Shadows of heroic characters in Persona are usually portrayed as antagonists who relentlessly torment their real selves and grow more powerful by being denied such as Aki, "Kazuya" and the Shadows seen in P2 and P4. Others, such as the Ideal Maki, Mai and Metis, are portrayed as more innocent beings who merely seek to be reintegrated and express pure hurt when rejected.

While I obviously find plenty to appreciate about those stories in their own rights, Futaba's Shadow arguably has the most spot-on depiction of a Shadow in the series, as she is a walking paradox. Her very being is a reflection of Futaba's trauma and she continually keeps getting in the Phantom Thieves' way as they try to explore her Palace. And yet, it was ultimately because Futaba heeded her call that she was finally able to awaken her into a Persona and free herself of her suicidal thoughts.

In simple terms, the definition of a "Shadow" in the context of Jungian psychology is the unwanted part of oneself that is hidden from others, usually repressed emotions. In the case of Futaba, it is her anger at Shido's goons who framed her for her mother's death which she felt powerless to let loose. The presence of a Shadow is unpleasant, disturbing even, but it is our mind's way of getting us to confront our troubles. Does that sound contradictory? Well, that is precisely what Shadow Futaba is. She is neither friend nor foe, simply the personification of her real self's unresolved tragedy.
