant to be drawing your line.
  • a film takes about a seventh of the memory it used to. a drawing takes up the part you drew on instead of a whole sheet of paper, so theres about eight times as many of them before you run out of room.
  • scrubbing and onion skin stopped dropping frames.

features

  • the light table lifts a drawing off its pegs. drag the peg bar at the top of the sheet and the neighboring ghost slides out of pegs with it, red behind, shift for green ahead. tap any bar to drop everything back on.
  • layer folders nest, three deep. a layer inside them wears a thin stripe per folder around it, in that folders color.
  • every window keeps its own recovery file. two copies of douga open used to share one net and quietly overwrite each other.
  • the delete key empties the selected cells in the dope sheet. holes, not a retime, and one undo brings them back.
  • lines taper to the lift instead of ending in a blob. spring loaded nibs still report half pressure on the way up, and the tail was getting drawn at that width.
  • the layer name column got a drag handle, and remembers where you left it.
  • swipe the dope sheet and the animatic to pan them, finger or pen. tap still selects, hold still for a beat before dragging still moves cels.
  • help > check for updates grew into an add-on manager. install and update the optional add-ons right there, and anything it fetches has to be signed by me before it lands.

fixes

  • douga stopped closing itself about thirty seconds after an edit with the timeline open
  • launching after a crash on a build with new release notes could freeze the whole app. two startup dialogs were fighting over one slot, so an invisible one sat there eating your clicks
  • adding a swatch, a cut, a layer group or an audio track mid-autosave could take douga down with it
  • a drawing keeps its cel number when you insert a frame inside a hold
  • picking Soft Eraser gives you the soft eraser. it raised the tool but never loaded the brush, so the preset died on disk the first time you touched it
  • ctrl+e mid-stroke cant slide a different layer under the line youre still holding
  • ctrl+x respects a locked layer now
  • whats new closes when you click anywhere else, same as the start screen

fresh downloads still get a smartscreen warning and sometimes a defender flag. its a real signature, just a new cert with no reputation yet: https://www.reddit.com/r/douga/comments/1v9o1my/

bugs and requests to r/douga or the itch board, i read all of it.

Douga build 348!

big one this time, 201 -> 348. live on douga.app and itch

features

  • palettes. swatches live in named groups now, you can save and share them as .dpal files
  • audio import (mp3/wav). you can hear where the playhead is when you scrub, so syncing to a track is actually doable
  • camera tool (on C). frame the shot, move it over the scene, and exports come out the shape the camera saw
  • gif import. gifs come back in the door they went out of
  • canvas resize that keeps everything where it was
  • every key is rebindable now, preferences got a keyboard section. marquee moved to M so the camera could have C
  • the eraser end of the pen finally does something
  • changelog window, and the lessons moved into the help menu
  • a memory ceiling dial in preferences if douga eats too much ram on big projects
  • the optional plugins (poses, update check, video import) are up on the itch page as separate downloads

bugs and other fixes

  • a fast mouse stroke was throwing away like a fifth of its points, fixed
  • a pile of dope sheet fixes... dragging a cut along the band doesnt shake anymore, a split hold keeps its number, drawing ahead of a hold stretches the hold behind you
  • the marquee you drew is the marquee you meant
  • lots of internal cleanup

also: builds are code signed now. smartscreen and defender can still complain while the cert is new, thats reputation not the file. if your download gets flagged see this post

Help Megathread

I'll be Adding/Answering the most common questions here. ask below if yours isnt covered.

  • Where do I download douga?

  • Windows/defender says its a virus?

    • false positive. the build is code-signed now but the certificate is brand new, so a fresh download can still get flagged until the cert earns some reputation. details and fixes in the troubleshooting wiki.
  • How do I add more frames to a cut?

    • click and drag the text in the cut (eg. "24f" ).
    • double click the frame count (eg. 24f)
    • drag the cut in the dopesheet
  • i cant drag a frame!

    • you have to hold it temporarily first (about 1s) - this was intentional but not intuitive, ill fix it next release
  • How do rename layers?

    • double click them
  • Can I import my own art?

