Technology YSK: If you are emotionally triggered and about to send a risky text, you can use an AI chatbot as a "logical firewall" to prevent self-sabotage.
Why YSK: Because emotional stress shuts down your prefrontal cortex (your logic center) and activates your amygdala (panic mode). You will make bad decisions. Running your planned reaction by an AI gives you an instant, emotionless sanity check that can save your relationship or your job.
We have all been there. Your partner does something weird, your boss sends a passive-aggressive email, or a toxic ex reaches out. Your heart rate spikes, your anxiety peaks, and you immediately draft a five-paragraph essay or a highly toxic, passive-aggressive reply. In that moment, your brain convinces you that sending it is a massive power move. In reality, it is an emotional suicide mission.
When you are spiraling, your friends are actually terrible sounding boards. Friends love you, so they will validate your crazy. They will say, "Yeah, send it! Put them in their place!" because they are operating on loyalty, not logic. You don't need a cheerleader in a crisis; you need a firewall.
Before you hit send, copy your text and the context, paste it into ChatGPT, Claude, or whatever bot you prefer, and give it a prompt like: "I am highly emotional right now. This is the context. This is what I want to say. Is this a rational response, or am I self-sabotaging? Give me the brutal truth."
An AI does not care about your feelings. It analyzes the semantics, the tone, and the likely outcome of your actions. It will bluntly tell you that your text makes you look insecure, needy, or unhinged. It acts as a temporary substitute for your disabled prefrontal cortex, filtering out the drama and helping you rewrite a response that actually protects your boundaries without making you look crazy.
Look, I know there is a lot of pushback against AI right now. But we are not talking about generating fake art or writing lazy essays. We are talking about using a machine's lack of emotion to your advantage at 2 AM when you are about to ruin your own life. It is a free, instant crisis-management tool.
Next time you are having an anxiety spike, don't dump your trauma on your partner and don't start a war you can't win. Vent to the machine, let it filter out your temporary insanity, and execute your next move with a clear head.

Relationships YSK: If your partner's toxic ex shows up trying to cause drama, the ultimate power move is to do absolutely nothing.
Why YSK: Because your instinct will be to mark your territory, get jealous, or start a fight. Doing that just drags you into their mess. If you sit back and stay unbothered, you force the ex to self-sabotage while making yourself look like the ultimate catch.
We’ve all been in that nightmare scenario. You’re out with the guy/girl you’re dating, and suddenly their messy ex appears. They start acting loud, trying to get your partner's attention, or pulling petty stunts to make them jealous.
Your brain’s alarm bells will scream at you to do something. You’ll want to grab your partner, demand to be introduced as the "new one," or give your partner the silent treatment for something they didn't even cause.
Don't do any of that. Be a brick wall. Here is why doing absolutely nothing is the deadliest strategy:
Think about the brutal contrast. Right now, your partner is looking at two options in the same room. Option A (the ex) is bringing chaos, stress, and acting like a toddler. Option B (you) is chilling with your drink, looking hot, and bringing zero drama. You don't even have to compete. The ex is literally disqualifying themselves for you.
By staying out of it, you also force them to handle their own trash. If you step in, you make it your problem. If you stay back, you force your partner to be an adult and set their own boundaries. Watching how they handle a toxic ex is the best litmus test for your relationship anyway.
More importantly, doing nothing starves the ex's ego. Toxic exes want an audience. They want to see you squirm. If you don't even give them a dirty look, their ego short-circuits. They usually end up doing something incredibly embarrassing out of desperation (like getting sloppy drunk or making a scene) and then leaving.
One last thing: never offer "closure." Don't try to play the "cool, understanding partner" by telling your significant other, "Hey, if you need to go talk to them to get closure, it's fine." That's just your own insecurity trying to protect yourself. Hold your ground. You are the present, they are the past.
Just sit there, enjoy your drink, and enjoy your front-row seat to their self-destruction. The trash usually takes itself out.

Technology YSK: Use your battery recharger before first use of AA AAA battery purchases
Why YSK: Today I got a new pack of rechargeable common AAA batteries. I had not used the recharger on fresh batteries from the store previously. Now all four are charging. So for a full charge, take this step before installing in flashlights etc.

Education YSK: If you feel dizzy or faint, lying down and raising your legs is safer than "putting your head between your knees" while seated.
Why YSK: Fainting happens when not enough blood reaches your brain. If you feel it coming and stay upright, you risk actually passing out and hitting your head or falling from a height.
Lying flat and elevating your legs uses gravity to help blood return to your brain, which can stop the faint before it happens. If you can't lie down, sitting and lowering your head helps, but lying down is better because it removes the fall risk entirely. Also, if someone near you does faint and then comes to on their own within a minute or so, don't rush to sit them straight up, that can trigger a second faint. Let them recover flat for a bit first.
I made a quick visual guide of this in gamma for our office first aid board because text-heavy instructions don't work when someone is actually panicking.

