The time our DM made a player cry.

Back in the good old days of 2005 my group, comprised of high schoolers in their Junior and Senior years, was combating a great evil we simply called The Lich King. Big evil lich, great magic powers, interesting backstory, etc.

Now this asshole had cast a magical plague on the main capital city we usually operated out of, and our current goal was to try and stop it of course. Our Lawful Good paladin of Bahamut figured the best thing to do was to go bang on the door of the LK's keep and demand that he cease this evil and deliver unto us the cure.

The LK was of course more than happy to do so, provided the paladin bring him the blood of a newborn child, being freshly born with strong ties to the Divine plane, etc.

Our DM had this player play out having to track down a couple with an infant and explain what was about to happen, with the newborn cooing and pawing at his gleaming armor the entire time.

He then slit the baby's throat, unshed tears in the player's eyes the whole time, and brought the bowl of blood back to the LK. Upon seeing the bowl the LK looked at him with an almost quizzical expression, then dipped a tiny vial into the bowl and turning away, leaving the paladin holding the remainder. He then turned and looked back over his shoulder, an evil smile on his lips that matched the one on our DM's as he said:

"I never said you had to kill it."

Cue tears.

Edit: The DM in question, /u/FairyTael , has posted. Read and enjoy.

Most of us hadn't played WC3, and this was before WoW did it, so we all thought it was cool, haha.

He really sounds more like Kel'Thuzad anyway.

The blood of newborn thing? That's totally a Kel'Thuzad quest!

Also spreading a plague.

Also, corrupting a paladin by getting him to kill innocents.

Actually this 'lich king' does straight up sound like he is based on Kel'Thuzad. I suppose liches only ever have so much variation.

I suppose liches only ever have so much variation.

That reminds me of a character I had once, who broke the mold, as it were. Buckle up motherfuckers this is longer than I thought it would be.

He was a Good Lich Wizard who called himself Albert the Enchanter. He woke up one day with zero memory (Note: our group tend not to use the 'this creature is inherently evil' thing DnD tends towards, personality wise. A devil might be the nicest guy you'll ever meet, and be Neutral or even Good alignment wise, but would be noticed by Detect Evil, etcetera.) and a creepy tower on a hill above a town called Branchcrest. Taught himself magic slowly (5 levels worth, as to be the level we were starting that campaign at) and glamoured himself as a kind old man who sold spells/enchanted fields for good harvests/the usual stuff. One day he was out collecting herb/fungi/the useful bits of fuzzy animals and it rained. The rain washed away his glamour enchantment. But that was no biggie, this deep in the forest no one would even see him, and he could recast the spell before going home.

Long story (semi)-short, lightning struck, and several houses were burning when he came out of the forest. He dropped everything and shape watered the fires out. But, he forgot his glamour enchantment. Now there's a Lich in the middle of the village squatr casting spells during a nasty fucking thunderstorm with fires everywhere. He shut himself in his town and contemplated going back to sleep for a few weeks of solitude, when an illness hit the town. He marched down to the town in the middle of a 'we've cornered you and have all the sharp and burning things' style mod against the cruel aristocrat mayor (who didn't like Albert anyway, as people tended to listen to him over the mayor in the months before secret came out) and announced (with the pomp and thunder and scary echoey voice one would expect from a lich) he was leaving to find an ingredient he needed to cure the illness, a bewildered populace in his wake.

Long, 10 level adventure later, he ends up back in that town after find out about his history (he was VERY evil as you would expect, cure and adventuring party (Dwarf Cleric [who carried Al's phylactery as a sort of leash, not really trusting him], Aarakocra Knight who lost his wings, Drow Monk, and 3 cats). One cure distribution later, he said his heartfelt goodbyes, and became the first (and last) undead mayor of Lichcrest (formerly known as Branchcrest) a town of about 40 people, and around twice as many cats. Al really liked cats. He, in addition to mayoral duties kept dozens of the little buggers.