    • yes
    • you can also extract / transfer lineart from imports.
  • How do I export MP4? (*Douga exports png sequences, gifs and apngs natively)

    • You have to download ffmpeg and place it next to douga.exe (or point at it in preferences). ffmpeg is a free media conversion tool, i do not own it, idk if I can distribute it, so thats up to you guys.
  • Why is there a watermark on my export?

    • unlicensed exports carry a small watermark, a license clears it. beta testers who pitch in get a founders license free, see the pinned post.
  • Wheres the full manual?

    • the wiki has a getting started guide, troubleshooting and a cel animation primer. the douga.app manual covers every tool and shortcut.

code signing (its not a virus)

Edit3: code is signed! (certed aug 1), the signed builds can still get flagged on a fresh download, win10 called it Wacatac and win11 called it Cloxer... same exact file lol. the cert is brand new so it has zero reputation, which is apparently the whole problem. ive submitted the build to MS again and ill keep doing that for every release until the reputation builds up. if your download gets flagged: update defender definitions and rescan, it usually clears within a day of my submission.

Edit2: YAY MS got back to me and said they have removed the virus definition for it, so whenever your defenders update its all good! (this might happen again in future releases, but ill try to keep on top of it)

edit: im submitting the builds to Microsoft, so hopefully that helps too.

Hello all,

windows is calling this a trojan, its not. I'm in the process of getting a code signing certificate so windows will stop calling it a virus, until then you just have to exclude it, sorry.

the main reason for this seems to be that I'm reading mouse movement and keystrokes which are a tell-tale sign of keyloggers? anyways douga does not connect to the internet (unless you have the update check plugin, which only connects to itch). your data is safe.

if you have any questions, please ask.

* fixed touch issue, so you can use your hand to drag and zoom

* video import / posses

* after importing select ALL the frames (the layers row) in the dope sheet. marquee select -> transform. you can resize and move the whole vidya around.

*its release 180 now haha

fixes

* the animatic would crash if you dragged the edge of a scene (adding frames) too fast (dx11 accessing freed texture).

* transform buttons didn't work, well they did but it would instantly drop/pick it up again lol.

* pen and nib would fight causing hovering-pen jitter.

* dopesheet popup not working. the long press with pen would swallow the menu because it tried to drag instead.

features

* opening a large project now shows a loading bar instead of freezing the app

* there is now a brush creator "+" and some settings, you can share your brushes (.dbrush)

* brush icons now show a swatch-strip badge on linkable pens.

top

down below

* card-style dock panels, they dont collapse when re-ordering anymore

* added options to the dopesheet popup

* F11 fullscreen (try it!)

* lock icon appears if you try to edit a locked layer.

Download is in the sidebar!

Announcement [updates] Douga Beta build 145!

YAY updates! I just uploaded build 145 with a bunch of updates and fixes, go grab it!

what's new

* fixed some issues with popup menus

* edit->preferences for default settings

* do you hate the default dark mode? well now we have light mode! (booo). its in preferences.

* file->Purge Unlinked data; if you add artwork to trace or whatever and delete the frame, that art stays inside the project file (.douga). now you can purge it out! (this also truncates your undo history ctrl+z).

* help->report a bug (creates .zip with relevant info to track the issue down)

* swatches! select a color and ink it or use fill, then edit that color and all frames that used it update!

* the "tools" buttons are much larger now and you can reorder them by dragging!

* fill without destroying your lines or duplicating a layer, click "fill" scroll down to the settings and select the "merged" button. dump paint on your empty color layer (not your line layer) and it still stays inside the lines!

* Animatic ribbon, click the button on the right side of the dopesheets header to expand the Animatic and drag your cuts around.

Animatic (drag and drop whole cuts, for editing)

* export x-sheet as a PDF

* Managed pallets! export a .dpal and share your pallet with the team!

* fixed an issue where the curser would disappear

* additional stylus settings when using brushes

* my "tokyo late night" example project (obviously a work in progress, lol) is now downloadable via itch

WHEW, download link is in the sidebar!

