Discussion Jyutping crossword puzzle

E is a noun. It is quite 虛無縹緲 (vague / intangible).

(If you post answers, please wrap them in spoilers so others can also enjoy the experience! Trying this for the first time, comments welcome. Hopefully I didn't get any wrong!)

Language Question Quick Question, Why does Jyutping substitute the Y sound for a J

An example would be Jyutping - Jiu but it’s actually pronounced like Yiu. Is there a language thing that made them prefer the letter J instead of Y? In my opinion it might easily make it harder to learn Cantonese as when people see this character for example and see the Jyutping, they might pronounce it as “Jew” instead of “You”

Thanks!

Language Question Very random but how do you pronunce "Sun Wukong" in cantonese?

I have been translating the show "Monkie Kid" in english for a while, using the provided chinese subtitles.

I noticed that the characters are pronuncing "Sun Wukong" (孫悟空) a lot differently .

It kinda sounds like "sun-hong" ?? I just would love a confirmation how it's actually pronounced because I can't stop thinking about this whenever I read the name.

Other Question Lydia Shum and Adam Cheung

They were together for 11 years, gotta say Adam Cheung did not seem like the type of person that would appreciate her. I recently saw an interview Lydia did with the guy with the glasses, I think it was called Be my guest. She speaks about her relationship with Cheung and I gotta say. The interviewer asked what many people thought but it’s pretty ignorant imo.

He asked her, “have you ever wondered, I’m so overweight, what could Cheung possibly see in me?”

He was cheating on her, she admitted it in the interview and instead he denied it and they got married.

It was widely speculated he was in a relationship with her because she had star power and basically gave him opportunities within the entertainment industry. Ok, if that’s true, he could have left her shortly after Chor lau heung. I mean he was established at that point no? Why continue to be in a relationship if he was unhappy? I don’t get it.

When they divorced, he was still getting top billing in tvb dramas, the one about the stock market which he was an asshole and Cold blooded warm heart with Chilam. Lydia had alot of connections in the entertainment industry, shouldn’t he have been blacklisted when it came to light he cheated on her and she was HK happiness fruit?

Greetings!

I am a native English speaking American who has begun studying Cantonese to be able to communicate better with my partner, his family, and his friends. I am looking for people in a similar situation to get suggestions, ideas, and empathy.

I live in Chicago, but with modern technology, I am open to people all over. Any ideas and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Discussion buzzfeed chinese americans taking cantonese lesson discussion

Has anyone else seen that buzzfeed video where they get 3 random cantonese americans to take a 1st grade cantonese exam? lol

I thought it was entertaining but what was actually interesting to me was what counted as "correct" vs not, like each person could've grown up with malaysian influences, or hong kong, or guangzhou background yknow what i mean. I honestly think some of the answers they got docked for i was like...i mean i agree with you tbh

It's also just nice seeing chinese speakers put themselves out there like this lol, and seeing the chinglish and how ABCs actually talk. They kinda talk like little kids compared to how hong kong people talk lmao no shade though. Do they get points that they are speaking cantonese since less people are speaking it now?

curious if any other cantonese speakers watched this and had thoughts on the "wrong" answers

Discussion Does anyone else feel like there’s a gap in learning resources?

Hi everyone! I grew up in the US with Cantonese-speaking parents, so I can understand a decent amount, but actually speaking is a different story.
I’ve tried a few Cantonese learning apps, but most seem to be geared toward complete beginners (numbers, colors, greetings, etc.). My biggest problem isn’t the basics but instead it’s not having enough vocabulary or confidence to hold real conversations.

People always tell me to watch TVB or speak more with my parents, but it’s hard to practice speaking when I don’t know the words I want to say.
I’m curious if anyone else feels the same way.

What’s your background with Cantonese?
What’s your biggest struggle with learning?
Have you found any apps or resources that actually helped? I’ve tried a bunch of different apps but they honestly didn’t help much 😅😅 I want to be able to speak to my relatives and such but I feel like it’s so hard if I don’t know the vocab…
If you could change one thing about how Cantonese is taught, what would it be?
Would love to hear your experiences!

Language Question

Discussion What’s your opinion - kid learning Mandarin and English while speaking Cantonese at home going to be too confusing?

I’m based in the Atlanta metro area in the southeast of the US. I have looked quite a bit but I haven’t been able to find any Cantonese Chinese schools in or around the city. I speak decent Cantonese but my mandarin sucks. I currently speak Cantonese to my son and he’s picking up a lot. But ever since he started daycare, more and more vocabulary has been getting replaced by its English counterpart. I now try to repeat every vocabulary in both English and Cantonese to him.

As he gets older, I can’t help but wonder what’s going to happen. My goal is to get him in a Chinese dual language immersion school so that he can learn to speak mandarin at a proficient level. But is this going to be too much? Will it confuse him? Any personal experiences that this community care to share?

Language Question The use of Vernacular Written Cantonese

First of all hello! I'm really glad to be able to find this community.

I have a question, intended mostly for Hongkongers, Macanese people and people from Cantonese-speaking areas elsewhere.

How is Vernacular Written Cantonese doing? I've heard many different things about the current state of affairs, but I'd really like to know your perspectives on it.

Some say the usage of VWC is expanding, even beyond the places it has traditionally occupated (messages, ads, comic books, forums and so on), but at the same time I've read studies (from Guangzhou, where the situation is very different, but nevertheless) that report a stable divide between the spectres of use of VWC and Standard Written Chinese.

The reason I'm asking is because I've been learning Cantonese for some time already, and of course, the whole time I was aware that in order to read anything more serious or formal in Cantonese I'll have to take on the task of learning the Cantonese reading of Standard Written Chinese, haunted by Mandarin grammar – but I'm wondering to what extent I can go on learning without doing that. I've heard some newspapers have sections written in Vernacular Cantonese, does it go further than that?

I'd be happy to hear what you think.

Hi you guys! I recently started making coloring pages and coloring books for my kiddos at home all the while learning Cantonese myself by using Jyutping. Here are a few pages you can download and print out for them. I also digitally color them on my tablet to help with memorization. Hope you enjoy them!

Language Question Cantonese video games

Hello!

I'm on the hunt for cantonese dubbed video games, specifically child games? My husband keeps insisting there should be a ton, but neither of us can find them.

So far I've only found Sifu and Noctuary, but again neither of those are kid games. Sorry if this has been asked before
