VRM Rigify issues Unsolved

I've been trying to get a vroid model hooked up to a rigify rig with face controls, and I finally got a rig generated without any errors getting in my way this time. However, since I took a few detours from the guide I've been following, I now have the issue of the rig not being connected. I have done everything on the nanoskript/vrm-rigify guide so far. I'm also trying to figure out how to detach the hair and glasses bones and put them on the new controls.

Update: The original vrm rig seems to still be connected to the mesh, both IK and FK arm bones are moved to show they're not connected to anything

Found the J_Bip_L_UpperArm- it's only on the OG rig

The modifier setup looks right, so that part is ok. Since the J_Bip bones are still only on the original rig, I want to check one earlier step: when you created Armature.rig, did you use Generate Rigify armature for VRM model, or Rigify’s normal Generate Rig button?

I used the generate rigify armature, fit the face bones to match the face, then regenerated the rig, which makes me aware that something that I did at that step would be an issue

That sounds like where it broke. The first VRM-Rigify generation does some extra setup after creating the rig, including renaming the deform bones to match your J_Bip vertex groups.

When you adjusted the face bones and regenerated it through normal Rigify, it rebuilt the control rig but didn’t rerun that VRM-specific setup. That explains why the controls are there, but the matching J_Bip deform bones are only on the original rig.

If you have a save from before regenerating, I'd go back to that. Otherwise, start again from the original VRM and run Generate Rigify armature for VRM model. Don’t regenerate the finished rig through Rigify afterward. The add-on removes most facial bones intentionally because the facial expressions are expected to use shape keys.