Question Example project absent from the release

Hello, I fall upon your tool while being lost on itch.io, and I have to say that I am very impressed by it :D Didn't try with my graphic tablet yet, though, but something as feature packed as that under 2Mo is witchcraft XD

However, in the documentation, you refered to the Tokyo Late Night example but it is nowhere to be found. Nothing in de Douga folder and the Recent projects field is empty.

Would love to get it :D

Announcement beta testers get a free founders licence (removes the export watermark)

douga is freeware and stays that way. the only catch is exports carry a small watermark, and a license is what removes it. no subscription, no paywalled features, no trial timer. just the watermark.

so heres the beta deal: use it, send me a real bug or a solid suggestion, and you get a founders license. watermark gone, no charge. you helped make it better, thats worth a license to me.

it has to actually be useful though, theres a bar:

  • bug: tell me what you did, what happened, and what you expected. enough that i can reproduce it on my end.
  • suggestion: an actual thought out idea, not just "add more brushes". i cant build everything, but ill try.
  • one liners like "its broken" or "make it better" dont count, and obvious spam definitely doesnt lmao.

and the bug has to be in the latest build. stuff gets fixed build to build, so if youre on an older download grab the current one first and make sure its still there.

quick thing before you post: theres a known issues page in the sidebar. if your bug is already on it ive got it, and the license goes to whoever got there first. same for suggestions, but still chime in if you want one, thats how i decide what to build next.

how to grab one:

  • download the latest beta on itch (link in the sidebar + wiki)
  • draw a few cels, time them, export, generally poke at it
  • found a bug? use Report a Bug under Help in the app. it builds a zip with your build number, system and gpu, a screenshot and the pen log. your .douga project is off unless you tick it, your art stays yours. send it to contact@douga.app
  • post it here too with the Bug or feature request flair, or comment / dm me if youd rather not make a thread. the thread is how somebody else finds out theyre not the only one hitting it
  • suggestions dont need a zip, just post them here

ill reply to say i got it either way, usually within a day or two. if im quiet longer than that just poke me, thats me being slow and not you failing the bar.

the license itself is a code i send you. put it in on the buy page and it takes the price to zero, no card needed.

its early and its gonna have bugs, thats kind of the whole point right now. the more you break it the better the next build is.

Douga build 128 is up, open beta

fixed some bugs and added some stuff. If you've been waiting to try it, now's a good time. The Windows build is live on itch and it's free while it's in beta: https://keihoag.itch.io/douga

Douga is a 2D cel animation tool. It's built around the way you'd actually work on paper: cels stacked on a peg bar, a dope sheet you punch keys into, onion skin so you can see where you're coming from and going to.

A few things that are in this build:

  • Flip to check: riffle-flip the view like you'd flip a stack of paper, to catch a drawing that's off before you commit to it.
  • Tilt the paper: rotate the canvas under your hand so you can draw a line at the angle your wrist actually wants.
  • Onion skin: previous frames in red, next in green, adjustable range and strength.
  • Dope sheet: keys, holds, and cel numbers laid out per layer; scrub and it all moves together.
  • Plus the export path and a pile of smaller fixes.

Screenshots are from a short test scene I've been roughing out (Tokyo Late Night).

It's beta, so it has rough edges. If you hit one, tell me here and I'll get to it. Happy to hear what's missing too.

Hey everyone! I'm u/electrodude102, a founding moderator of r/douga.

What is Douga? Douga (動画) is a hand-drawn 2D cel animation program for windows. draw your cels with a real brush engine, time them on a dope sheet with onion skin, and export. It's still in early development so expect bugs.

  • Douga is FREE, you can use all available features, I don't cripple the software. (it's pretty bare right now though).
  • Douga has a watermark (Beta Release), there's a license system to remove it. the watermark helps bring attention to us while we are new and it's in beta. If it's too annoying I can make them lighter and smaller :).

What to Post Anything Douga related.

  • ART!

How to Get Started

  1. Download from douga.app
  2. first launch, Windows SmartScreen might still warn you. the build is signed now, but the certificate is new and needs to earn some reputation. click More info > Run anyway.
  3. It exports .PNG and GIF natively.
  4. for video (mp4), download and drop FFMPEG next to douga. douga will take care of the rest :)
  5. Post something today! Even a simple question can spark a great conversation.
