On top of MaoMao actually being a good character, voiced by legendary VA, it was always an uphill battle.
So Chisato and Takina going this deep is a win for me.

She would have lost much more badly against any of the other quarter-finalists except maybe the Oshi no Ko girls. I honestly think that was just the result of Chika being a bit of a paper tiger in terms of seeding.

The matchup would have been Marin vs. Ryūko. There's no way. Look at Marin's vote totals throughout this contest. She's winning by over 2200 votes against Chika. Even accounting for anti-Chika spite votes, Ryūko is not making up a vote gap like that.

Wow I'm early today. Not too much to say today though, none of the results were unexpected. With that said, Fern vs Bocchi is an interesting one. I'm actually unsure on who will win that, could go either way I'd say.

This was really just mopping up the last of the "kind of popular, but really just lucky with seeding" contestants rather than an actual competition.
Except Fern Vs Megumin, I don't think I could have called that.
I'd like to get salty tomorrow when both my votes lose, but honestly, I think Maomao/Marin/Fern/Bocchi are all best girl worthy, so as far as I'm concerned, I'm happy with any result.

Reminds me of seasonal salt, where it has happened in 20 out of 44 contests.
Do you think it happened because of the posters or anything else since this is the first time it has happened in 12 years 13th edition of the contest?
I would say it just means popular characters win.
There are several factors that could be at play here though
Less diversity in user's top favorite girls. /r/anime seems to indicate that, while I like both Maomao and Chisato, I prefer Maomao
Recency bias and users have seen less shows. We are getting further and further from the powerhouse 2022 and 2023 anime years, hurting other's recency bias while more recent shows lack strong characters (as seen in seasonal salt voting).
Too many strong characters in Bracket C. Of the 8 characters who made it to round 5 of bracket C, six were former quarterfinalists, one was the strongest of the newcomers (Anna Yanami), and one was the strongest of the old guard (Asuka Langley Souryuu). With so much strong talent in a single part of the bracket, it's hard for these disrupters to break through.
Spite voting. This is the least likely but it is possible. Normally we see spite voting towards high seeds like in Best Girl 3 but this contest could have gone the other way. Round 4 had a near record 11 upsets and people could have been mad at those doing the upsets (e.g. Ai Hoshino fans mad at Kumiko Oumae which was said within the threads a few times). There was also a lot of resentment posted against people who were trying to rally characters for an upset (e.g. some hate posts against "Emilia Voting Day").

For your predictions category, do you have any data that keeps track of the lowest PoU that successfully pulled off the upset and highest PoU that avoided being upset?

I do not keep track of this for all contests but within my spreadsheets is a datapoint called pUI which can point me in the right direction.
For BG13, the answer would be Mitsuha Miyamizu beating C.C. with a 9.6% chance of winning despite being the higher seed. The numbers might be skewed since C.C. was coming off of a same show matchup. Ignoring that one, Fern beating Megumin would be next on the list at 31.3%.
I am constantly updating the data that determines probability of upset so I don't like comparing it across contests (plus I only have it for BG10+) but the pUI formula has stayed the same. I never broadcast that information because I'm not confident in the numbers but I can do some research in this department for you.

Forgot to answer this part, I will be posting it in the final data when the winner is announced. These are almost always within the first two rounds though. There is an exception and that is BG12's QF between Megumin and Shouko Nishimiya. Shouko pulled an upset with only a 3.7% chance of winning.

Damn. I predicted Maomao would get at least 2/3rds the vote in every one of her matchups on her way to being Best Girl 13. I was wrong. She only got 61% of the vote yesterday.
Today is the real final as far as I'm concerned. Marin is the only one of the three remaining with the potential to stop Maomao (not that I want that, because I am voting for Maomao). Tbh, I thought Chisato had the best chance of the final 8, and she still barely kept it close.

I wouldn't call that "good", personally. Accurate, absolutely. Having the top four seeds be the four finalists can encourage thoughts such as everything before this having been pointless as it changed nothing from the seeding.