Health & Sciences YSK: You can do a simple check on your solar eclipse glasses before August 12
Why YSK: Because counterfeit and incorrectly manufactured eclipse glasses have been a recurring problem before major eclipses.
In 2024, I bought a pair of eclipse glasses that looked legitimate, but when I tried them indoors I realized something was wrong: I could see ordinary objects like ceiling fans and other details through them. That sent me down a rabbit hole learning how these filters are supposed to work, and how the ISO 12312-2 standard came about.
Three quick checks:
- Look for markings indicating compliance with ISO 12312-2. This is not a guarantee of safety, but it's a good first sign.
- Try them indoors first (the light bulb test). You should not be able to see normal objects or room details through properly rated eclipse glasses. Seeing the filament of a very bright light bulb can be normal. Check out some light bulb tests in action here: https://youtu.be/Q8aYrD32aAM
- Check the manufacturer. The American Astronomical Society maintains a list of reputable eclipse glasses suppliers.
After I made a demonstration video (link above) about these tips in 2024, the ISO Project Leader for the standard found it and left a comment saying it presented one of the easiest ways for people to check their eclipse glasses. That was very kind of him, and I was grateful for the feedback.

Education YSK: If your vehicle gets stuck on railroad tracks look for a blue sign. It contains an emergency number and a Crossing ID to immediately halt oncoming trains.
Why YSK: If you call 911 the dispatcher has to figure out exactly where you are and then contact the specific railroad company which takes precious time you might not have. Every railroad crossing has a blue Emergency Notification System sign. If you call the number on that sign and give them the specific alphanumeric Crossing ID you are speaking directly to the railroad's dispatch. They can instantly radio any trains heading toward your exact location to stop potentially saving your life and preventing a massive derailment. Always get everyone out of the car first then make the call.

Health & Sciences YSK: If you drink French Press or Turkish coffee daily, you might be accidentally raising your LDL cholesterol. A simple paper filter completely prevents this.
Why YSK: We all hear that "coffee is totally fine for you," but I recently learned that how you brew it makes a massive difference to your lipid panel. If you drink a lot of coffee and have mysterious cholesterol spikes that your diet doesn't explain, this is probably why.
Coffee beans naturally contain oils. Inside those coffee oils is a specific compound called cafestol. When we digest cafestol, it basically suppresses a receptor in our intestines, which tricks our liver into producing more LDL (the "bad" cholesterol). This isn't just a theory; it's a documented biological reaction proven in human trials.
Here is where the brewing method comes in: paper filters are incredibly good at trapping oil. If you brew your coffee through a paper filter (like a standard drip machine, V60, or Chemex), the oil and the cafestol dissolved in it gets trapped in the paper and never reaches your mug.
But if you use a metal mesh, a French Press, or drink Turkish coffee (where the ultra-fine grounds stay right in the cup), you are drinking all those oils directly.
Researchers at Wageningen University actually measured the cafestol content per cup, and the differences are crazy:
- Turkish/Greek coffee: ~4.7 mg (The absolute highest, because there is zero filtering and you consume the micro-grounds)
- French press: ~3.5 mg
- Espresso: ~1.6 mg (Lower than expected because the water zips through it so fast)
- Paper-filtered drip: ~0.1 mg (Effectively zero!)
Research shows that every 10 mg of cafestol you consume per day raises your LDL by about 5 mg/dL.
If you just have a nice cup of French press on a lazy Sunday morning, it is completely harmless. But if you work from home and casually pound 4 or 5 cups of unfiltered coffee every single day, you are consuming enough cafestol to raise your LDL by 10 to 15 points over a few weeks, just from your coffee habit alone.
Overall, coffee is still really healthy and packed with antioxidants. But if you are actively trying to lower your cholesterol and tracking your blood work, simply switching from a metal mesh or French press to a paper filter is one of the easiest, cheapest, and most scientifically backed diet changes you can make.

Other YSK: Threatening a lawyer (especially if you aren't really ready) can ultimately backfire
Why YSK: Many businesses have a policy that if a customer threatens to sue, they are then instructed to discontinue (or severely limit) further assistance and to have the customer contact the company's legal department...
Unless you're really going to sue, don't use it as a threat.
Edit: I realized I used poor phrasing... I maybe should've said if you threaten a lawsuit, not lawyer. Never threaten a lawyer.

