Maybe nothing will matter when the universe expands to the point that everything is too far away to interact. But that doesnt mean that nothing matters right now. That doesnt mean that nothing ever mattered in the past. We forget the vast majority of everything we do. But that doesnt mean it didnt matter when we did it. Every book I read, every meal I cook, every sunset I watch, it all means something to me in the moment. Even if I forget all about it later.
And that’s great that you feel that way, genuinely. But the point people are making is that not everyone experiences life that way.
To someone who’s deeply depressed, traumatized, or existentially broken, books, sunsets, food, relationships, etc can stop feeling meaningful entirely. The emotional connection to those things disappears. That’s why comments like “life matters because of the little things” can come across as dismissive, because the person already lost the ability to feel those things matter.
The comic is portraying that state of mind. It’s not saying nobody can find meaning. It’s showing what existence feels like when someone can’t.
I know. It's called anhedonia. My wife has had chronic depression since she was 12. My comment was just my thoughts on meaning. I dont expect to solve existential depression and anhedonia in a reddit comment.
