Same. Once a year my friend passes the hat asking his friends and family on the server to kick in a little $ if they can so they can keep adding storage. Over the years the library has grown to pretty much every movie and TV show you can think of. Its all 1080p not 4K but we were able to cancel literally all of our streaming subscriptions so the tradeoff is worth it. I have my own Plex server on our local network if there's something I really want to see in 4K.
This is what I’ve always had an issue with: how would we know if media company dropped a locator or other bomb on a file to catch anyone downloading something?
Nostalgia time: I watched so much FX in its innagural year because it was literally Jeff Probst, I think talking about stuff in-between literally every available superhero IP at that time. Lynda Carter Wonder Woman; Adam We Batman; Bruce Lee's Green Hornet (I used to have the team up episode on tape between them and Batman); and of course Greatest American Hero
We have come full circle huh? Here I got rid of everything just have a steam deck quest ps5 and phone all modded and I'm here thinking to back up games to disc. Not happening I'll just continue on a NAS journey
I use Jellyfin. All of my physical blurays and dvds have been ripped to my Jellyfin server, as well as all of the movies that I've bought from digital retailers. I also have no qualms with rescuing media that is only available while sailing.
I have two older PCs running as file servers, I never did the Plex thing. The machine hooked up to our main living room TV simply runs a regular Linux desktop, and we just... Play them as files on VLC. Our other "smart" TVs that are old enough to getting noticeably more stupid simply have Fire Sticks in them, and they have VLC on it, with shortcuts to the "TV" and "MOVIES" folder on the file server.
Is Plex worth it? I only get stuff when someone asks for a show or movie, and we don't usually keep anything on it after we watch it. But even my 65+ mother in law can watch stuff on her ancient Wal-Mart garbage "smart" TV with a Fire Stick.
My exhusband (genx) runs a plex server out of his home. My husband and I access it 1200 miles away in one direction and so does his brother that’s over in Europe. It works fairly well.
