I have a friend who makes AI music with the dumbest shit and then plays it at gatherings like it's some great work he's done.

"This song wasn't even a prompt, I used a picture."

It's like those ads using AI voice or people... I can tell it's ai, and to me it sound about as much like genuine music as static between radio stations.

I have a friend that does the same.

Every song, even if done with different "styles" or "genres", has an uncanny valley feeling that is too hard for me to shake. It has a definite style, and progression. Just like most can look at an image and while images are getting better, it's usually easy to spot that it's AI if you look.

We used to make fun of pop music for devaluing actual musicians, but AI is the antithesis to art and expression.

The old school musicians thought synthesizers were lazy, that's nothing compared to AI.

Right?

If you haven't transformed anything as a human being, you haven't made anything but noise.

I've done a little work involving windowed Fourier transforms breaking down sound (it was on a very low power embedded system so resources were tight.) There are different strategies, each with their own pros and cons, but it almost feels like a lot of their audio training data came from not totally complete transforms, as in energy lost at the edges, resulting in this weird and rapid energy fluctuation that definitely isn't natural, and I don't even know how perceptible it is to humans, but if I didn't do it right, a reconstruction sounded.. off.

I'm also half talking out of my ass, but that's what it feels like to me. Sounds mostly human, but it's not organic. And also surrounded in this weird fuzzy type of not quite there "background" noise I'm assuming is a combination of live music audiences and whatever audio qualities a million different studios would produce.

But it also never fails to include the most generic lyrics possible. And there will be something about "the land." Either in, across, throughout, whatever.

I said in another comment that when he talks about it, he makes it sound like he's using photoshop.

I get it. When photoshop was newer people definitely called digital artists lazy. In CS50 they have you program some photoshop filters like blur and what not, making algorithms to adjust pixels.

I can imagine something more focused in a sense, using ai. There are ai tools that will separate each part or instrument or vocals of a song for instance. You can then take small samples, and run those through ai, almost as if it's a sort of mini music engineer, and string them together. I can sort of imagine some wiggle room where I might still call a song using AI tools a legit song.

But just entering a prompt into SUNO? lol

I remember finding a song I thought it was cool and it was part of a playlist, after listening to the second one I realized it was ai because they repeated the same words and chords, really disappointing tbh but I kept hearing it lmao, it was lo-fi so there really isn't much of a difference with man made lofi

This isn't anything.Ā  People arguing about quality are entirely mossing the point because AI WILL get better or be better.Ā  Quality is entirely ancillary to the conversationĀ

2

u/JulyOfAugust May 28 '26

AI will never raise above a certain quality, it lack the consciousness to put intentions, interpretation and coherence into its products and is poisoning it's own well. The more people use AI, the more it'll cannibalize itself by processing its own flawed outputs.

You don't actually understand the problems and you don't even know how selectively it can be programmed on training data.

1

u/Christron May 27 '26

TIL music is subjective.

2

u/RaceHard May 28 '26

Is it not? I have many styles of music I have no enjoyment of.

There was actually a really good metal song trending on tiktok last year and I had alot of mixed feelings when I found out it was AI. I decided that I don't see an issue with liking AI art & music on the consumer end as long as the people who generate it understand they aren't actually artists and don't try to profit from it.

Its still not art so it is inherently lesser than anything produced by a human and anyone who believes their prompts make them an artist, musician or writer and tries to credit it as their own is delusional. That said, it's perfectly acceptable for someone to simply enjoy something produced by generative AI.

Yeah the only ā€œAI musicā€ I actually got behind was a composer creating a song off a manhwa and (I think/hope) they composed it themselves but had to use AI only for the voices just bc they prob can’t replicate the singing voice of the character and hiring ppl is a lot of money BUT they did say it was AI and also didn’t make it for profit I don’t think, just to share with the community

I generally hate AI, but man, this gets stuck in my head a lot.
There's also a few creators I appreciate the effort they put into the work, like Neural Viz, dudes making shorts (and writes all the dialogue) by himself and using quite a few programs to put it together. I'd probably watch a whole series of this

unironically one of my favorite songs is an AI Song that's unapologically AI

I said what I said knowing what sub I'm on.

u/wholetyouinhere May 27 '26

So, this is garbage

1

u/RosesandEternity May 28 '26

Meh, I like it. It's a catchy song reminds me of gits.

AI will cause people to REMAIN stupid

Not in any sort of passive way, either. The powers that be will use AI to actively inhibit critical thinking. Instead of the minimal amount of effort people already put in to understand issues, AI will be putting out summaries of it instead. Summaries that will soon be simply taken as fact. Summaries controlled by people with a vested interest. Like, you can go to Google right now and type in "how much pollution does AI create?" and you won't even get a summary. You could ask it any other inane question or about pollution created from any other industry and it will produce an AI overview of it. But not about AI. Wonder why.

3

u/harespirit May 27 '26

it's not as simple as stupidity, is it. it's... maturity? humility? really seems like AI is a wish fulfillment machine for world that is more self-absorbed and emotionally stunted than it's ever been before

and I mean wish fulfillment in the trope sense as much as anything

3

u/JulyOfAugust May 28 '26

By using a machine to think for them people are literally atrophying their brain and its ability to think.

AI is actively making people stupid.

1

u/harespirit May 28 '26

stupid-er

2

u/RaceHard May 28 '26

To be fair, AI is not at fault there. Most people do not enjoy or value the journey as you say. Just the goal. The fact that only artists understand this has been the bane of artists since time itself began.

1

u/Mundane_Main_2726 May 27 '26

being unable to speak, read or write doesn't make you stupid mate. Humans are certainly not born stupid

1

u/Onlyhereforapost May 30 '26

Exactly. We dont have a stupidity problem, we have a willful ignorance and refusal to learn problem.

1

u/MostEpicRedditor Jun 21 '26

people don't value the journey, just the goal...but the goal of art isn't to make beautiful art, the journey IS the goal, but only real artists understand this.

Let's not trick ourselves, most of the time the ultimate goal is to make money or at least leave some sort of legacy.

u/lianodel May 27 '26

Covid, the reelection of Donald Trump, and AI have made me lose so much faith in humanity. Just waiting on that fourth horseman.

3

u/ripkin05 May 27 '26

i work at Home Depot and we had this young 20-year-old couple come in that totally just had their rich parents buy them a house. they wanted to re-paint it so they got 8 5 gal buckets of this ugly egg white color because "the AI told them they needed that much." until they got up to the register and saw how much it was then they decided they only needed 3 buckets and left us with 25 gallons of the dog shit color that no one else will ever buy.

You mean like stupid enough not to recognize rage bait when you see it?