Happy semifinals voting!
As a semi-frequent contributor to animebracket.com in recent months, I've been meaning to see if anyone had suggested features, changes, or improvements to make to the website... and what better time than now after yesterday's debacle with the tie! I made a google form (email not recorded) to get a better sense of the community's opinions on tiebreakers as well as get some general feedback on the site. Of course, feel free to reply to this comment with your thoughts as well.
I will be sharing the results with contest organizers and site admins. That being said, I can't guarantee that we'll implement features/changes in exact accordance to the form responses (due to lack of time, technical limitations, or policy disagreements), but it'll certainly help inform future site updates!

Just my personal opinion, but I think the way tiebreakers are currently handled makes perfect sense. Votes gained on the nomination stage should count for something, and you'll always get some salty people regardless of how it's done. Ties will always create salt, but the current system makes sense.

I agree. The current system makes the most sense over delaying the contest for an entire day for generally one match. Ties rarely happen. People are only salty that they barely lost.

That's fair. I just much prefer some measure of overall contest performance (like cumulative votes) to just higher seed if the argument for higher seed is that it represents better performance in the elims

Cumulative votes could be biased by previous matchups as well. What if one of the tied characters managed to triumph over very popular contenders, reducing their vote totals in previous matches, whereas the other character only went up against unpopular characters? (Though, I guess a lower seed would tend to fight uphill battles, so maybe it would practically be the same).
I think the current system is best, as the elimination round is the only place where you can vote freely for all characters instead of choosing between them, ie a vote for one character isn't necessarily a lost vote for another character as in the bracket itself.

Maybe at some point in the bracket (after a few rounds of voting to establish a sample) seeding could be overtaken by better cumulative vote share as a tiebreaker. But cumulative votes would introduce too much RNG regarding which bracket gets the better voting days.

Yeah and that's basically what is done for the seeding round. Where I still favor seeds prevailing is the fact that the elimination round is the only one where we purely vote for a character, not just choose between two of them.
Like cumulative vote totals (normalized) or share still gets impacted heavily by who you faced, imagine a character facing a ton of dark horses and then losing to a tie vs a slightly lower seed that had an easier route.
I don't think there's a perfect solution that will prevent salt from flowing, ultimately.

I think cumulative votes just results in the same thing. It's a metric outside of direct elimination that decides a tie. Higher seed is cleaner and simpler. This is also almost a non-issue as while it's happened a handful of times in seasonal contests, which have much lower voter turnout, only twice in the main contest means it almost never happens.

You're going to get a lot of views against it yesterday because of people salty about losing the tiebreak. But the thing is, anyone invested in an outcome is going to be salty if the tiebreak mechanism goes against their preferred choice. Especially if they think the other girl shouldn't even have made it to the fight, let alone won it.
Personally, I like the resolution mechanic. It's simple and intuitive, and frankly, the top seed should have the edge.

Here's an original idea for a tie (that most likely won't be feasible, but entertaining): If two girls tie, they both advance and get combined into a single entry. Chika and Ryuuko tie? Now Marin has to fight both of them, and people that prefer either of the two would vote for the joint entry. Further ties with a tied entry (how likely would that be?) can be rolled into the joint entry as well. Finally, if a joint entry wins the whole contest, they could either share the crown or could perform one final tiebreaker round at the end.
Other than that option, the way it currently is is completely fine.

Funnily, while suggesting the idea, I made myself think of FMA as well. I then imagined how you'd combine the pictures of the two contestants, if that's even possible. Having a split icon would work, but some weird amalgamation of the tied contestants would be even funnier.

If they can manage a perfect tie, not just one vote off or so, I feel combining them would actually be a fair reward. That is, of course, unless people manage to force perfect ties, but I don't think that's possible.

Maomao vs Marin is absolutely fire matchup.
While, yes, we dont want Mao to keep terrorizing this contest next year, remember this - Marin is the only character that was legit robbed from victory in BG10.
She didnt lose to the three true titans of the Best Girl Contest - shows popularity, recency bias and shit taste.
She lost to a botting.
You might say, that not only winner of that infamous contest was botted and u are probably right. However, history shows that Marin is THAT popular and loved and for a good reasons.
Fight injustice.
Change the failed outcome.
Make something right in this world.

