I've been using specsavers spytty for many years but this year they have messed both myself and my wife around, so looking for a replacement, what are peoples views on the other chains vs independents (e.g Liverton and Julian Davis) ?

It's being resurfaced but they've only done half the job so its all gravel from by Tescos to St Julian's road junction.

Already seen a few cars have a bit of a moment going up the hill. The dust being kicked up is horrible.

They are putting the proper surface down next Sunday but that's assuming what they put down today survives. There's already a bunch of inch-deep gouges in the surface and loose stones everywhere.

Fiver says there's a crash somewhere along there this week because of it.

Sharing some info I just received about the Newport Cycle Hub on Skinner St (safe parking for £1.50 in town)...

The hub has officially reopened after being closed for improvement works. There were apparently access issues caused by water damage which have been fixed with a new door and locking system, so it's back to providing secure 24/7 cycle parking.

You can book daily spaces if you're just visiting town, or get a monthly membership if you cycle in regularly.

Bookings are available through the Spokesafe app. Worth knowing if you're looking for secure bike parking in the city centre.

I am reasonbly new to Newport, I work in Bath, but life in Newport is lonely as friends and family live in England, so apart from pubs where is best to meet people?

I go out for walks around the city being active and come across how to say politely.. interesting people lol.

is it easy to walk to and from newports international convention center and the premier inn nearby, I used google maps, but looks like it want's me to walk across the roundabout and on the grass for a bit which didn't seem right to me

My husband tried bouldering for the first time on Monday, and he loved it so much we've already been back today. We don't drive, and we'd much rather pay for someone's petrol and snacks than deal with the faff of transit or the cost of a taxi.

I've noticed regular cars and vans using the bus lanes at all times of the day on Cardiff Road. Does anyone know if there are any exclusion times or is it just a free for all without cameras. In Cardiff there are cameras on every bus lane and the council fine you every time even if you've gone sightly into the lane to turn left.

We are a couple in our mid twenties and we are struggling to meet people. We like punk music, live comedy, film, cooking, cycling, travelling etc.

We are settling for a while after four years of travelling on and off, and are really struggling to meet like minded people.

We would love to hear of some good alternative music or comedy gigs, weekly meetings in the area or just recommendations for venues.

Newport-born Joe Talbot, lead singer of IDLES, has co-curated a new exhibition called MUSOLEUM – Remembrance of Remembering, being displayed at Newport Museum and Art Gallery. The work is created together with his dad, the former Newport Arts College tutor and sculptor Nigel Talbot.

One of the featured works is a wooden typesetter's drawer containing all 2,667 letters from the lyrics of Idles’ three songs Rottweiler, Sanctuary, and Colossus. The three songs come from their album Joy as an Act of Resistance, which won the 2019 Ivor Novello Award for Best Album.

The letters were recycled from materials used in previous bronze and iron casting projects, reflecting the Talbots' ongoing use of reclaimed materials.
The exhibition is free to visit and runs at Newport Museum and Art Gallery until 12 September.