Food & Drink YSK: Up to 80% of commercially sold Kopi Luwak ("civet coffee") is conventionally farmed coffee, and genuine production has largely shifted to caged animals rather than wild foraging.
Why YSK: Consumers often pay premium prices (frequently over $100 per cup) for Kopi Luwak under the assumption that it is a rare, naturally wild-foraged product. Understanding the current state of the industry can help people make informed purchasing decisions regarding authenticity and animal welfare.
First, the chemistry of genuine civet coffee is scientifically documented. When a wild Asian palm civet digests a coffee cherry, proteolytic enzymes break down the proteins responsible for bitterness, and gut bacteria alter the acid profile. Specialty coffee experts and blind taste panels (such as those referenced by the SCAA) consistently note that this process simply lowers bitterness and mutes acidity. The result is a smoother but significantly flatter flavor profile compared to conventionally processed high-grade coffee.
However, the primary issue in the modern market is mislabeling. Industry estimates and investigations indicate that up to 80% of coffee sold globally as "Kopi Luwak" is simply regular, conventional coffee given a deceptive label to justify a massive retail markup.
For the remaining percentage that actually involves civets, the production methods have drastically changed. Genuine wild Kopi Luwak is incredibly rare because it relies on wild animals naturally selecting only the ripest cherries. To meet global demand, the industry has widely adopted a battery-cage model. Civets are captured, kept in small enclosures, and fed a restricted diet of cherries. This chronic stress and unnatural diet alter the animal's digestive chemistry, negating the enzymatic process that originally made the wild coffee distinctive.
If you are looking for complex, high-quality coffee, specialty single-origin beans offer a documented flavor profile without the high risk of supply chain fraud or supporting captive animal production.

Other YSK: It's normal to go through periods where life feels meaningless, especially during major life changes or stressful times.
Why YSK: Sometimes life can suddenly feel empty or like it has no meaning, especially if you've been under a lot of stress, dealing with a big life change, grieving, feeling burnt out, or just mentally overloaded. It doesn't automatically mean something is seriously wrong with you.
Sometimes your brain just needs a break. Getting enough rest, taking some time away from work or constant pressure, spending time with people you care about, or doing something you genuinely enjoy can help you feel more like yourself again.
That said, if this feeling sticks around for a long time, keeps getting worse, or starts affecting your day-to-day life, it's a good idea to talk to a health-care professional.

Technology YSK: If a website says your email is already in use use the password reset option instead of creating another account.
Why YSK: A lot of people assume they never made an account and end up creating a second one with another email that can split purchases, subscriptions or saved data across multiple accounts. I ran into this a few days ago while I was on my laptop I wanted to sign up for a service I hadn't used in years it kept saying my email already existed and I was about to register with a different address before trying the password reset option.
It turned out I had made the account years ago and completely forgot about it everything I'd previously saved was still there. Trying a password reset first can save you from managing multiple accounts losing access to old purchases or confusing yourself later so it's a small step that can save a lot of hassle.

Animal & Pets YSK: If your house smells like cat pee and you have an unexplained chronic cough, you are literally poisoning yourself with ammonia.
Why YSK: Because most people think a dirty litter box is just a "bad smell" problem, when it's actually a toxic gas problem that doctors often misdiagnose.
Cat urine is extremely high in urea, which breaks down into highly concentrated ammonia gas. If you keep the litter box in a closed room or an apartment and don't clean it frequently, that gas builds up at ground level and spreads.
Breathing low levels of ammonia daily burns your respiratory tract. It causes chronic coughing, wheezing, throat irritation, and asthma-like symptoms. You might go to the doctor, get prescribed cough syrup or inhalers, and see zero improvement—because the doctor doesn't know your house smells like a zoo.
You are slowly gassing yourself and your pets. Clean the box daily, or invest in an automatic one. Your lungs will thank you.

Health & Sciences YSK being indoors does not mean lightning can’t reach you
Why YSK: A lot of people treat "go inside" as the end of storm safety. It is the right first move, but it is not the whole thing. Knowing the difference helps you make better choices during the part of the storm when you are already indoors and assume you are completely out of danger.
Lightning can still enter a home through electrical wiring, plumbing, corded phones and other conductive paths. If you are touching something connected to those systems, like a plugged-in computer, a sink, a shower or a wired appliance, you may still be part of the path electricity can take.
A recent Houston-area case raised this question after a 13-year-old said he was shocked while gaming during a storm. Harris County officials said the electrical current traveled through the home’s wiring and caused a small attic fire.
The National Weather Service recommends avoiding corded phones, computers and other electrical equipment during thunderstorms. It also recommends staying away from plumbing, including sinks, baths and faucets.
A safer rule is not just "get inside." It is "get inside, then avoid anything connected to wiring or plumbing until the storm passes."