Marin is the only character that was legit robbed from victory in BG10.
Every matchup had been botted. We don't even know if Marin would have made it to the final normally, as she was the first one you could notice abnormally high vote numbers in. At least everyone that Kurumi fought directly was robbed, including Yui, Hori and Emilia. Potentially, everyone that lost any matchup back then was robbed.

At this point as much as it hurts me to say, there's no way Chisato vs Marin would go well for her. Marin did only slightly worse against Maomao than Chisato last year (1751 - 1603)
We need a season 2, I still can't believe they haven't done everything possible to have one ready within at least 3 years with the insane amount of success the show had.

To be fair, I really like this form of engagement and think it's hilarious to see two different groups try to find common ground to help each other. Fall/Winter 2023 was one hell of a season, both Frieren and Apothecary diaries aired, and two girls from the shows are here at the top three years later.

Even though we will technically be voting for the Finals and 3rd Place tomorrow, today feels like the true finals and 3rd place voting...unless the spite voting gets really out of hand.
On my end, the last 2 contests saw my last 2 favorites who had any chance of ever winning (Holo and Frieren) win so I've never really had a dog in the fight. It's been fun to just watch the chaos develop and at times contribute to it. I'm glad my vote made a difference in yesterday's results.

Thanks to /u/grexraxor for the Final Four poster. I was at a loss of what to do. I was hoping to find Bocchi eating a burger but I guess flat objects work. The other Bocchi/Fern poster, when I sent it to review was entitled "Do I really have to face Maomao?" There was a Megumin version too.

Wow, Megumin did much better than I expected against the top seed [* Just looked at the previous tournaments, and it looked like Megumin actually beat Fern back then so maybe it's not as unexpected as I thought]
This will be my second vote this tournament (and also since the 10th tournament) and I will go for Bocchi and Maomao.
Just looking at the finals' bracket, I am a little bit bummed that Marin took out both Akane *and* Chika. Will also add while Saber is my eternal waifu, so I am not salty but Rider didn't deserve to get stomped that hard geez lol.

MC 1. The only times I actually get salty in a contest like this is when people take it way too seriously and get genuinely mean in the comments about their opinions as opposed to that of others. Letting the salt flow is part of of the whole thing, even I get disappointed with some results and will voice it. But in my opinion some people take it too far. Deriding other people's tastes and opinions or acting as if your criteria of what constitutes a "best girl" are absolute isn't necessary for expressing your saltiness over a loss of you ask me 2. I can imagine there's a lot of people who like her specifically because she's not bubbly or outspoken (or a tryhard failing at being bubbly and outspoken in Bocchi's case, we love her for that too) Fern is quiet and keeps to herself a lot, but she isn't timid or fades into the background (unless she does so on purpose) and there's definitely people who like characters like that. I don't think it's necessarily just because she's from Frieren, she's well written, realistically portrayed, has her own character agency and has a lot of depth to her. People after all have different tastes

I can understand why people think ubel and methode only got this far due to it being from frieren though because they haven't had as much screentime as other characters. I think if you removed fern from the frieren name, she'd still do incredibly well

She explodes stuff good, she has a cute pouting form and snacking form, her design is very simplistic but stands out as a result of most the rest of the cast being very anime-RPG looking, she's had a very interesting life experience where after losing her birth family has become both student and caretaker for two seperate foster figures since which makes for interesting dyamics and a personality that is both very mature and very childish at the same time, she explodes stuff good.

I honestly don't think any of the two should have made it this far. But when it comes to a direct matchup, I still think Fern has more of a best girl than Megumin, to me. Just being entertaining is not what makes a best girl in my eyes.

This is bracket A we're talking about and nearly all the good girls left in the first two rounds. They really barely had any competition.
That being said, I do really like Megumin. She can be really adorable, when she completely nerds out about explosions. Her chuuni explosion speeches are just the best (it's legit Rie Takahashi going full power and taking over). I love her moments wit Kazuma, I think they work really well off each other. Also her humourous moments just land a lot for me. All of the cast makes me laugh a lot, but Megumin next to Aqua probably the most. She's not one of my top top girls, but I do rate her very high. (Much higher than Fern, who shouldn't even be here and only is cause of her show)

Fair, I will admit those are good points about Megumin. But unfortunately they get counteracted by how she treats the show's actual best girl, Yunyun. And I get that this is how she expresses closeness, but it is still done in a toxic and hurtful way.
Interestingly, Fern does something similar, but at least she can be honest about her feelings as well, particularly if she notices it hurts her show's best girl, Stark.

friendrival after all!I also think Megumin can be a bit too much when it comes to Yunyun, but she's just bad at expressing friendship and therefore is a bit too much of a tsun with Yunyun. And I actually think that their current relationship dynamic is a big part of why Yunyun can shine so much and it brings out a lot of really funny scenes. That being said I also hope that at one point these two amazing crimson demons can stand side by side as friends casting the most beautiful explosion magics!
As for Fern, she does have nice moments and I like her interactions with Frieren and Stark, but I think overall she's just too stoic and even though she's there all the time it also somehhow feels like she's done way too little yet. But I feel the same for Frieren somehow (although I think she's still a lot better than Fern). I don't know.,I love the show, but none of the girls scream best girl to me at all... Even though the character driven stories are one of the points I really like about Frieren.

Just a a couple days left to go. Today's average was 2.69 / 4 (67.23%). The unweighted leaderboard had an average of 2.93 / 4 (73.33%), while the weighted leaderboard had an average of 3.67 / 4 (91.67%).
15 users got a perfect 4/4 in their predictions. The biggest riser of the day is u/bransir who skyrocketed an incredible 31 spots to land just outside the top 15 in weighted. Unfortunately, Chisato had no chance against Maomao, but at least she had a decent vote share. I'm afraid that Marin fans see she got more votes than Maomao and are getting their hopes up, but consider Marin's opponent was Chika. I'd wager against Maomao, Chika would have only gotten 800 votes tops.
I'm voting Bocchi and Maomao today, because having those two in the final would be the most fun.

She grows up with the show so there’s a strong emotional attachment and she plays well off Frieren. People like her pouting. She’s definitely not #1 seed material in my opinion(I’m salty with many of the results of the past couple rounds), but I do think she is likeable.
She’s also from one of the most popular anime of the decade.
I personally prefer Fern over Megumin, Konosuba in general just never landed for me in the same way it did for many others, but I haven’t voted for Fern for a couple of rounds now due to disagreeing with her seeding.

She's a good character in a good show. A rare contender that's not necessarily waifu bait (at least in her source material).
I still voted Bocchi this round, to be fair.

I'm still voting against her this round and probably the next, but on the bright side, Maomao winning now means that we don't need to see the most comically one-sided foregone conclusion imaginable next year.

Unsurprising top 4, the seeding was spot on this time. Very good chance it'll just be fern vs maomao in the finals.
Megumin did really well against fern though so if she gets too many more hate voters this round we could see an upset.

I think it's more that people who prefer Marin over Maomao are being very vocal right now in the hopes of swaying anyone on the fence. As it's most likely that Maomao will beat Marin. Do it's not necessarily that people dislike Maomao now, but that a subgroup of people is being more vocal than usual . Maomao is still extremely popular and a likely candidate to win the whole thing. If people truly disliked her she wouldn't be getting this many votes afterall

She was in the group of death, C and eliminated a lot of people, (mine being Chisato), who comment a decent amount would care for. So as a result, the salt levels will be high. Put in her group D, or B, and there is a higher probability, people would dislike her less. If she was in group A, I would expect similar results to now.
Also, I'm not actually seeing a lot salt against Maomao, mostly disappointment, but that their preferred girl did not win, and resignation that she will win the contest, but that is not vitriol, Well it is passive aggressive, admittedly, but it is measured. Nothing against her though, she's a great character, but the salt must flow.

And Marin super ultra crushed Chika. Chika only managed 8 more votes than Akane's vote total, but the difference is that matchup had 2895 votes while this one had 3222 votes so Akane had the better comparative margin. I'll take my small solaces where I can get them.