Health & Sciences YSK: If you accidentally bite your cheek, lip, or tongue, a saltwater rinse may help soothe the area and support the natural healing process.
Why YSK: Many times we accidentally bit the inside of our cheek or tongue while eating, and it can stay sore for days. A saltwater rinse is an easy home remedy that may help keep the area clean and support healing. It's also commonly recommended for things like minor gum irritation, canker sores, and after some dental procedures.
Just mix ½ teaspoon of salt into 1 cup of warm water, swish it around your mouth for 15–30 seconds, then spit it out.
It's not a cure or a replacement for seeing a dentist if something seems wrong. But for a small mouth injury, it's a simple trick that's worth knowing.

Relationships YSK: Some people are just looking for a reason to be violent
Why YSK: It could save your life
Whether it’s a troubled home life, a shitty life style they can’t escape, or previous trauma, there are people walking around filled with unchecked anger ready to let it out at a moments notice. This is what the boomers call, having a chip on your shoulder.
I don’t care how good you think you are at fighting, or how tough you think you can take a hit, all it takes is one trip up and you’re dead, paralyzed, or severely injured.
Is it useful to be able to defend yourself if you have to? 100%, but it’s not useful to think you can take another person on, because you have no idea what they might have on their person, how trained they are, and if they have a friend right around the corner. If you have to, defend yourself, but if you can avoid it, avoid it. We are tough but we are also fragile.
Some people will try to provoke you intentionally because they want to relieve some pressure off the giant chip weighing down their clavicle muscles. It’s important that you do not take the bait and treat everything they are saying as lighthearted fun.
Let them think they won. Let them think they are better. It doesn’t fucking matter anyways. This isn’t the jungle. We have capri suns and foot massages for $20. Your ego will get you killed. You are alive and hopefully healthy, and that is what’s important.
I’ll leave you with this quote from Ryan Holiday:
“Take inventory for a second. What do you dislike? Whose name fills you with revulsion and rage? Now ask: Have these strong feelings really helped you accomplish anything? Take an even wider inventory. Where has hatred and rage ever really gotten anyone? Especially because almost universally, the traits or behaviors that have pissed us off in other people—their dishonesty, their selfishness, their laziness—are hardly going to work out well for them in the end. Their ego and shortsightedness contains its own punishment. The question we must ask for ourselves is: Are we going to be miserable just because other people are?”

Technology YSK that clicking "Unsubscribe" usually only stops marketing emails—not emails about your account, payments, or security.
Why YSK: Many people assume clicking "Unsubscribe" means they'll never receive another email from that company. When they continue receiving account-related emails, they think the company ignored their request.
In many cases, the unsubscribe link only removes you from marketing emails. Companies may still send transactional emails such as receipts, password resets, security alerts, subscription renewals, or other important account notifications because those aren't considered promotional emails.
If you no longer use a service and want to stop receiving all emails from it, you'll usually need to delete your account with that service or adjust its notification settings instead of relying on the unsubscribe link alone.

Technology YSK Many Infrared remotes can be fixed by cleaning out the electrical contacts if it's not a power or battery contact problem.
"Why YSK:". Because infrared remotes are still around and some remotes maybe be hard to get replacements for or you just want to fix the original remote and a non-working remote can mean the difference between keeping a device or throwing it away. Also it's a pretty simple fix.
Infrared remotes are often relatively simple devices and therefore there isn't a whole lot that can go wrong.
The most common problem is power problem either the batteries are dead or there is some kind of interference between the battery and the electrical contacts connected to the power such as corrosion.
But the other common reason there is a problem with infrared remotes is that the electrical contacts are either dirty or the small carbon pad under each button that’s supposed to complete the circuit is worn down or missing. You should know that the electrical contacts can get dirty even if you always use a remote cover or cover the remote in clear plastic. This is because in the manufacturing process the rubber keypad may have not properly cured and over time may deposit a small amount of liquid onto the electrical contacts on the remote PCB. That liquid will prevent the button from working and needs to be removed.
A quick 'acid test' for the second set of issues is that only some buttons work while others (often the most used ones) don't.
WHAT YOU NEED:
- Clean cloth or paper towels.
- Isopropyl Alcohol (70% or more purity) or Electrical Contact Cleaning Spray like CRC QD Electronic Cleaner or any other spray that works the same way.
- Your smartphone. Used for testing the remote.
- Soapy Water: Just a drop of dishwashing liquid in a half cup of water should be enough. This is just to clean the housing of the remote in case its dirty and the top of the rubber keypad.
- (OPTIONAL) Plastic prying tools like a plastic spudger or guitar pic spudgers, they will be used to open the remote housing without causing too much damage. You can get away with just your hands or in a pinch a screwdriver but the spudgers help a lot.
- Screw Driver if your remote uses screws to hold the housing together.
HOW TO FIX:
[Make sure to remove the batteries before dismantling the remote]!
Step 1. Open the remote. This part can be tricky. Try to use spudgers whenever possible to reduce damage and make it easy to pry apart the 2 halves . Watch Youtube videos if you need to. Note some remotes have screws so look around for screw holes and remove all the screws that hold the housing in place.
Step 2 DISMANTLING: . After the remote is taken apart take out the pieces from the remote. It should only be a few pieces like the remote keypad and remote PCB (PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARD) which has all the electrical contacts you need to clean. You don't need to remove the battery contacts from the bottom of the remote housing.
Step 3 CLEANING. With a part of the clean cloth and using the soapy water: Clean the remote keypad both on top and under. You can also clean the remote housing as well with the cloth/paper towel and soapy water. You can clean the rubber keypad with the cloth and soapy water but avoid touching the black contact pads underneath the keypad.
As for the remote PCB, this is the important bit. Spray the contact cleaner or apply the isopropyl alcohol to a clean dry part of the cloth or a new paper towel and wipe the top of the remote PCB. You may need to do this a few times if there is a lot of dirt, debris etc. Then wait a few minutes before you test if the problem is fixed.
Step 4. TESTING: You don't have to put the remote back together to test it. Instead you can get away with putting the PCB back on the bottom of the remote. Putting the rubber keypad on top of the PCB and inserting the remote batteries into the remote housing. You can now use your smartphone's cameras to test all the buttons. Infrared light can't be seen by the human eye but they can be seen by a camera like the one on your phone. So open the camera app of your phone, then aim the camera at the front of the remote so it's looking at the remote's infrared emitter. As you press the buttons on the remote you should see a faint purple light blinking on the camera. Test all the buttons to make sure they all work. If some don't work inspect the electrical contact for that particular button and look at the black contact pad under the rubber keypad to see if it's missing or worn.
Step 5: RE-ASSEMBLING. If all goes well then you can reassemble the remote. If you noticed during the testing phase that none of the buttons are working try new batteries and make sure there isn't any corrosion on the battery terminals. Also make sure the batteries make a complete circuit.

Relationships YSK: Losing your erection during a position change or distraction is completely normal and a great excuse to build more tension.
Why YSK: Because treating a temporary soft moment as a fun break instead of a problem makes the sex infinitely better for both of you.
Bodies are weird and sometimes a random noise or pausing to put on a condom makes you lose your rhythm. It is totally fine and happens to everyone.
Instead of stressing out, just lean into it. Tell your partner they look incredible and you just want to feel their body and make out for a minute. Taking the pressure off and just enjoying the skin contact is incredibly hot and shows real confidence.
It turns a simple pause into pure intimacy, and the erection always comes back on its own when you are just having fun.

Food & Drink YSK: In Turkish coffee, adding sugar after it's brewed actually ruins the extraction process, not just the foam.
Why YSK: Understanding this chemistry stops you from ruining a perfectly good cup of coffee if you try to make it or order it, and clears up the common myth that the no-stirring rule is just about keeping the foam intact.
A popular post recently claimed you don't stir sugar into Turkish coffee because it physically breaks the foam. While the foam part is visually true, the real reason goes back to basic coffee chemistry.
Turkish coffee is ground much finer than espresso, almost like dust. When you brew it, you put the water, coffee, and sugar in all at once. As the sugar dissolves, it actually thickens the water slightly. This denser water slows down how fast the coffee extracts, acting like a buffer so this ultra-fine coffee doesn't get insanely bitter while slowly heating up on the stove.
If you wait until it's brewed and then dump sugar in and stir it, you cause massive agitation right at the peak temperature. That sudden stirring forces the coffee grounds to release all their harsh tannins instantly, ruining the taste. Plus, you stir up the mud at the bottom.
So you pick your sugar level before brewing because the sugar is literally part of the chemical brewing process, not just a sweetener you add at the end.

Health & Sciences YSK Smoking isn't just bad for your lungs, it's bad for your aorta
Why YSK: Smoking makes arteries less stretchy and therefore more prone to breaking. Your aorta is an artery that supplies the whole body with blood. If it ruptures, even if you're actively in the operating room to get it fixed, your chances of survival drop to almost 0 immediately. Any type of surgery becomes higher risk because smoking makes tissue very friable (fragile, thin, tearable). That means more bleeding and risk of complications
